This project was promoted and co-funded by the Lombardy Regional government, which has been recently paying particular attention to mountain tourism. Our proposals are targeted at hikers with no special mountaineering skills. All excursions will be conducted by a professional guide. Along the treks participants will have the opportunity to enjoy the warmth of the hospitality of alpine refuges managed by members of our association, and taste the best traditional foods the Rhaetian Alps and Lombardy Pre-Alps have to offer. Assorifugi Lombardia is also readying all kinds of proposals for you: learning tours and short theme stays, visits and classes to suit all needs and tastes. If you wish to keep up with our new proposals and the latest news, please visit our website: www.rifugi.lombardia.it and sign up to be on our mailing list. We are looking forward to seeing you in our alpine refuges! If, in the meantime, you wish to receive additional information, please send us a message at [email protected]. Inhabited for over ten thousand years, as evidenced by the largest concentration of rock carvings in Europe, the valley is rich in artwork from through the ages, commissioned by both the church and private individuals. There are numerous churches of all periods starting from the Romanesque period (XII century): over two hundred noteworthy monuments have been catalogued. The sides of the Camonica Valley are studded with bastions and castles, while the old hamlets have many stately residences, evidence of a time when this valley was a rich and thriving area thanks to its production activity and trade with for the Venetian Republic. Drop-forges, mills, melting furnaces, waterworks, and mines still bear witness to the hard work of the Camonica Valley inhabitants throughout history, hard work that still goes on today in the many artisan businesses that have sprung up all along the valley bottom. As soon as you leave the banks of the Oglio River and hike up the forested valley sides, or venture into the side valleys rising up to the perennial snow of the glaciers, nature becomes the undisputed king of this fortunate valley in the heart of the Alps. There are plentiful flora and fauna and myriad streams, which, aided by a vast system of lakes and basins, provide the water power needed to run the many hydroelectric power plants built in the area. - 5 - • Adamello Park Adamello Park lies in the Rhaetian Alps, a section of the Central Alps, and stretches over the entire Lombard side of the Adamello range in the northeastern part of the province of Brescia. The park extends from Tonale Pass to Crocedomini Pass, over an area of 510 km2. On the east side, it is bounded by the border between Lombardy and Trentino, while on the west the boundary runs just above the left bank of the river Oglio, the fifth longest river in Italy. Adamello Park is also very important due to its unique position. It bridges two neighboring parks: Trentino Adamello-Brentan Park on its eastern boundary and Stelvio Park to the north. The latter, in turn, borders on still another important park, the Swiss Engadina National Park. Thus, at the very heart of Europe, a 2,500-km2 protected area was created, the largest in the Alps and one of the most fascinating and enchanting spaces in the entire Alpine range. Adamello Park occupies the southern section of this greater park area. http://www.parcoadamello.it - 6 - • Adamello Trail 1 One the most beautiful in the Alps, this seven-day itinerary at elevations above 2,000 m, crosses the entire Adamello Park, in a south to north direction, following 80-year-old communication pathways along the World War I battle lines. During the trek you will travel from the limestone/dolomite areas of the southern part of the park, to the areas where tonalite, a geologically more recent granitic formation, is the predominant rock. We suggest planning this excursion for the months of June and July, when the high-altitude blooming season is at its peak.

Abstract: The fictive ornamental curtains are depicted in many medieval churches in Lombardia. In Valtellina (Province of Sondrio) there are four drapes with interesting iconographic and typological elements, similar to curtains preserved in the Province of Varese and Como (XI- XII). In Postalesio, at Saint Colombano’s church, a velum with a cycle of the Months decorates the base of the apse, in relation with calendars of: Gornate Superiore, Jerago, Gattedo, Piona, Borgomanero, Pallanza. A drape depicted with stars is on the apse of Saint Perpetua in Tirano and Saint Alessandro in Lovero; a drape with lions adorned a destroyed church of Saint Martino of Serravalle in Sant’Antonio Morignone.

  • The Route of Terraces in Valtellina: Community Involvement and Turism for the Enhancement of Cultural Landscape
TERRACED LANDSCAPES CHOOSING THE FUTURE 1 III World Meeting on Terraced Landscapes THE ROUTE OF TERRACES IN VALTELLINA: COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AND TURISM FOR THE ENHANCEMENT OF CULTURAL LANDSCAPE Dario Foppoli* Fulvio di Capita** Fondazione di Sviluppo Locale Amministrazione Provinciale di Sondrio Via Piazzi, 23 Corso XXV Aprile, 22 23100 Sondrio - ITALY 23100 Sondrio- ITALY [email protected] [email protected] * Local Development Foundation - Sondrio - ** Provincia di Sondrio, servizio ITALY Produzioni vegetali, assistenza tecnica, infrastrutture e foreste - Sondrio - ITALY Abstract Following the experience acquired in the Distretto Culturale della Valtellina (Valtellina Cultural District) project, the territory was stimulated to further strengthen the relationship between culture, heritage/cultural landscape and the economy. The process emphasized the need to implement positive synergies across these fields and to experiment models of collaboration, which due to the distinctive features of the Valtellina valley hinge on an appropriate development of cultural tourism. The cultural landscape of the Valtellina terraced area was identified as the first asset from which to begin to develop a quality tourism policy. The idea is to create a walking and cycling route called ‘Via dei Terrazzamenti’ (The Route of Terraces), linking existing routes and paths (thus minimizing environmental impact) and allowing tourists to visit the terraced landscape. This has resulted in the local community acquiring a greater awareness of its territory and offering tourists an interesting cognitive experience. Key words: cultural landscape, quality tourism, community involvement, pedestrian route, cycle route 1 Introduction In Valtellina, as in all other alpine areas, the landscape is characterized by centuries-old signs traced by the man and by the close relationship that has necessarily developed between the territory and human activities: there are signs of this both in high-mountain and valley-bottom areas.

