Dave Gorman's Important Astrology Experiment AVALON PUBLIC RELATIONS PRESS INFORMATION DAVE GORMAN’S IMPORTANT ASTROLOGY EXPERIMENT DAVE GORMAN’S IMPORTANT ASTROLOGY EXPERIMENT Every day millions of people consult their horoscopes. Is it wise to follow the advice of astrologers? The world of science has not been brave enough to answer this question. Until now. Step forward DAVE GORMAN (Pisces). He’s a multi award-winning comedian, but in this brand new series he’s also an ‘unorthodox experimental scientist’ on a real life comic adventure into the world of astrology. For 40 days and 40 nights DAVE GORMAN has given up normal life. Instead he has scoured the horoscopes of 20 leading astrologers. His task – to follow their advice. To ignore speculation, prediction and guesswork, but at all times to follow instruction and pursue luck. A control experiment, a man born at the same time and in the same place has ignored his horoscopes. Whose life will turn out better? Over six, thirty-minute episodes on BBC TWO, Dave will present the evidence to an astrologically balanced studio audience. Receiving help and guidance from three world-renowned, independent experts in the fields of Love, Health and Wealth – DENISE ROBERTSON (TV agony aunt and Gemini), HILARY JONES (TV doctor and Gemini) and ALVIN HALL (TV financial advisor and Cancer) – the audience will then vote on whether DAVE’S or the control’s life is turning out better. Whatever the result, we guarantee it will verify that, in DAVE’S world at least truth is stranger than fiction. Dave Gorman’s Important Astrology Experiment is a BBC Production. Written and produced by DAVE GORMAN (Pisces) and DANNY WALLACE (Scorpio) and directed by GARETH CARRIVICK (Scorpio). Executive Producer is MYFANWY MOORE (Scorpio). www.davegorman.com 1 AVALON PUBLIC RELATIONS PRESS INFORMATION DAVE GORMAN’S IMPORTANT ASTROLOGY EXPERIMENT EPISODIC INFORMATION Episode 1 On Mystic Meg's advice, Dave makes friends with an Olympic Gold Medallist, he delights a bunch of schoolchildren by somehow persuading them to assist in some manual labour and England World Cup Hero Trevor Sinclair, a man who shares Dave’s birthday, lends an unwitting hand. Episode 2 When a character called Dave Gorman appears in aussie soap Neighbours, it somehow leads our Dave Gorman to line-dance with a nine-year-old schoolboy. Meanwhile, one of astrology's big names appears to be cracking up… or is that just Dave? Episode 3 When our hero's horoscope tells him to push old people out of the way, he has no choice but to comply. Pornography, bingo, Changing Rooms star Linda Barker, and a rubber body suit all figure. And the most alarming thing is, it's all true. Suitable for all ages. Honest. Episode 4 As his important experiment passes its halfway mark, Dave finds himself in a number of uncomfortable positions; he enrages a farmer after creating a unicorn, he travels tens of thousands of miles at the drop of a hat, and he has a hose-pipe inserted where hose-pipes really shouldn't be inserted. Why? Because his horoscopes told him to, that's why! Episode 5 As his quest to prove whether or not it's wise to obey your horoscope continues, Dave is given psychic powers by Uri Geller, embarrasses himself in front of top TV executive Alan Yentob, sneaks a greyhound onto the set of Emmerdale and finds himself tired and sweaty at the hands of Vanessa Feltz. 2 AVALON PUBLIC RELATIONS PRESS INFORMATION DAVE GORMAN’S IMPORTANT ASTROLOGY EXPERIMENT Episode 6 In the final instalment of Dave's important experiment, the world will finally discover whether or not it's wise to do what your horoscope tells you to. It might not sound it; in this episode Dave finds himself dressing up as Chris Eubank, taking the longest walk of his life, and walking around a Dubai golf course in pursuit of Ian Woosnam – all in the name of science. But what will his conclusion be? How will the audience vote? You might be surprised! 3 AVALON PUBLIC RELATIONS PRESS INFORMATION DAVE GORMAN’S IMPORTANT ASTROLOGY EXPERIMENT BIOGRAPHY: DAVE GORMAN Dave is probably best known for his world search for 54 Dave Gorman’s in his previous series, The Dave Gorman Collection (BBC TWO). Originally a Perrier Award nominated stage show called Are You Dave Gorman? the adventure captured the imagination of both UK and international media and was also later successfully developed into a book by Dave and co-adventurer Danny Wallace (WHSmith Book Award 2002 and Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize nominated), which was re-released by Ebury Press on the 4th July 2002. The show was taken to New York in 2001, where, after enjoying an extended run, it was acclaimed by Time Out New York as their “favourite show of 2001” and has subsequently been nominated for a prestigious Drama Desk Award. Also an established writer, Dave wrote The Mrs Merton Show (BBC ONE) with Caroline Aherne, Craig Cash and Henry Normal. The show went on to win two consecutive BAFTA’s for Best Entertainment Series and Best Chat Show. Starring in two series of the Comedy Network (C5) Dave has also appeared on Have I Got News For You (BBC ONE), Absolutely Fabulous (BBC ONE), They Think It’s All Over (BBC ONE), Never Mind The Buzzcocks (BBC TWO) and The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS). Dave is a renowned live performer having had success at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with shows such as, Reasons To Be Cheerful, a ninety minute dissertation on the lyrics of the Ian Dury song of the same name, and Dave Gorman’s Better World – where Dave wrote to over 2000 local papers requesting sincere suggestions from their readers for making the world a better place. ] BIOGRAPHY: DANNY WALLACE Danny Wallace is a writer, producer and award-winning journalist, who's written for the likes of The Guardian, The Independent and Melody Maker. As a producer, he's worked with some of comedy's fastest-rising stars, making shows with people like Ross Noble and The Boosh, as well as working on British Comedy Award winning shows like Dead Ringers (BBC Radio 4) and The Sunday Format (BBC Radio 4). 4 AVALON PUBLIC RELATIONS PRESS INFORMATION DAVE GORMAN’S IMPORTANT ASTROLOGY EXPERIMENT His work with Dave Gorman includes The Dave Gorman Collection (BBC TWO, co-writer/co-producer) and the book, Are You Dave Gorman?, which was recently nominated for a WH Smith Award for Best Travel Book. He is Dave's former flatmate, 25 years old, and describes Dave's sometimes extreme actions during the making of this series as "pretty standard fare, for anyone who's shared a flat with him..." 5.

