Ozier9, and Alan Cressler10 Abstract We provide an annotated checklist of species recorded from caves and other subterranean habitats in the state of Georgia, USA. We report 281 species (228 invertebrates and 53 vertebrates), including 51 troglobionts (cave-obligate species), from more than 150 sites (caves, springs, and wells). Endemism is high; of the troglobionts, 17 (33 % of those known from the state) are endemic to Georgia and seven (14 %) are known from a single cave. We identified three biogeographic clusters of troglobionts. Two clusters are located in the northwestern part of the state, west of Lookout Mountain in Lookout Valley and east of Lookout Mountain in the Valley and Ridge. In addition, there is a group of tro- globionts found only in the southwestern corner of the state and associated with the Upper Floridan Aquifer. At least two dozen potentially undescribed species have been collected from caves; clarifying the taxonomic status of these organisms would improve our understanding of cave biodiversity in the state.

Biologists have long been interested in organisms that live permanently below ground for a host of reasons, which include studies of extremophiles, evolutionary process, optic system and pigment degeneration, simplified food webs, and trophic dynamics. Subterranean organisms can be broken into simple non-taxonomic assemblages including stygobionts (obligate groundwater inhabitants) and troglobionts (obligate terrestrial cave inhabitants). One of the exciting aspects to this field of study includes the fact that many species living in caves could be described as “transitional” in that the morphology of a given species does not yet (and may never) represent the full suite of characters typically associated with permanent life below ground (e.g., loss of the visual system, loss of pigment, resistance to starvation, etc.) in a condition known as “troglomorphy.” The study of stygobiotic organisms has advanced such that live specimens are more frequently being maintained in the laboratory for biological study and experimentation.

    NOTES AND NEWS HORTON H. HOBS, JR. (29 MARCH 1914-22 MARCH 1994) BY J. F. FITZPATRICK, JR. Department of Biological Sciences, University of South Alabama, Mobile, Alabama 36688, USA Science, and the crustacean community in particular, suffered a significant loss with the death of Horton Holcombe Hobbs, Jr., at his home in Falls Church, Virginia, USA, one week before his 80th birthday. Although he will be most remembered for his work with the Decapoda Cambaridae, his more than 200 published titles (many of book/monograph length) covered a broad spectrum of competence. In the cambarids, he described 42% of the known species and sub- species, erected the family Cambaridae to receive most of the North American forms, and designated five genera and 14 subgenera; additionally he published authoritatively on the Madagascar and South American parastacids, freshwater crabs, freshwater shrimps, entocytherid ostracods, ecology of freshwater com- munities, and histology and cytology of invertebrates. Bom in Alachua County, Florida, he matriculated to the University of Florida, Gainesville, in 1931 intending to study music. A fortuitous circumstance in his freshman year convinced him to study crawfishes (as he called them in conver- sation), and the rest is well known. After receiving his B.S. in 1934, he obtained his M.S. in 1936, and his Ph.D. in 1940, working under the direction of J. Speed Rogers. His initial interest was in ecology, but he discovered to his frustration- all too common in invertebrate studies-that the taxomony of Florida crawfishes was too rudimentary for accurate work, and he set out to rectify this for that state alone.

