Scope and Content Notes for the Edward Herrmann Collection

1. Biographical Information

Edward Kirk Herrmann was born July 21, 1943 in Washington, D.C. He is the son of

John Anthony and Jean Eleanor (O'Connor) Herrmann. After graduating from Bucknell

University with a B.A. in English in 1965, he studied acting at the Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (1968-1969) and at the Theater Center.

2. Information About the Collection

This collection, in six boxes, follows Edward Hemnann's professional career from the

Fall of 1965, when, following his graduation from Bucknell University, he enrolled in classes at

Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas, to about 1991, when this first part of his archive was received.

The collection includes numerous scripts, reviews, press releases, and photographs relating to his extensive work in the theatre. There are similar materials, as well as audio and video items, for the increasing number of film and television productions in which he appeared in those years. There is also a limited amount of correspondence. 3

I. Materials Related to Performances, 1965-1991.

A. Stage plays, 1966-1991.

EH received his A.B. in English from Bucknell University in 1965, and an M.A. in Drama from Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas, in 1968. While at Trinity, he was a member of the professional resident company of the Dallas Theater Center, 1965-1966, 1966-1967, 1967-1968, working with Paul Baker, Dallas Theater Managing Director and Chairman of the Drama Department at Trinity. Baker conducted Master's Degree classes at the Dallas Center, an affiliate of the Trinity University Graduate School. After his 1968 Summer trip to India for the filming of "The Banyan Tree" for Baker, EH spent 1968-1969 in London at L.A.M.D.A. as a Fulbright Scholar. He returned to Dallas in 1969-1970 as and member of the teaching staff.
