The friendship of the pair and their Not about Heroes to war is the focus of the performance Not About Heroes. Edinburgh seems like a fitting location for the show as it gives the audience the Not about Heroes to witness the story in the very city that the pair met. Siegfried Sassoon was already a published and respected poet before he Not about Heroes the aspiring writer Wilfred Owen. The younger poet was still finding his way with the written word when Sassoon was transferred to Craiglockhart to receive treatment for his mental and physical health. Owen seeks advice from the more experienced writer and when Sassoon recognises the potential of Owen the men strike up a friendship. They bond over words and poetry and disagree over golf. Whilst the pair find mutual ground the threat of returning to the front line is always on the horizon and this causes much grief and anguish. The play is written by Stephen MacDonald and it is his script that conveys the drama of the show. The performance itself feels on the long side and takes a while to get going. The strength in the drama is the friendship, but this offers very little in conflict. Never the less Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon are compelling characters and their story is a proud and important one. Prolific fiction writer turns his hand to poetry with some beautifully worded reflections on life. Stephen if Not about Heroes knew anything about the history you would know that the conflict you are seeking is that Not about Heroes love as two men was forbidden. A poorly researched review! I saw it and knowing a jot about history was incredibly moved by it. I would recommend everyone to see this incredible production. Hi Don, I was reviewing the performance, not the history of Not about Heroes relationship between Owen Not about Heroes Sassoon or the decriminalization of homosexuality which has only been decriminalised in Scotland, where the majority of the performance takes place, for 37 years — not 50 as written in your comment. If you want a history lesson on Owen Not about Heroes Sassoon, I suggest you read a history book and not a theatre review. And my name is Steven not Stephen. Thanks for the comment. Not about Heroes by Stephen MacDonald. It is sweet and fitting to die for one's country. This moving play is about the poetic life and the inter relationship between two of the finest Great War poets: Owen who died and Siegfried Sasson who didn't. Told by means of letters and poetry, Not About Heroes paints a vivid picture of the war. It was staged to Get A Copy. Paperback98 pages. Published September 27th by Samuel French, Inc. Having first seen this play performed to perfection at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, I immediately ordered the script. And I bought two volumes of poetry - one of Sassoon's and one of Owen's - and poured over them. Next I wrote a grant so Not about Heroes could produce a staged reading of the play. It was mesmerizing. Now I am directing a full production and have the talents of two fine actors and a set designer who understands the bareness of the scenes. The poetry - with helpful lighting - is the scenic design. Anyone who only reads this text will not get the subtleties, the slow growing relationship, the kindness, love and tragedy that befall the two poets. But mostly they will not find the rich core of war torn emotions and devastation, the futility Not about Heroes madness war invokes. This is what makes this script so important, so universal and pertinent. Mar 31, Jerrica rated it liked it Shelves: midd-first-year. Tasty homoerotic fan-fiction. Fiction, that is. Dulce et decorum est, indeed, Mr. Dec 30, Emily Pinching rated it it was amazing Shelves: favourite-books. Incredibly amazing! Re-reading, it is even more powerful than last time. Moving, poignant and poetic. Shelves: school-texts. Not about Heroes wasn't keen on this play, and even though I have not seen it on stage, I do not think it would work as a production, with simply two characters. I do Not about Heroes enjoy monologues in most things, but I felt that a Not about Heroes majoritively made up of them might drive me insane. The only part I truly enjoyed was the basis to it with the developement of the relationship between two real-life characters of Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon. I found it interesting, Not about Heroes probably frowned upon at the time, that I wasn't keen on this play, and even though I have not seen it on stage, I do not think it would work as a production, with simply two characters. I found it interesting, although probably frowned Not about Heroes at the time, that they were portrayed as lovers, not just friends. Otherwise, I found Not about Heroes quite dull. Yes, the story was interesting, but it would only have worked as a story in my view, not as a play. I also found it to be incredibly slow-paced, making it even more dull. Aug 23, Leigh rated it it was ok Shelves: genre-dramasubject-warsubject- war-wwiownership-library-books This was one of those books I wanted to write. And so I resent it not only for having already been written, but for not even being written particularly well. Not about Heroes a great story, of course, but history gave us the story; MacDonald doesn't add much. It's a very, very textual book--textual in the sense of drawing heavily on Sassoon's and Owen's writing, but also textual in the Not about Heroes of not subtextual. There's very little authorial interpretation going on here, which makes it a pretty flat retelling This Not about Heroes one of those books I wanted to write.
