In the first place I would mention Professor R.-A. d’Hulst, who invited me to undertake the subject of Rubens’s 'Hunting Scenes’ for the Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard and also acted as supervisor for the doctoral thesis that I submitted to the University of Ghent on the basis of this text. A four-year grant from the Fonds voor Kollektief Fundamenteel Onderzoek enabled me to complete the work, and I was able to carry out research in the USA thanks to a travel subsidy from the Nationaal Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek. It would not be a truism to say that this work is not a mere individual achieve­ ment but is to some extent the result of a collective effort. As in the other volumes of this series, the foundation was provided by the material collected and analysed by Ludwig Burchard. Bauduin’ (lower left); the second signed ‘F. Bauduin’ (lower centre) oil on canvas, a pair each 51.4 x 63.2 cm (20¼ x 25 in) (2) Set against a dramatic backdrop of undulating mountain scenery and peopled with brightly lit figures, this pair of paintings presents an exquisite example of the Flemish landscape genre. In An Extensive River Landscape with Figures around a Village with a Town in the Distance, a group of figures in the foreground stop to converse on a well-travelled road. Beyond them, two people make their way along the path leading towards a lake, where more figures and two horses are faintly identifiable. Near the lake, the edge of a town can be seen and in the centre of the painting, a building is nestled within the landscape in front of which stand a herd of cows and a farmer. To their right, a river meanders its way through the craggy landscape where further buildings are situated. In An Extensive Mountainous Landscape with Figures before a Building, a horseman passes a man talking to two women, one of whom sits down to rest; nearby a child clad in blue and a loyal dog wait patiently. Beyond them, two figures follow the path as it curves round to a bridge over which a herdsman guides his cattle.

    Sebastian Vrancx (Antwerp 1573 - Antwerp 1647) A Landscape with a Convoy on a Wooded Track under Attack oil on panel 44 x 64 cm (17⅜ x 25¼ in) Sebastian Vrancx was one of the first artists in the Netherlands to attempt battle scenes and A Landscape with Convoy on a Wooded Track under Attack offers an excellent example of his work. A wagon is under attack from bandits who have been hiding in the undergrowth on the right-hand side of the painting. The wagon has stopped as its driver flees for the safety of the bushes, whilst its occupants are left stranded inside. The wagon is guarded by three soldiers on horseback but in their startled state none have managed to engage their attackers. A line of bandits emerge from their hiding place and circle behind and around their victims, thus adding further to the confusion. Two figures remain in the bushes to provide covering fire and above them, perched in a tree, is one of their companions who has been keeping watch for the convoy and now helps to direct the attack. The scene is set in a softly coloured and brightly-lit landscape, which contrasts with the darker theme of the painting. Attack of Robbers, another scene of conflict, in the Hermitage, also possesses the decorative qualities and Vrancx’s typically poised figures, just as in A Landscape with a Convoy on a Wooded Track under Attack. A clear narrative, with travellers on horses attempting to ward off robbers, creates a personal and absorbing image. It once more reveals Vrancx’s delight in detailing his paintings with the dynamic qualities that make his compositions appealing on both an aesthetic and historical level.

Placées sous l'autorité du secrétariat d'Etat à la marine puis sous celle d'un bureau des colonies, les possessions françaises sont au cœur d'un commerce florissant régi par le système de l'Exclusif, aucune colonie n'étant autorisée à faire commerce avec l'étranger. Selon le mercantilisme de Colbert et comme le mentionne l'Encyclopédie : Les colonies n'ont été fondées que pour l'utilité de la métropole. Cette nouvelle prospérité permet le développement considérable de ports comme Nantes, Bordeaux ou Lorient. Au cœur de cette économie coloniale, l'esclavage, régi par le Code noir de 1685, est alimenté par le commerce triangulaire. Les esclaves, tous originaires d'Afrique, sont alors considérés comme une marchandise. Ils permettent également l’importation d’animaux rares comme le lion. ARTISTE Initié par son père graveur, Pieter Boel entre en apprentissage probablement chez les peintres de natures mortes et d’animaux d’Anvers Frans Snyders puis Ian Fyt. Entre 1647 et 1649, il se perfectionne en Italie où il rencontre un vif succès notamment à Rome et Gênes, où il s’inspire des compositions animalières de Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione. De retour à Anvers vers 1650, il est reçut franc maître de la guilde et il s’y marie.

    The Spell of Belgium By Isabel Anderson THE SPELL OF BELGIUM CHAPTER I THE NEW POST THE winter which I spent in Belgium proved a unique niche in my experience, for it showed me the daily life and characteristics of a people of an old civilization as I could never have known them from casual meetings in the course of ordinary travel. My husband first heard of his nomination as Minister to Belgium over the telephone. We were at Beverly, which was the summer capital that year, when he was told that his name was on the list sent from Washington. Although he had been talked of for the position, still in a way his appointment came as a surprise, and a very pleasant one, too, for we had been assured that “Little Paris” was an attractive post, and that Belgium was especially interesting to diplomats on account of its being the cockpit of Europe. After receiving this first notification, L. called at the “Summer White House” in Beverly, and later went to Washington for instructions. It was not long before we were on our way to the new post. Through a cousin of my husband’s who had married a Belgian, the Comte de Buisseret, we were able to secure a very nice house in Brussels, the Palais d’Assche. As it was being done over by the owners, I remained in Paris during the autumn, waiting until the work should be finished. My husband, of course, went directly to Brussels, and through his letters I was able to gain some idea of what our life there was to be.
