Major fishing closures Why do we close areas to fishing? 60 Areas can be closed to fishing for a variety of reasons but mainly to protect fish and fish habitat, to

promote a fair share of the catch among the community or for safety reasons. Areas can be closed fishing closuresMajor permanently or temporarily or at a specific time of year. Fishing restrictions may apply in other areas i.e. certain types of fishing gear may not be permitted for use or certain species may not be allowed to be taken. Closures below and above dams and weirs protect fish where they gather to or migrate. Fishing closures apply to threatened and protected species. It is an offence to take, or attempt to take, harm or possess threatened or protected species (see page 53).

Freshwater fishing closures are summarised in the following tables. The term ‘any methods’ means line fishing (rod or hand line), trapping, netting and bait and collection (using

Major fishing closures methods such as hand gathering or digging) for all species is not permitted in the waters specified during the period specified, unless otherwise stated.

Summary of fishing closures for major freshwater fish species The fish species listed in column 1 cannot be taken in waters listed in column 2 during the period specified in column 3.
