We have had our first O/MODERNT-inspired con - certs at the Muziekgebouw aan’t IJ in Amsterdam and have embarked on exciting collaborations with the Bath, St Magnus and SONORO festivals. The O/MODERNT Kammarorkester will also have its inaugural season at Musikaliska, with a series of concerts throughout the year. The orchestra has been invited to perform at Young Euro Classic 2014 in Berlin and at King’s Place in London in 2015. As always, however, the highlight of the year is the weeklong musical feast at the enchanting rococo theatre Confidencen in the month of June. This year Christoph Willibald Gluck is the inspiring muse. The Bavarian composer reacted strongly upside down and fused with Gluck in the creation against the overly ornate and often superficial of a neoclassical jazz. Early in the eighteenth century drinking songs replaced the braying of horses, the building by then housing a tavern. It was in 1753, at the instigation of Queen Lovisa Ulrika (1720-82), that the architect Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz transformed the building into a theatre. The auditorium was embellished in rococo style with room for a little over two hundred specta tors. After two extensions, his contract will now run until the end of the 2019-2020 season. His successful work in Pittsburgh is captured on CD by the Japanese label Exton. So far, Mahler's Symphonies Nos. 1, 3, 4 and 5, Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 and Richard Strauss' Ein Heldenleben have been released to critical acclaim. The recording of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 won an ICMA 2012 Award. With great success, Honeck and his orchestra present themselves regularly to the European audience.     „...to see once more how sounds turn into higher words.“ Eleonore Büning, June 2018 ELENA BASHKIROVA PIANO Biography The Moscow-born pianist Elena Bashkirova studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in the masterclass led by her father, the renowned pianist and music teacher Dimitrij Bashkirov. The various facets of her creative activity – orchestral pieces, chamber music, recitals, sonG accompaniment and programinG – are all equally important to Elena Bashkirova, and her experiences in each area provide a constant source of inspiration for her work in the others. Elena Bashkirova explores classical and romantic repertoire as well as twentieth-century music; her work has been stronGly influenced by collaborations and exchanGe with artists such as Pierre Boulez, Sergiu Celibidache, Christoph von Dohnányi and Michael Gielen. She enjoys long- standing partnerships with conductors such as Lawrence Foster, Karl-Heinz Steffens, Ivor Bolton, Manfred Honeck and Antonello Manacorda. Her 2016 recordinG of Tchaikovsky’s “The Seasons, op. 37b” and “Album for the YounG, op. 39” received the ICMA Award in the Solo Instrument cateGory. In addition to her solo proGrammes, she is very passionate about vocal music and accompanies artists such as Matthias Goerne, René Pape, Robert Holl, Dorothea Röschmann and Anna Netrebko. Geburtstag wir 2020 feiern? «Freude, schöner Götterfunken» vielleicht? Keine schlechte Idee: Für Beethoven war die Freude, dieses göttliche WGefühl, ein Leitmotiv beim Komponieren – er selbst sah sich als Feuerbringer, als Bote des Götterfunkens, den seine Musik zünden sollte. Dabei wollte er die leidende Menschheit mit seiner Kunst erfreuen, die Zerstrittenen einen. Mit Friedrich Schillers berühmten Versen bescheinigt er der Freude: «Deine Zauber binden wieder, / was die Mode streng geteilt; / alle Menschen werden Brüder, / wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt.» Was für ein aktueller Gedanke! Heute teilt «die Mode», also der Zeitgeist, die Gesellschaft mehr denn je. Weltweit öffnet sich die Kluft zwischen Links und Rechts oder Arm und Reich. Hass- botschaften und Populismus untergraben die Verständigung und Vernunft. Was kann da noch helfen? Beethovens Antwort lautet: das gemeinsame Freudenerlebnis. Und wo könnte es besser statt- Michael Haefliger finden als im Konzert, das sich von allen anderen gesellschaftlichen Intendant LUCERNE FESTIVAL oder kulturellen Angeboten durch den Aspekt der Gemeinsam- keit abhebt? Ein Buch liest man für sich allein, und auch in einem 1 Museum betrachtet jeder die Gemälde für sich selbst. Der Sport wiederum lebt sogar von der Rivalität, und den politischen Diskurs prägen ohnehin die gegensätzlichen Überzeugungen. Im Konzert- saal aber kommen Menschen zusammen, die eigentlich so vieles trennt – das Alter, die Herkunft, die soziale und politische Posi- tion –, und erleben dort miteinander etwas Beglückendes, sie Freude an der Musik. teilen die Gefühle, sie atmen mit der Musik.
