    - 133 APPENDIX A BRIEF - 134 - 135 - 136 - 137 - 138 APPENDIX B CASE STUDIES - 139 CASE STUDIES Seventeen slopeworks were selected as Case Studies. The purpose of the Case Studies was to examine the role of the landscape architect at each stage of the design process and the effectiveness of the landscape treatment both in an engineering sense and visually. The selection of slopes for Case Studies was from the 200 slopes of the overall review (Volume 2) and with the addition of several slopes jointly suggested by the Steering Committee. It was important in the Case Studies selection that the slopeworks were relatively recent to facilitate the tracing of records and individuals involved. To speed up the interview process, interviews were limited to the parties involved in this project and in LPM works. The Case Studies were constrained by time and the information which was obtainable in the available time. Some involved personnel had moved to other works or to other contracts and, in some cases, relevant information had not been archived. List of Case Studies 1. Caine Road, Mid-Levels 2. • Structural Geological Input for a Potential Cavern Project in Hong Kong C
Structural geological input for a potential cavern project in Hong Kong C. D. Jack, S. Parry & J. R. Hart GeoRisk Solutions Limited, Hong Kong ABSTRACT Rock engineering requires an in-depth understanding of structural geology to assist with successful project outcomes. This paper examines how structural geological information can be incorporated effectively into a conceptual engineering geological model with reference to the proposed Sha Tin (Shek Mun) Strategic Cavern Area. It also examines the potential rock engineering implications and engineering geological uncertainties for the proposed Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works Cavern site. 1 INTRODUCTION Rock engineering requires an in-depth understanding of structural geology, as discontinuities govern the behaviour of many rock masses at the scale of most rock engineering projects. Consequently, the development of a conceptual engineering geological model by an experienced engineering geologist should be an early product for any rock engineering project. All too often the structural geological information for such projects is superficially evaluated and interpreted in isolation, without reference to an overall hypothesis or model. Given the variable and complicated nature of structural geological data, the lack of such an interpretative framework can result in misleading or incorrect interpretations. The preferred approach (Baynes et. al. , 2005), is to develop a series of evolving engineering geological models (conceptual, observational and analytical), which explicitly and systematically include structural geological data. This paper demonstrates the use of conceptual engineering geological models in rock engineering, using as a case study the proposed Sha Tin Strategic (Shek Mun) Cavern Area in Hong Kong. The case study demonstrates how structural geological data from desk studies can be quickly, effectively and inexpensively incorporated into a conceptual engineering geological model.

The Historical Heritage of Ho Chung, Pak Kong, and Sha Kok Mei, Sai Kung P.H.Hase S.Y. Consultancy Services Co. Ltd June 2003 1 The Historical Heritage of Ho Chung, Pak Kong, and Sha Kok Mei, Sai Kung The Early History of the Sai Kung Area In the Nanhan (907-971), Sung (972-1279 in the Hong Kong area), and Yuan (1280- 1367) periods, the Hong Kong area fell into the then County of Tung Kuan (東莞). Probably in the Nanhan period, the coastal areas of this County were divided into eight sub-districts, or To (都: see Map 1). The coast-lines of these eight To were controlled by two Imperial Monopolies: seven of them by the Imperial Salt Monopoly, and one by the Imperial Pearl Monopoly. The area of coast controlled by the Imperial Pearl Monopoly comprised approximately the coasts of today's Sai Kung, Sha Tin, Tai Po and North Districts, from Lei Yue Mun Point (鯉魚門) a little east of Kowloon City, to Mui Sha Tsim Point (梅沙尖), just east of Sha Tau Kok. The Imperial Pearl Monopoly had a major pearl-fishing centre and garrison at Tai Po, at least from Nanhan times. The area was, in these years, the second most prolific pearl-fishing ground (after the pearl-fishing area off Hainan) in China, and produced a significant percentage of the pearls used in the production of Court robes and vessels. Protection of the Pearl Monopoly's interests required that casual access to the pearl- fishing areas be heavily restricted. Theft of pearls by the pearl-fishers, their illicit sale to commoners, and their smuggling out of the pearl-fishing area were always serious risks, given the high value and tiny size of the pearls.
