qualities sadhdhAma = good residence madhvanAma = the one bearing the name of madhwa Quick Meaning: ============== May he grant us good fortune, the one who provides sustenance to the world, who is amongst all jIvas, the abode of all (good) qualities, the one having the name of Madhwa Discussion: =========== jaya jaya: ========== shrIpAdarAjaru begins his poem with a quick prayer to vAyu to bring about mangaLa (auspiciousness) to all of us. This is very appropriate because scriptures describe vAyu as "parama mangaLa svarUpa" (the embodiment of auspiciousness), "pradhAna anga" (primary arm) of hari. "jaya" also means victory. The biggest victory that any jIva (sentient being) can hope for is mOxa or mukti (liberation from the cycle of birth and death). vAyu helps deserving souls reach this goal in a variety of ways - by providing correct gyana (knowledge) about the Lord, inspiring correct thoughts and actions, and finally recommending the soul's case to the Lord. After hari and lakshmi, vAyu (and brahma) has the power to propel a soul towards liberation. 6 www.vijayadasaru.net www.madhwa-online.com www.madhwa -pravachana.org "jaya" also means supreme or the highest. This too is appropriate since vAyu is considered jIvOttama (the highest amongst all jIvas). jagatrANa: ========== The shAstrAs tell us that vAyu keeps reciting the hansa mantra "hamsah sOham svAha" about 21600 times every day in all souls, offering this to hamsanAmaka paramAtma (hari). As long as vAyu is in the body, it is considered alive; once he departs, it is termed dead. That is why he is regarded as "jagatrANa" - the one who provides sustenance to the world. trANa can also be interpreted to protect or shelter. And that is true too, since he protects all worthy jIvas (and punishes bad ones). His power extends to even gods that others worship, balamindrasya girishO girishasya balam marut balam tasya harissAxat naharErbala manyatah (mahabhArata tAtparya nirNaya Canto 2 Verse 162) [The strength of Indra is girisha (rudra), girishA's strength is marut (vAyu). vAyu's strength is hari Himself. hari derives His strength from nobody.] If vAyu is the source for

  • Expectant Urbanism Time, Space and Rhythm in A
EXPECTANT URBANISM TIME, SPACE AND RHYTHM IN A SMALLER SOUTH INDIAN CITY by Ian M. Cook Submitted to Central European University Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Supervisors: Professor Daniel Monterescu CEU eTD Collection Professor Vlad Naumescu Budapest, Hungary 2015 Statement I hereby state that the thesis contains no material accepted for any other degrees in any other institutions. The thesis contains no materials previously written and/or published by another person, except where appropriate acknowledgment is made in the form of bibliographical reference. Budapest, November, 2015 CEU eTD Collection Abstract Even more intense than India's ongoing urbanisation is the expectancy surrounding it. Freed from exploitative colonial rule and failed 'socialist' development, it is loudly proclaimed that India is having an 'urban awakening' that coincides with its 'unbound' and 'shining' 'arrival to the global stage'. This expectancy is keenly felt in Mangaluru (formerly Mangalore) – a city of around half a million people in coastal south Karnataka – a city framed as small, but with metropolitan ambitions. This dissertation analyses how Mangaluru's culture of expectancy structures and destructures everyday urban life. Starting from a movement and experience based understanding of the urban, and drawing on 18 months ethnographic research amongst housing brokers, moving street vendors and auto rickshaw drivers, the dissertation interrogates the interplay between the city's regularities and irregularities through the analytical lens of rhythm. Expectancy not only engenders violent land grabs, slum clearances and the creation of exclusive residential enclaves, but also myriad individual and collective aspirations in, with, and through the city – future wants for which people engage in often hard routinised labour in the present.

  • A Discourse on the Deconstruction of Spirit Worship of Tulunadu
A Peer-Reviewed Refereed e-Journal Legend of Koragajja: A Discourse on the Deconstruction of Spirit Worship of Tulunadu Mridul C Mrinal MA in English and Comparative Literature Central University of Kerala, Kasaragod. The Social stratification in a community is often complex and ambiguous in nature. Upon the rise of each nation states and civilization, there were several parameters, which determined the social stratification. In ancient Greece, the word used to denote the divisions are genos. The ancient Greek society was divided into citizens, metics and slaves. In ancient Rome, the social stratification was identified with mainly two groups, Patricians and Plebeians. The chief resource for the social stratification parameters are economical in nature. Other factors such as tradition and beliefs are often can be said to have rooted in the wider economic subject. The term class is often associated with economics. There are usually hegemonial and subdued elements in social stratifications. In ancient Greece, the hegemonial element is found associated with the citizens, who are free and members of the assembly whereas slaves were the subdued element who were brought into slavery. In ancient Rome, the hegemonial element were the patricians whereas the plebeians were the subdued. These ideas can often be observed with Class struggle and historical materialism. The division of history into stages based on the relation of the classes is an important aspect of Historical materialism. In India, the main social stratification parameter is the caste.it could be claimed as ceremonial as well as economic in nature. BR Ambedkar observes Endogamy as a product of ceremonial caste.

  • Is the Gaudiya Vaishnava Sampradaya Connected to the Madhva Line?
Is the Gaudiya Vaishnava sampradaya connected to the Madhva line? Is the Gaudiya Vaishnava sampradaya connected to the Madhva line? – Jagadananda Das – The relationship of the Madhva-sampradaya to the Gaudiya Vaishnavas is one that has been sensitive for more than 200 years. Not only did it rear its head in the time of Baladeva Vidyabhushan, when the legitimacy of the Gaudiyas was challenged in Jaipur, but repeatedly since then. Bhaktivinoda Thakur wrote in his 1892 work Mahaprabhura siksha that those who reject this connection are “the greatest enemies of Sri Krishna Chaitanya’s family of followers.” In subsequent years, nearly every scholar of Bengal Vaishnavism has cast his doubts on this connection including S. K. De, Surendranath Dasgupta, Sundarananda Vidyavinoda, Friedhelm Hardy and others. The degree to which these various authors reject this connection is different. According to Gaudiya tradition, Madhavendra Puri appeared in the 14th century. He was a guru of the Brahma or Madhva-sampradaya, one of the four (Brahma, Sri, Rudra and Sanaka) legitimate Vaishnava lineages of the Kali Yuga. Madhavendra’s disciple Isvara Puri took Sri Krishna Chaitanya as his disciple. The followers of Sri Chaitanya are thus members of the Madhva line. The authoritative sources for this identification with the Madhva lineage are principally four: Kavi Karnapura’s Gaura-ganoddesa-dipika (1576), the writings of Gopala Guru Goswami from around the same time, Baladeva’s Prameya-ratnavali from the late 18th century, and anothe late 18th century work, Narahari’s
