The definitive version is to be found at: https://link-springer- com.wwwproxy1.library.unsw.edu.au/chapter/10.1007/978-90- 481-2927-0_21 This chapter relies on a distinction between Confucianism and Daoism made during the Han dynasty (漢朝: 206 BCE–220 CE) and further perpetuated in Chinese intellectual history. It examines the connections between pre-Qin (秦朝: 221– 206 BCE) Daoist and Confucian philosophies, focusing on their differences as well as similarities. While it has been traditionally accepted that there are many tensions, and even antagonism, between concepts and approaches in Daoist and Confucian thought, the discussion here also focuses on the historical linkages and philosophical continuities that at times blur the distinction between the two. The primary comparison here will be conducted at three levels: the individual within its environment, the socio-political world, and the cultivation of the self. These three levels of analysis are organized in three sections, from the more inclusive to the more specific. However, the sections are only theoretical divisions, since both Daoist and Confucian philosophies emphasize a concept of selfhood that focuses on an individual’s relationships with others, within a larger natural and cosmic environment. To more fully understand these comparisons, it is important also to examine the intellectual climate within which interactions between so- called Daoism and Confucianism took place. These details, including information gleaned from relatively recently discovered texts, are not merely tangential to our understanding of both philosophies. -

List of translations into English of the Shiji of Sima Qian (Ssu-ma Ch’ien) and the “Letter to Ren An” The numbered list below includes the translations into English known to me of the 130 chapters of the Shiji by Sima Qian (or, Ssu-ma Ch’ien; 145-c. 90 BCE) and of Sima Qian’s “Letter to Ren An,” which is chapter 62 of the Han Shu written by Ban Gu (32-92 CE). Please send additions and corrections to this list to me at [email protected] In the numbered list, for each of the 130 chapters of the Shiji and then the “Letter” (listed last), the translations known to me are listed in order of the date of publication. The abbreviations of the publications cited are given below, preceding the numbered list. The series of volumes edited by William Nienhauser (see the titles listed under WN in the abbreviations below) aims to translate the entire Shiji into English with scholarly annotation. Nienhauser gives a brief history of the translation of the Shiji in volume 1 of 1994 (see below, WN 1, pp. xv-xvii). The first translation into a Western language of the Shiji with scholarly annotation was into French by Édouard Chavannes, who published the first forty-seven chapters in five volumes, Les Mémoires historiques de Se-ma Ts’ien (Paris: Ernest Leroux, 1895- 1905, reprint edition, Paris: Adrien Maisonneuve, 1969). The reprint edition also included a supplementary sixth volume with translations of chapters 48-52 by Paul Demiéville and a bibliography by Timoteus Pokora of translations of chapters 48-130 of the Shiji into “English, Russian, French, German, and occasionally other European languages.” Abbreviations of Publications Cited, in Order of Date of Publication These abbreviations are used to indicate the translations of Sima Qian, Shiji into English that appear in the numbered list below. -
The Old Master
INTRODUCTION Four main characteristics distinguish this book from other translations of Laozi. First, the base of my translation is the oldest existing edition of Laozi. It was excavated in 1973 from a tomb located in Mawangdui, the city of Changsha, Hunan Province of China, and is usually referred to as Text A of the Mawangdui Laozi because it is the older of the two texts of Laozi unearthed from it.1 Two facts prove that the text was written before 202 bce, when the first emperor of the Han dynasty began to rule over the entire China: it does not follow the naming taboo of the Han dynasty;2 its handwriting style is close to the seal script that was prevalent in the Qin dynasty (221–206 bce). Second, I have incorporated the recent archaeological discovery of Laozi-related documents, disentombed in 1993 in Jishan District’s tomb complex in the village of Guodian, near the city of Jingmen, Hubei Province of China. These documents include three bundles of bamboo slips written in the Chu script and contain passages related to the extant Laozi.3 Third, I have made extensive use of old commentaries on Laozi to provide the most comprehensive interpretations possible of each passage. Finally, I have examined myriad Chinese classic texts that are closely associated with the formation of Laozi, such as Zhuangzi, Lüshi Chunqiu (Spring and Autumn Annals of Mr. Lü), Han Feizi, and Huainanzi, to understand the intellectual and historical context of Laozi’s ideas. In addition to these characteristics, this book introduces several new interpretations of Laozi. -

