Jesus Walks on Water

Matthew 14:22-33

Characters: Narrator, , Waves and Wind, Peter, Other Disciples

Narrator: Jesus had just finished feeding 5,000 people from a very small amount of fish and bread. Even though there was so little food, Jesus miraculously fed everyone, with lots of food leftover. After Jesus gave the benediction, he dismissed the crowd, and told the disciples to start preparing for their next trip.

Jesus: Peter, I want you and the other disciples to use that boat, and cross the sea of Galilee. I’m going to go up to that hill to pray, and I will meet up with you on the other side.

Peter: Okay Jesus, we will load up the boats and travel across the sea.

Narrator: The disciples got into the boat, and pushed off into the sea. Jesus left the shore, and went up into the mountains to pray to God once again. Evening came, and Jesus finished his praying and came down the mountain. He saw the boat out in the sea—it was a considerable distance, but he decided he would catch up to it. He began walking on the sea to the boat.

Peter: What’s that figure out in the distance? It’s coming to the boat!

Narrator: The disciples looked across the sea, and it looked like a ghost was walking right towards their boat. Peter and the other disciples began to get scared.

Peter: It’s a ghost! The ghost is walking across the top of the sea!

Jesus: Peter, do not fear. Take courage! It is I, Jesus. Do not be afraid.

Peter: Lord, if it is you, then tell me to come and walk on the water to you.

Jesus: Come, and walk towards me Peter.

Narrator: Peter lifted himself over the edge of the boat, and put his feet down on the water surface. He was standing on the water! He began walking towards Jesus. Suddenly, the wind and waves began to pick up. Peter looked around, and saw the ship he was on started to be tossed around 2

by the sea. Peter began to fear the sea, and was worried about drowning. Suddenly, Peter began sinking into the sea! Peter tried to run as fast as he could to Jesus, but he was falling into the sea.

Peter: Jesus, help me! Save me!

Narrator: Jesus ran to Peter’s side, grabbed his hand, and pulled him out of the water.

Jesus: You of little faith! Why did you doubt me?

Narrator: Jesus helped Peter to the boat, and both of them climbed inside of it. Once Jesus got into the boat, the wind and the waves died down instantly. The disciples were all amazed that they just saw Jesus walk on water, and the bowed down to worship him.

Other Disciples: Truly, you are the Son of God.
