They are closely related to the sexually reproducing slough crayfish, Procambarus fallax, which is native to the southeastern United States. Previous studies have shown that marbled crayfish are morphologically very similar to P. fallax. However, different fitness traits, reproductive incompatibility and substantial genetic differences suggest that the marbled crayfish should be considered an independent species. This article provides its formal description and scientific name, Procambarus virgin- alis sp. nov. Key words: parthenogenesis, annulus ventralis, genetic analysis, mitochondrial DNA Introduction Marbled crayfish were first described in 2001 as the only known obligatory parthenogen among the approximately 15,000 decapod crustaceans (Scholtz et al., 2003). The animals were first described in the German aquarium trade in the late 1990s (Scholtz et al., 2003) and became widely distributed in subsequent years under their German name "Marmorkrebs". Stable populations have developed from anthropogenic releases in various countries including Madagascar, Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia and Ukraine (Chucholl et al., 2012; Jones et al., 2009; Kawai et al., 2009; Liptak et al., 2016; Lokkos et al., 2016; Novitsky & Son, 2016; Patoka et al., 2016). -

OHIO DIVISION OF WILDLIFE Marbled Crayfish (Marmokrebs) Control in Ohio Injurious Aquatic Invasive Species (IAIS) are animals that cause or are likely to cause damage or harm to native ecosystems or to commercial, agricultural, or recreational activities that are dependent on these ecosystems. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife has the authority to establish an active list of Ohio IAIS high-risk species through a risk-analysis process to evaluate non-native candidate species via Ohio Administrative Code 1501:31-19-01. Listed species are unlawful to possess, import, or sell unless dead and/or preserved. Prevention: Risk Reduction State and federal partners are working to eliminate the risk of invasive Marbled Crayfish (also known as Marmokrebs) by preventing this Ohio-listed IAIS from public possession and sales in Ohio and to prevent their introduction and spread in Ohio waters and fish culture facilities. Background Marbled Crayfish (Marmokrebs) • Adult size – 10 to 13 cm (4 to 6 inches). Procambarus fallax f. virginalis • Grow and mature rapidly in captivity. • Not native to Ohio, Great Lakes or Ohio River watersheds. • Not known to occur in the wild, except through accidental or purposeful release. • Mostly a cultured species in the North American and European pet trade. “Marmokrebs” is its European common name. An all-female species, it reproduces asexually through parthenogenesis. • Closely related to the slough crayfish, Procambarus fallax, native to Florida and southern Georgia. Current Status, Management, Control and Exclusion in Ohio • Marbled crayfish have been defined as a high-risk IAIS in Ohio as they are non-native, adult females have a high reproductive capacity, and they can displace native crayfish. -

Introduction Crayfish are the largest invertebrates found in European freshwaters north of the Mediterannean region, where river-crabs (Potamon) also occur. Some crayfish attain body lengths greater than 25 cm and exceed 350 g in weight. These decapod crustaceans are omnivores, feeding on a wide variety of small invertebrates, fish, algae and higher aquatic plants, including some riparian vegetation. They also scavenge on dead and dying plants and animals. However, their quantitative role in the trophic economy of streams and lakes is not well understood, especially in relation to population biomass and potential competition with fish. Like the latter, however, crayfish have long been prized by man as a source of food, and in parts of Europe some species have been exploited commercially for many centuries. The most notable of these is the fishery based on the red-clawed or noble crayfish Astacus astacus, which was decimated by the lethal plague fungus Aphanomyces astaci in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Importations of relatively large species from North America, which are resistant to the fungus but can act as carriers, has led to concerns for the continued existence and conservation of native European species, several of which are now listed as endangered species. -

Frank Abstract Crustaceans possess a huge variety of body plans and inhabit most regions of Earth, specializing in the aquatic realm. Their diversity of form and living space has resulted in equally diverse eye designs. This chapter reviews the latest state of knowledge in crustacean vision concentrating on three areas: spectral sensitivities, ontogenetic development of spectral sen sitivity, and the temporal properties of photoreceptors from different environments. Visual ecology is a binding element of the chapter and within this framework the astonishing variety of stomatopod (mantis shrimp) spectral sensitivities and the environmental pressures molding them are examined in some detail. The quantity and spectral content of light changes dra matically with depth and water type and, as might be expected, many adaptations in crustacean photoreceptor design are related to this governing environmental factor. Spectral and temporal tuning may be more influenced by bioluminescence in the deep ocean, and the spectral quality of light at dawn and dusk is probably a critical feature in the visual worlds of many shallow-water crustaceans.