This article argues for the understanding of ‘utopia’ as a cultural marker whose appearance in history is functional to the a posteriori chronologization (or typification) of historical time. I develop this argument via a comparative analysis of utopia between China and Europe. Utopia is a marker of modernity: the coinage of the word wutuobang (‘utopia’) in Chinese around is analogous and complementary to More’s invention of Utopia in ,inthatbothrepresent attempts at the conceptualizations of displaced imaginaries, encounters with radical forms of otherness – the European ‘discovery’ of the ‘New World’ during the Renaissance on the one hand, and early modern China’sown‘Westphalian’ refashioning on the other. In fact, a steady stream of utopian con- jecturing seems to mark the latter: from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom borne out of the Opium wars, via the utopian tendencies of late Qing fiction in the works of literati such as Li Ruzhen, Biheguan Zhuren, Lu Shi’e, Wu Jianren, Xiaoran Yusheng, and Xu Zhiyan, to the reformer Kang Youwei’s monumental treatise Datong shu. -
The Book of Documents
The Book of Documents Translation by James Legge (1923); Notes by Chris Heselton The Book of Documents is an ancient compiled collection of various historical legends of Chinese antiquity from mythical foundations to the Zhou dynasty. The original title of the collection was simply “the Documents” – as in THE documents - but were later called the “the Esteemed Documents” or “the Classic Documents” to be more clear as the word “document” over time came to mean the word “book”. In English, it has come to be known as “the Book of Documents,” “the Classic of History,” and sometimes “The Book of Kings.” The Book of Documents is broken into several “Books” or volumes, with several chapters or “Scrolls” that range in topic from chronologies, geographies, and stories about the rulers of the distant past. Traditionally, the Book of Documents is believed to be a collation of ancient text compiled by the philosopher Confucius (551-479 BCE), but historians and philologist are dubious of such claims. Nonetheless, it is well established that the Book of Documents was compiled and well-known by the 4th century BCE through contemporary references and citation. The version we have today is possibly not a reliable copy of the original. With the “Burning of the Books and Burying of the Scholars” in the late 3rd century BCE, many such text were lost. In the Han dynasty, Confucian scholars emerged with two versions: One reconstructed from memory by Fu Sheng called the “New Text” and another found in the wall of Confucius’ descendants called the “Old Text.” These two versions have many contradictions and additional/missing chapters. -

The “Masters” in the Shiji
T’OUNG PAO T’oungThe “Masters” Pao 101-4-5 in (2015) the Shiji 335-362 www.brill.com/tpao 335 The “Masters” in the Shiji Martin Kern (Princeton University) Abstract The intellectual history of the ancient philosophical “Masters” depends to a large extent on accounts in early historiography, most importantly Sima Qian’s Shiji which provides a range of longer and shorter biographies of Warring States thinkers. Yet the ways in which personal life experiences, ideas, and the creation of texts are interwoven in these accounts are diverse and uneven and do not add up to a reliable guide to early Chinese thought and its protagonists. In its selective approach to different thinkers, the Shiji under-represents significant parts of the textual heritage while developing several distinctive models of authorship, from anonymous compilations of textual repertoires to the experience of personal hardship and political frustration as the precondition for turning into a writer. Résumé L’histoire intellectuelle des “maîtres” de la philosophie chinoise ancienne dépend pour une large part de ce qui est dit d’eux dans l’historiographie ancienne, tout particulièrement le Shiji de Sima Qian, qui offre une série de biographies plus ou moins étendues de penseurs de l’époque des Royaumes Combattants. Cependant leur vie, leurs idées et les conditions de création de leurs textes se combinent dans ces biographies de façon très inégale, si bien que l’ensemble ne saurait être considéré comme l’équivalent d’un guide de la pensée chinoise ancienne et de ses auteurs sur lequel on pourrait s’appuyer en toute confiance. -

Model Legal and Administrative Forms from the Qin, Han, and Tang and their Role in the Facilitation of Bureaucracy and Literacy Anthony Barbieri-Low (Santa Barbara, Ca.) Abstract This paper examines model forms from several periods and compares their structure to ac- tual documents in the same genre. Some of the types considered include interrogation and investigation documents, registers of sick conscripts, official accusations, and last wills. I ar- gue that the model forms from the Qin and Han were closely followed, with some minor adjustments, but that Tang model legal forms often bear little resemblance to functioning documents that survive. Model forms were important because they enabled the military and civilian bureaucracies to function more efficiently and facilitated literacy among scribes-in- training by serving as “school texts.” Any complex bureaucracy relies heavily on forms, standardized genres of written communica- tion suitable to different legal, administrative, or military functions. The very notion of a bu- reaucracy requires that the duties of each official be rationalized, and that communication be- tween officials be standardized. Innovative written expression is discouraged, because it slows down processing and creates exceptions that are difficult for an impersonal administration to handle. Bureaucratic forms have some strong advantages. They allow a semi-literate clerk to accomplish his duties without obtaining the advanced literacy of a master scribe, and they allow the government to compile useful information quickly, from widely scattered areas. The Qin and Han empires were the first truly bureaucratic, territorial states in the world and set the model for the later Chinese dynasties that would follow.
