Frank Abstract Crustaceans possess a huge variety of body plans and inhabit most regions of Earth, specializing in the aquatic realm. Their diversity of form and living space has resulted in equally diverse eye designs. This chapter reviews the latest state of knowledge in crustacean vision concentrating on three areas: spectral sensitivities, ontogenetic development of spectral sen sitivity, and the temporal properties of photoreceptors from different environments. Visual ecology is a binding element of the chapter and within this framework the astonishing variety of stomatopod (mantis shrimp) spectral sensitivities and the environmental pressures molding them are examined in some detail. The quantity and spectral content of light changes dra matically with depth and water type and, as might be expected, many adaptations in crustacean photoreceptor design are related to this governing environmental factor. Spectral and temporal tuning may be more influenced by bioluminescence in the deep ocean, and the spectral quality of light at dawn and dusk is probably a critical feature in the visual worlds of many shallow-water crustaceans. -

Especially alarming are recent confirmation of two distantly separated marbled crayfish Procambarus fallax f. virginalis populations in Ukraine and indications of more North American cambarids present in the local pet market. The present study aimed to investigate crayfish species availability within the Ukrainian pet trade together with the climate match and risk they represent to the freshwater ecosystems generally and indigenous crayfish species in particular. Altogether, 15 NICS belonging to all three crayfish families were detected. Considering their origin, availability, probability of establishment, invasiveness and further aspects, marbled crayfish and red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii appear to be potentially the most troubling. -

Ozier9, and Alan Cressler10 Abstract We provide an annotated checklist of species recorded from caves and other subterranean habitats in the state of Georgia, USA. We report 281 species (228 invertebrates and 53 vertebrates), including 51 troglobionts (cave-obligate species), from more than 150 sites (caves, springs, and wells). Endemism is high; of the troglobionts, 17 (33 % of those known from the state) are endemic to Georgia and seven (14 %) are known from a single cave. We identified three biogeographic clusters of troglobionts. Two clusters are located in the northwestern part of the state, west of Lookout Mountain in Lookout Valley and east of Lookout Mountain in the Valley and Ridge. In addition, there is a group of tro- globionts found only in the southwestern corner of the state and associated with the Upper Floridan Aquifer. At least two dozen potentially undescribed species have been collected from caves; clarifying the taxonomic status of these organisms would improve our understanding of cave biodiversity in the state. -

NOTES AND NEWS HORTON H. HOBS, JR. (29 MARCH 1914-22 MARCH 1994) BY J. F. FITZPATRICK, JR. Department of Biological Sciences, University of South Alabama, Mobile, Alabama 36688, USA Science, and the crustacean community in particular, suffered a significant loss with the death of Horton Holcombe Hobbs, Jr., at his home in Falls Church, Virginia, USA, one week before his 80th birthday. Although he will be most remembered for his work with the Decapoda Cambaridae, his more than 200 published titles (many of book/monograph length) covered a broad spectrum of competence. In the cambarids, he described 42% of the known species and sub- species, erected the family Cambaridae to receive most of the North American forms, and designated five genera and 14 subgenera; additionally he published authoritatively on the Madagascar and South American parastacids, freshwater crabs, freshwater shrimps, entocytherid ostracods, ecology of freshwater com- munities, and histology and cytology of invertebrates. Bom in Alachua County, Florida, he matriculated to the University of Florida, Gainesville, in 1931 intending to study music. A fortuitous circumstance in his freshman year convinced him to study crawfishes (as he called them in conver- sation), and the rest is well known. After receiving his B.S. in 1934, he obtained his M.S. in 1936, and his Ph.D. in 1940, working under the direction of J. Speed Rogers. His initial interest was in ecology, but he discovered to his frustration- all too common in invertebrate studies-that the taxomony of Florida crawfishes was too rudimentary for accurate work, and he set out to rectify this for that state alone. -

Crandall, Ph.D. Department of Integrative Biology Brigham University Provo, Utah 84602 Presented to The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission August 31, 2005 1 Introduction Three species of the crayfish genus Procambarus inhabit the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas, namely, Procambarus reimeri, Procambarus tenuis, and the more wide-ranging species, Procambarus liberorum. Two of these crayfishes (Procambarus reimeri and Procambarus liberorum) are Arkansas endemics (Robison and Allen, 1995). Unfortunately, little is known of the genetics, distributional ranges of each of these species, conservation status of each, and/or their precise systematic relationships. In an effort to correct some of these problems, this study was undertaken to specifically look at these three species. Objectives The intention of this present study was to accurately portray the current conservation status. distribution, and genetics of three Ouachita Mountains crayfishes of the genus Procambarus. Specific objectives of the study were: 1. To establish a baseline distribution and status of three crayfishes: Procambarus tenuis, Procambarus reimeri, and Procambarus liberorum; 2. To employ genetic analyses to clarify the taxonomic status of these three crayfish species of the genus Procambarus relative to other Procambarus species in the area; and 3. To document the diversity and distribution of the crayfish fauna in areas of the Ouachita Mountains, Arkansas. Methods and Materials Field work was conducted from March, 2005 through the spring and into July, 2005. The majority of collections were made during March, April, May and continued into early June, 2005 when wet conditions were optimal. -

Any mistakes that result in damage to the Gulf Coast ecosystems will surely create an uproar on the scale of the BP oil spill. There are many of us here today who can comment on the science of that with more expertise than I have. My mission today is to remind all of you that you have a responsibility not only to the folks who will live within the shadow of the new nuclear plants, but also to those who cannot speak for themselves, and who are perhaps not even recognized by most of us. For this reason, I have given you copies of a paper written by Stephen J. Walsh of the US Geological Survey entitled Freshwater Macrofauna of Florida Karst Habitats. The aim of the paper is to emphasize several very important points: 1. You must understand that what affects salt water, as in the Gulf of Mexico, also affects freshwater habitats, as the water from the Gulf interacts significantly with the water of the Floridan Aquifer in the location you have chosen. 2. With the exception of those parts of Florida that have already used up freshwater resources in their area, and who have already turned to desalinization, the Floridan Aquifer is THE source of fresh water for all Floridians who live in the western half of the state. -