    CHAPTER 8 Field Sampling Techniques for Crayfish Eric R. Larson1,* and Julian D. Olden2 Introduction Why do we study crayfi sh? Answers may range from their cultural or economic value (Jones et al. 2006) to ecological importance (Usio and Townsend 2004) to the high conservation need of many species (Taylor et al. 2007). Alternatively, one justifi cation for the emergence of crayfi sh as model organisms (e.g., Crandall 2000) has been their ubiquity and ease of collection relative to a rewarding range of biological insights. For example, Thomas Henry Huxley (1884) in his introduction to the study of zoology framed his book around crayfi sh in part because the “[the crayfi sh] is readily obtained.” Yet those of us who need to quantitatively sample crayfi sh recognize that “readily obtained” does not necessarily translate into representative of broader populations or communities. Huxley (1884) might be countered by observations like those of Rabeni et al. (1997), who note that no crayfi sh sampling method is without biases that may misrepresent attributes ranging from relative abundance to size and age structure of populations. Ultimately, quantitative sampling for crayfi sh presents a number of challenges to confound even the most experienced of fi eld biologists. Writing a comprehensive review of fi eld sampling methods for crayfi sh must accommodate both the diversity of crayfi sh themselves and the diversity of researchers interested in them. Wagner, Nongame Aquatics Biologist, AGFC David Kampwerth, Karst Biologist, USFWS Mike Slay, The Nature Conservancy August 10, 2005 Abstract Cambarus zophanastes is a cave crayfish endemic to a single cave in north Arkansas and listed as endangered by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. While it has been suspected to occur in other nearby caves, this has not been documented. A crayfish collected from one of these caves in 2002 was believed upon examination to be a new species and notC. zophanastes. After repeated attempts, cave divers observed nine cave crayfish in this cave and captured five thereof. Tissue samples were collected from these crayfish for analysis and four survived to be released back into the cave. The fifth crayfish expired in handling and was preserved to be deposited in a museum as reference material. Genetic analyses suggest that these crayfish may be C. zophanastes. Additional tissue should be collected from C. zophanastes for comparison, since the analyses only included one specimen for C. zophanastes.     Common Name: DOUGHERTY PLAIN CAVE CRAYFISH Scientific Name: Cambarus (Jugicambarus) cryptodytes Hobbs Other Commonly Used Names: none Previously Used Scientific Names: none Family: Cambaridae Rarity Ranks: G2G3/S1 State Legal Status: Threatened Federal Legal Status: none Description: This is the only albino crayfish known to occur in Georgia. Eyes are present but not pigmented, and the claws and legs are slender and appear fragile. The antennae are approximately twice as long as the body. This species reaches a maximum total body length of about 65 mm (3 inches). Similar Species: This is the only known albino crayfish occurring in Georgia. Habitat: This species is known only from subterranean habitats. It has been seen and collected in underwater caves and has also been collected from wells. Diet: Nothing is known about the diet of the Dougherty Plain cave crayfish. Like other crayfishes, it is likely an opportunistic omnivore and may even prey on the troglobitic salamander Haideotriton wallacei. Life History: Because this crayfish is a troglobite (an animal that lives entirely in the dark parts of caves), very little is known of its life history. Males in reproductive condition have been collected in July, September, and October; no females with eggs have been found. Some researchers hypothesize that cave crayfishes live for several decades. Survey Recommendations: Researchers have been able to catch several individuals of this species in study wells with a modified funnel trap. SCUBA diving in springs along the Flint River has also yielded specimens of this species. Range: All records of the Dougherty Plain cave crayfish are from the Dougherty Plain physiographic province, a karst topography where springs, seeps, and caves have formed within the limestone geology.

    .1 DISTRIBUTION AND EVOLUTION OF FLORIDA'S TROGLOBITIC CRAYFISHES RICHARD FRANZ AND DAVID S. LEE' ABSTRACT: The current knowledge of Florida's troglobitic crayfish fauna is discussed, inter- pretations of distributional and ecological patterns are reviewed, and an explanation of their evolutionary history is attempted. These crayfishes are restricted to certain geological formations that have light to nonexis- tent elastic overburdens. Areas with moderate to heavy accumulations over the carbonate rocks lack these crustaceans. The Crystal River Formation, a group of highly soluble Eocene limestones, is the most important geological element influencing the distribution of most Florida cave-dwelling crayfishes. Members of the Procambarus lucifugus complex (with the possible exception of an undescribed species from Lake County), Procambarus pallidus, Troglocambarus maclanei, and Cambarus cry ptodytes, are apparently confined to this for- mation. The remaining species are confined to other limestones (Procambarus acherontis and Procambarus species from Lake County in the Hawthorne Formation, Procambarus milleri in the Miami Oolite, Procambarus horsti and Procambarus orcinus in the St. Marks Forma- tion). Field observations suggest that available sources of food energy dictate which species groups inhabit particular cave systems. Species complexes that are most restricted to en- vironments which provide large accumulations of organic detritus become ecologically and geographically isolated from other populations and exhibit increased speciation. For example, members of the Procambarus lucifugus complex seem to have demanding energy budgets and occur only in localized karst areas exhibiting mature features and high energy input. Dependency on constant energy supplies provided by large sinkhole entrances and/or bat roosts probably limits their dispersal ability.