  • 2008 Programme Review
CHANNEL 4 REVIEW OF 2008 Major Themes in 2008 2008 was a year of dramatic creative renewal for Channel 4. In March, the organisation published Next on 4, a policy document laying out its public service vision for the future. Creative renewal in the schedule was evident even before then, with a raft of new programming in January occupying the space occupied in previous years by Celebrity Big Brother, which was rested. Over the course of the year, a range of authored series and campaigning programmes exemplified Channel 4’s renewed commitment to high-impact programming capable of engaging mass-market audiences, stimulating debate and generating interest in important social, political and cultural issues. However, Channel 4’s ability to fulfil its public service ambitions were curtailed by the downturn in the advertising market towards the end of the year, leading to significant reductions in the programming budget for both 2008 and 2009. In an increasingly competitive environment, Channel 4’s portfolio of channels and services maintained its viewing share at 11.9 per cent. The core channel share fell from 8.7 per cent in 2007 to 8.2 per cent in 2008. Next on 4 Dramatic changes are reshaping the UK broadcasting ecology, as it moves towards a fully digital world. Viewers will have access to dozens, if not hundreds of channels, as well as the rapidly growing variety of video services delivered online. In this context, Channel 4 reaffirmed its commitment in Next on 4 to remain a publicly-owned public service broadcaster whose primary purpose is the fulfilment of its legislative remit.

  • Reality TV and the Reinvention of Britishness
From Making Do to Making-Over: Reality TV and the Reinvention of Britishness RACHEL JENNINGS O YOU LIVE IN TRACK SUITS TO CONCEAL YOUR SAGGY TITS AND big bum? Do not despair—you can still go to the ball. If you Dare brave enough to face those scary godmothers Trinny and Susannah, they will tell you in no uncertain terms What Not to Wear. Do you suspect your garden may have inspired T. S. Eliot to write The Wasteland? No fear. The matey experts from Ground Force can transform it into a pastoral idyll in two days. Has your pokey, gloomy British house been stagnating on the market? Perhaps you need the infamous House Doctor to breeze through and eradicate both your personal history and personality with a few cans of magnolia. A significant proportion of British reality TV is in the makeover line, involving the rapid transformation of some facet of a person’s lifestyle through a process that blends fairytale themes with religious ritual. The subject (or victim) on each episode is a Cinderella character (hereafter referred to collectively as ‘‘Cindy,’’ whether an individual, couple, or family unit) who relinquishes existential responsibility and personal power to one or more authority figures. These fairy god- mothers (of both sexes) navigate Cindy through a battle to give up the past leading to her rebirth, frequently on the third or seventh day. It is easy to comprehend why makeover shows are a hit in the United States—they slot neatly into the American dream of con- stant reinvention of the self, played out on a moving frontier.

Introduction Welcome to K7’s Insight Report - Brand Funded Programming: Why It Matters Now Amidst a sea of depressing news about stalled TV productions, squeezed programming budgets and diminished ad revenues in 2020, there is one area that is perhaps set to benefit more than any other from the year’s upheavals - that of brand funded programming. A timely convergence of these financial pressures, combined with the diminishing impact of traditional advertising spots in a world of proliferating VOD platforms, has led both broadcasters and brands to put renewed effort into finding new ways to co-fund and co-develop original, entertaining programming between them. Different territories are at different stages on this journey, with varying regulatory and audience constraints leading to a highly complex global picture, but if you haven’t as yet taken the time to properly understand the opportunities, 2021 might be the time.

The research set out to investigate how much people think the BBC is worth and how that value is divided between its different services. In addition, it looked at how the introduction of a subscription system might affect the value generated by the BBC. A key aim of the research was to understand how the BBC is perceived as a public service broadcaster, offering value to people not only
