Denna avhandling tar sin utgångspunkt i ett ifrågasättande av effektiviteten i EU:s konditionalitetspolitik avseende minoritetsrättig- heter. Baserat på den rationalistiska teoretiska modellen, External Incentives Model of Governance , syftar denna hypotesprövande avhandling till att förklara om tidsavståndet på det potentiella EU medlemskapet påverkar lagstiftningsnivån hos stater som omsluts av EU:s konditionalitetspolitik avseende minoritetsspråksrättigheter. Mätningen av nivån på lagstiftningen avseende minoritetsspråksrättigheter begränsas till att omfatta icke-diskriminering, användning av minoritetsspråk i officiella sammanhang samt minoriteters språkliga rättigheter i utbildningen. Metodologiskt används ett jämförande angreppssätt både avseende tidsramen för studien, som sträcker sig mellan 2003 och 2010, men även avseende urvalet av stater. På basis av det ”mest lika systemet” kategoriseras staterna i tre grupper efter deras olika tidsavstånd från det potentiella EU medlemskapet. Hypotesen som prövas är följande: ju kortare tidsavstånd till det potentiella EU medlemskapet desto större sannolikhet att staternas lagstiftningsnivå inom de tre områden som studeras har utvecklats till en hög nivå. Studien visar att hypotesen endast bekräftas delvis. Resultaten avseende icke-diskriminering visar att sambandet mellan tidsavståndet och nivån på lagstiftningen har ökat markant under den undersökta tidsperioden. Detta samband har endast stärkts mellan kategorin av stater som ligger tidsmässigt längst bort ett potentiellt EU medlemskap och de två kategorier som ligger närmare respektive närmast ett potentiellt EU medlemskap. Resultaten avseende användning av minoritetsspråk i officiella sammanhang och minoriteters språkliga rättigheter i utbildningen visar inget respektive nästan inget samband mellan tidsavståndet och utvecklingen på lagstiftningen mellan 2003 och 2010.     The Differential Impact of War and Trauma on Kosovar Albanian Women Living in Post-War Kosova Hanna Kienzler Department of Anthropology McGill University, Montreal June 2010 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy © 2010 Hanna Kienzler Abstract The war in Kosova had a profound impact on the lives of the civilian population and was a major cause of material destruction, disintegration of social fabrics and ill health. Throughout 1998 and 1999, the number of killings is estimated to be 10,000 with the majority of the victims being Kosovar Albanian killed by Serbian forces. An additional 863,000 civilians sought or were forced into refuge outside Kosova and 590,000 were internally displaced. Moreover, rape and torture, looting, pillaging and extortion were committed. The aim of my dissertation is to rewrite aspects of the recent belligerent history of Kosova with a focus on how history is created and transformed through bodily expressions of distress. The ethnographic study was conducted in two Kosovar villages that were hit especially hard during the war. In both villages, my research was based on participant observation which allowed me to immerse myself in Kosovar culture and the daily activities of the people under study. The dissertation is divided into four interrelated parts.The first part is based on published accounts describing how various external power regimes affected local Kosovar culture, and how the latter was continuously transformed by the local population throughout history. The second part focuses on collective memories and explores how villagers construct their community‟s past in order to give meaning to their everyday lives in a time of political and economic upheaval.

When I was conducting field research in that area, in 1995 and 1996, it had approximately 70 houses and 400 inhabitants. It is the only Macedonian-speaking village in that district. It does not belong to the group of Macedonian villages located on the Albanian shore of the Great Prespa Lake, who form the majority of the Macedonian minority in South-eastern Albania, and its inhabitants are willing to differentiate themselves from those of the Prespa villages.

    Geopolitical Anomalies: Exceptionalities and Regularities of International Politics A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science in the University of Canterbury by Lucas Knotter University of Canterbury 2016 1 Abstract As international law and legally recognised states have been generally taken as the primary structures and actors of international politics, polities without those legal rights and privileges have been subordinated as rather insignificant in international relations. Over the past few years, however, events in Ukraine, as well as in Iraq and Syria, have reminded us of the persistence of such unrecognised polities claiming a semblance of statehood in international politics. This thesis, therefore, contends that the abundance and tenacity of these unrecognised political entities suggests a reconsideration of purely “legal” notions of international political life. It employs the term “geopolitical anomalies” (McConnell 2009a; 2009b; 2010) – political entities without the recognised rights and privileges of legal states, but with state-like structures and manifestations nonetheless – to call for a more serious consideration of these “actual” political exercises in international relations. This concept of geopolitical anomalies is utilised as a signifier of the physical and spatial manifestations of a wide array of political communities that demonstrate the essential irregularity of the international legal and political system. By specifically focusing on the differences between conceptualisations of juridical (de jure) and material (de facto) of sovereignty, this thesis aims to demonstrate how geopolitical anomalies help us gain a clearer understanding of the differences between legal and normative power, material power relationships, and specific manifestations of de facto sovereign power.

    Nata{a Gregori~ Bon: Storytelling as a spatial practice in Dhërmi/Drimades of southern Albania Storytelling as a spatial practice in Dhërmi/ Drimades of southern Albania Nata{a Gregori~ Bon Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper leads the reader to paths and places constructed by storytelling, remembrances, and the biographical contexts of the people of Dhërmi/Drimades in southern Albania. By following the people’s movements and networks of connections between the individual places that construct the spatial relations, this paper explores the ‘cartographic optic’ as recounted in the people’s stories. The underlying question is how different meanings of space and place, created by individual stories, construct the ‘whereness’ of Dhërmi/ Drimades and how that ‘whereness’ constructs different meanings of space and place. The paper argues that through remembering their ancestors’ movements and winding the stories around their paths the local people continuously shift the village’s position and its boundaries and in so doing they reconstruct ‘their’ space where they seek to anchor their sense of belonging. This sense of belonging is informed by the notion of the nation-state as a hegemonic concept on the one hand and a sense of distinct locality on the other. Overall the paper presents the people’s conception of space and themselves in it. KEYWORDS: storytelling, spatialising, mapping, reconstructing ‘whereness’, southern Albania.
