  • Reform and Rejuvenation of the Universities of Mysore and Karnatak: an Agenda and a Roadmap
Reform and Rejuvenation of the Universities of Mysore and Karnatak: An Agenda and A Roadmap ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Karnataka Jnana Aayoga (Karnataka Knowledge Commission) Government Of karnataka October 2009 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Foreword The present time is characterised by the dawn of Knowledge societies. In these emerging times of knowledge society and economy, there are paradigm shifts in our understanding of and approach to education. Higher education has, more than ever, become both a singular tool of pursuance of the realities of Knowledge society and an end in itself. As a consequence, higher education has moved from Government’s interest to its key agenda. Universities set standards in higher education. Quality and excellence are the defining principles and the Universities have to pursue them relentlessly. In Karnataka, much is desired from University education. A sense of wanting in terms of quality and services are often felt. Simultaneously, a huge potential for excellence is also present. Consequentially, a sense of urgency strongly prevails with respect to the task of restructuring, rejuvenating and revitalising of the University education. In this background, Karnataka Knowledge Commission took up the task of transforming two of the oldest Universities of the state – Universities of Mysore and Karnatak, into trend-setting ones. The idea was to have a model in the context of the state towards which other state Universites can look up to, emulate and benefit from its expertise and experience. Dr. K. Kasturirangan, Chairman of Karnataka Knowledge Commission, constituted an Expert Committee with Prof. (Dr.) N. R. Madhava Menon, Prof. P. Rama Rao, Prof. Goverdhan Mehta, and Prof. M. S. Thimmappa on 12th May, 2009.

HERITAGE OF MYSORE DIVISION - Mysore, Mandya, Hassan, Chickmagalur, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chamarajanagar Districts. Prepared by: Dr. J.V.Gayathri, Deputy Director, Arcaheology, Museums and Heritage Department, Palace Complex, Mysore 570 001. Phone:0821-2424671. The rule of Kadambas, the Chalukyas, Gangas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagar rulers, the Bahamanis of Gulbarga and Bidar, Adilshahis of Bijapur, Mysore Wodeyars, the Keladi rulers, Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan and the rule of British Commissioners have left behind Forts, Magnificient Palaces, Temples, Mosques, Churches and beautiful works of art and architecture in Karnataka. The fauna and flora, the National parks, the animal and bird sanctuaries provide a sight of wild animals like elephants, tigers, bisons, deers, black bucks, peacocks and many species in their natural habitat. A rich variety of flora like: aromatic sandalwood, pipal and banyan trees are abundantly available in the State. The river Cauvery, Tunga, Krishna, Kapila – enrich the soil of the land and contribute to the State’s agricultural prosperity. The water falls created by the rivers are a feast to the eyes of the outlookers. Historical bakground: Karnataka is a land with rich historical past. It has many pre-historic sites and most of them are in the river valleys. The pre-historic culture of Karnataka is quite distinct from the pre- historic culture of North India, which may be compared with that existed in Africa. 1 Parts of Karnataka were subject to the rule of the Nandas, Mauryas and the Shatavahanas; Chandragupta Maurya (either Chandragupta I or Sannati Chandragupta Asoka’s grandson) is believed to have visited Sravanabelagola and spent his last years in this place.

  • Unique Tribes of Coorg
International Journal of Research in Humanities and Social Studies Volume 2, Issue 10, October 2015, PP 61-65 ISSN 2394-6288 (Print) & ISSN 2394-6296 (Online) Unique Tribes of Coorg Lalitha K. P. Assistant Professor, Department of Kannada, BMS College for Women, Bengaluru, India ABSTRACT This document gives a study of the extinct tribes in Coorg (Kodagu), a district in Karnataka state, India. In this paper an attempt has been made to discuss various aspects of life of tribes in Coorg. An analysis of Social Life of tribal people in Coorg has been done with an emphasis on their customs and traditions like marriage, status of women etc. Keywords: Coorg, Kodagu, Kodava, Tribes. INTRODUCTION The diversity and variety and of course, the underlying unity of India is obvious. These people of each region of this vast land of the Indian Union have certain distinctive strands and features-in face and figure, food and dress, language and literature, faculties and traits. Therefore each region has some uniqueness of its own. Yet a common culture binds the people of India together. India extending from Kanyakumari in the south to the Himalayas in the north is the motherland of the Indians. In this vast tract of land, Kodagu is a very tiny spot, which had once the status of a state and now forms a district of Karnataka. The Coorg tribes are entirely different from the other communities of South India. They have their own unique social customs. Their dress and ornaments do not have anything in common with what is generally known as typically South India.

  • Hassan District
District Disaster Management Plan 2019-20 Hassan District Prepared By: District Disaster Management Authority Hassan District, Hassan Office of the Deputy Commissioner, B.M. Road, Hassan – 573201 E-mail: [email protected] DEOC Helpline: 1077 (Toll Free) 08172-261111 PREFACE The District Disaster Management Plan (DDMP) is a key part of an emergency management. It will play a significant role to address the unexpected disasters that occur in the district effectively. The information available in DDMP is valuable in terms of its use during disaster. Based on the history of various disasters that occur in the district, the plan has been so designed as an action plan rather than a resources book. This plan has been prepared which is based on the guidelines provided by the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM). While preparing this plan, most of the issues, relevant to crisis management, have been carefully dealt with. During the time of disaster there will be a delay before out side help arrives. At first, self-help is essential and efforts have been made to collect and develop this plan to make it more applicable and effective to handle any type of disaster. The National Disaster Management Act was brought in the year 2005 to promote a proactive approach focusing on all phases of Disaster Management. Accordingly, Karnataka state government has formed the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) and District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMA) at all the districts for effective management of disasters in the District through the implementation of District Disaster Management Plan. Hassan district has a geographical area of 6,845 Sq.