This study reports about prehistoric fire incidents and their impact on the flora and vegetation near the village of Ardez in the Lower Engadine Valley (Switzerland) since the Late Neolithic Period. Pollen, charcoal particles and non-pollen palynomorphs preserved in the Saglias and Cutüra peat bog stratigraphies were quantified and the results compared with the regional archaeological evidence. Anthropogenic deforestation using fire started around 4850 cal. BP at Saglias and aimed at establishing first cultivated crop fields (e.g. cereals) and small pastoral areas as implied by the positive correlation coefficients between charcoal particles and cultural and pastoral pollen indicators, as well as spores of coprophilous fungi. Pressure on the natural environment by humans and livestock continued until 3650 cal. BP and was followed by reforestation processes until 3400 cal. BP because of climatic deterioration. Thereafter, a new, continuous cultivation/pastoral phase was recorded for the Middle to Late Bronze Age (3400–2800 cal.

Zufrieden. Kurvensatt. Positiv geladen. Wir können davon nicht genug bekommen. Und des- halb: „Lass uns doch mal ...“ — “Let’s drive over the Dolomites and down to Venice!” For all “Soulful Drivers”, this is an emotional key phrase which im- mediately sets off fireworks of pure joy in every synapse. Images are created in the mind that blend almost forbidden wilderness with sensual beauty. The north of Italy lives from intoxicating emotions and sharp contrasts that are unparal- leled in the Alps. One moment you find yourself in an intense duel with the switchbacks of the Stelvio Pass – and the next minute you’re cruising over the wide, simmering plains down to the Mediterranean. Happy. Among them four are new to Italy: Atheta alpigrada, A. reissi, Schistoglossa pseudogemina and Cypha carinthiaca. They are discussed with further 19 species considered relevant for rarity and geographic distribution. The biogeographic analysis shows a prevalence of widely distributed species. Among those with restricted distribution some are characteristic for the Rhaetian Alps, others point out the importance of the Adige river valley as a biogeographic barrier. Some southern Keywords: Staphylinidae, species occur in thermophilous forests and in wetlands. The presence of rare species faunistics, new records, Alps, in protected areas, mostly in “Sites of Community Importance”, is evidenced. Trentino, Italy Introduction The aim of this work is the publication of a large amount of data on rove beetles (Sta- phylinidae), the largest family of Coleoptera (more than 60,000 species described up to date), collected by the author in Val di Non since the sixties of the past century. Year after year, I tried to sample every kind of macro- and microhabitat occurring in that area, with the aim of representing the diversity in this particular valley, which connects the Rhaetian and Dolomitic areas from west to east, and the metamorphic Central Alps and the carbonatic Prealps from north to south.

  • 2021 Giro Virtuale Ride Report 210602
Giro d’Italia Virtuale 2021 had not given much thought to a 2021 Giro d’Italia Virtuale until I was contacted out of the blue via LinkedIn the week before the real Giro I started. “Are you the Pike Talbert who created the Fulgaz Giro d'Italia Virtuale last year at https://fulgaz.com/my-giro-ditalia-virtuale-pike- talbert?” his note began. “If so, I'm wondering if you were going to curate a version 2.0 for the 2021 Giro?” That was all the inspiration I needed! A week later: Tahdah! An initial draft was complete: 21 stages utilising 20 FulGaz rides, 14 of which were new this year—either recently released by FulGaz, or recently discovered by moi. Several iterations later the final version was complete. The Table below provides a comparative Summary. A couple of background comments are worth highlighting: • My Giro last year was mostly about climbing as many of the famous and iconic mountain passes as possible. I have discovered the hard way that this is actually boring (not to mention painful). It turns out that flatter, rolling stages usually contain better scenery—a “smell the roses” approach that favours vistas and seeing more of Italy’s natural beauty over elevation gain and degree of difficulty. Thus, I have inserted more flatter and rolling stages. • Most of the rides I have eliminated in favour of the new ones are longer climbs (i.e., greater than 90 minutes based on videographer time and 3 of the 4 Stelvio-related ascents). It is for this reason that the total time is nearly an hour less than last year.
