ACTS PART 5: THE OUTPOURING OF GOD’S SPIRIT AND SPIRITUAL GIFTS JOHN E BROWN I CORINTHIANS 12:4-13, 27-31; 14:1-9 May 27, 2018

 A review of the disciple’s experience in John chapter 20 and Acts chapter 2. o Acts 8:1-8, 12-18 o Acts 9:17 o Acts 10:38-48 o Acts 11:15-17 o Acts 19:1-6 o 9 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened. 11 Now suppose one of you fathers is asked by his son for a fish; he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he? 12 Or if he is asked for an egg, he will not give him a scorpion, will he? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” Luke 11:9-13 NASB

 There are varieties of spiritual gifts given by the Holy Spirit. o 4 One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church. 5 Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying. 6 But now, brethren, if I come to you , what will I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of or of knowledge or of or of teaching? 7 Yet even lifeless things, either flute or harp, in producing a sound, if they do not produce a distinction in the tones, how will it be known what is played on the flute or on the harp? I Corinthians 14:4-7 NASB

o 4 Now there are distinctive varieties and distributions of endowments (gifts, extraordinary powers distinguishing certain Christians, due to the power of divine grace operating in their souls by the Holy Spirit) and they vary, but the [Holy] Spirit remains the same. I Corinthians 12:4 AMPC

o There are three main categories of ‘grace gifts’ listed in the New Testament including those listed in I Corinthians 12:8-13 . 8 For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the according to the same Spirit; 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another by the one Spirit, 10 and to another the effecting of , and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.12 For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. I Corinthians 12:8-13 NASB . Biblical Listing Of Spiritual Gifts  Romans 12:3-6, I Corinthians 12:1-31; 14:1-40, I Peter 4:7-11  3 Categories of Gifts o Utterance: Tongues – Interpretation – prophecy o Revelation: Word of knowledge – Word of Wisdom – Discerning of Spirits o Power: Faith – Miracles – healing . There is also a listing of ‘ministry gifts’ that gives in Ephesians chapter 4. 8  Therefore it says, “WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH, HE LED CAPTIVE A HOST OF CAPTIVES, AND HE GAVE 9 GIFTS TO MEN.” (Now this expression, “He ascended,” what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.) 11 And He gave some as apostles, and some as , and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. Ephesians 4:8-13 NASB

I Corinthians 14:1-19 – A guideline for the gift of tongues  Verses 1-2 – speaking in tongues is to God o No one understands o In his spirit or by the spirit he speaks mysteries o Speaking in Tongues: My conclusion is that tongues-speech is most often either the angelic dialects of heaven or linguistic expressions uniquely shaped by the Holy Spirit that display moderate resemblance to normal human language. Such “tongues- speech” has cognitive content, but is inaccessible to us apart from the gift of interpretation. Dr. Sam Storms Ph.D

I can and because I can I will. o “Clearly Paul believed that a spiritual experience which was beyond the grasp of his mind was yet profoundly profitable.
