CHOOSING a BIBLE TRANSLATION Reading, Studying and Praying

CHOOSING A BIBLE TRANSLATION Reading, studying and praying through the Bible are an essential part of the Christian faith. The Bible teaches us about who God is; the purpose of human life; and how we should live in relation to God, to other people and to the created world. But more than just a source of information, beliefs, and practices, when we read the Bible with faith it becomes one of the key places where we encounter God. Indeed, when we pray for God’s Spirit to bring the ancient words alive, we are promised an encounter with God’s living Word – Jesus himself. All of this makes choosing which Bible translation to use an important decision. The two main things that go into this decision is how faithful it is to the original Hebrew and Greek Biblical manuscripts (so it will communicate what the Bible really says), and whether it’s easy to understand and enjoyable to read (so that you’ll actually want to read it). Picking a good translation means balancing the two – some translations focus on being as literal as possible (word-for-word), while others focus on taking the ideas spoken in the ancient languages and putting them into easily understandable modern English (thought-for-thought). Below I’ve listed four translations which are among the most common ones used today. NRSV (New Revised Standard Version) The NRSV is a mainly word- for-word translation of the Bible that is the most commonly used translation in university level Biblical studies. One of its distinctive features are the fact that it was translated by a group of scholars that included Protestant, Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christians, which makes it largely free of bias towards any one Christian tradition.

Bible Translations: the Link Between Exegesis and Expository Preaching1

BIBLE TRANSLATIONS: THE LINK BETWEEN EXEGESIS AND EXPOSITORY PREACHING1 Robert L. Thomas Professor of New Testament Language and Literature The Master's Seminary Expository preaching presupposes the goal of teaching an audience the meaning of the passage on which the sermon is based. Two types of Bible translations are available as "textbooks" the preacher may use in accomplishing this task. One type follows the original languages of Scripture inform and vocabulary insofar as possible without doing violence to English usage. The other type is not so much governed by phraseology in the original languages, but accommodates itself to contemporary usage of the language into which the translation is made. It is possible with a fair degree of objectivity to measure how far each translation deviates from the original languages. The greater degree of deviation inevitably reflects a higher proportion of interpretation on the translator's part. Regardless of the accuracy of the interpretation, the preacher will at times disagree with it and have to devote valuable sermon time to correcting the text. The best choice of translations on which to base expository preaching is, therefore, one which more literally follows the original languages and excludes as much human interpretation as possible. * * * * * English versions of the Bible can be classified in different ways. They can be classified in regard to historical origin, in regard to textual basis, in regard to theological bias, and in regard to usage of the English language. These areas of consideration are not without rele vance to exegesis and expository preaching, but for purposes of the current study, a fifth classification will be examined, that of the ^is essay was originally presented at the Thirty-fifth Annual Meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society in Dallas, TX, in December 1983 and has been updated for incorporation in this issue of The Master's Seminary Journal.

English Bible Translations: Making Some Sense of the Possibilities by Bob Young

English Bible Translations: Making Some Sense of the Possibilities By Bob Young Recently, I was asked to write something about available English Bible translations. It is not possible to say something about every available English translation, so I will comment on the most popular translations. Because I recently received a question about the Lexham English Bible (LEB), I will also comment briefly on that work. Today a vast number of different translations (versions) of the Bible are available, many electronically. One who is serious about reading and studying the Bible has more resources available than ever to make a good, informed decision about what translations to use. While it may be true that one can read almost any translation to learn what to do to go to heaven, that does not mean that all translations are created equal or are of equal value or accuracy. I recognize that one may wish to read from different versions to grow in one’s knowledge of the Word. I try to read the Bible—at least the New Testament—from a different version each year. Nevertheless, it is generally best to choose one Bible for serious Bible reading and study. What Bible should that be? For preachers, the ideal is to work with the original language texts. That means Hebrew for the Old Testament and Greek for the New Testament. I am increasingly concerned about the number of quotations I hear in sermons from various English versions. I am concerned because in some cases the quotation from a popular version does not reflect the true teaching of the passage cited.

The New King James Bible: Counterfeit http://www.av1611.org/nkjv.html by Terry Watkins coun ter feit \'kaunt-er-fit\: to imitate or copy closely especially with intent to deceive . The greatest method of deception is to counterfeit. And the master of counterfeit and deception is Satan. The Bible in 2 Corinthians 11:14-15 warns of Satan's counterfeit: "And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness;. ." Isaiah 14: 14 tells of Satan's ultimate counterfeit: ". I will BE LIKE the most High." And among his greatest counterfeit's is the New King James Bible (NKJV). Christians that would never touch a New International Version (NIV), New American Standard (NASV), Revised Standard (RSV), the New Revised Standard (NRSV) or other per -versions are being "seduced" by the subtil NKJV. And though the New King James does indeed bear a "likeness" to the 1611 King James Bible, as you'll soon see, there's something else coiled (see Genesis 3:1) "underneath the cover" of the NKJV. WHAT ABOUT THAT MYSTERIOUS MARK? Symbols are used throughout the occult. Harpers' Encyclopedia of Mystical & Paranormal Experience (p.594) says, "Symbols are important to all esoteric teachings, for they contain secret wisdom accessible only to the initiated." The New King James Version and the Song of Solomon

Issue Number: 578 – January to March 2007 THE NEW KING JAMES VERSION AND THE An evaluation of the modern approach to the Song of Solomon in the New King James Version by the Rev. G. Hamstra A Vice-President of the Society he Song of Solomon is a most excellent song; it is superior to and excels all other songs. This is clearly expressed in the title of the song contained in its first verse: ‘The song of songs, which is Solomon’s’. The phrase ‘song of songs’ is a Hebrew way of stating that the Song has been compared to and preferred above every other composition similar in nature. The human author, Solomon, was not only a wise king and ruler, he also excelled as a judge and counsellor, as an architect and builder, as a botanist and zoologist, and especially as an author and poet. The secret of his wisdom was a life in close communion with the Lord. The Song is highly figurative and poetical; the linguistic beauty of its original Hebrew is unsurpassed. This book, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, is an eminent portray- al of the most precious heavenly love and the unfailing, constant care of Christ, the heavenly Bridegroom, for His Church, His earthly bride, and likewise, of the responsive and ardent love of the Church for Christ. This latter love is a fruit of the former. The fountain of all love to Christ is His love to His people. The blessed fruit of His compassionate love is a hum- ble and fervent love for Him.

  • 1 Is the 1611 King James Version the Only Correct Translation?

1 Is the 1611 King James Version the Only Correct Translation?

1 Is the 1611 King James Version the Only Correct Translation? The Bible is God’s inerrant Word. “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness” (2 Tim. 3:16). The Holy Spirit supernaturally inspired the prophets to record God’s words in the original manuscripts. These manuscripts were copied over the centuries and we no longer have the original documents. The KJV is not the original Word of God but is a translation of the copies they had available in 1611. Some people believe the 1611 King James Version (KJV) is the only true Bible because they believe it is an inspired translation, although there’s no proof for this. This theory is called King James Only (KJO) and teaches that all other Bible versions are corrupt. (Was there a Bible before 1611?) I don’t have a problem if a brother or sister in Christ prefers to read the KJV—if they can understand it. I do have a problem if someone tells me that I’m a heretic if I read other Bible versions. I have a very difficult time reading and understanding the outdated language of the KJV. Today, we don’t use the words “thee” “thou” “ye” “goest” ‘whiter” “wilt” “verily” “hath” “cometh” “saith” “howbeit” and many other words. If it’s hard for the average person who knows nothing about the Bible to understand the KJV. It’s for this reason that Bible scholars have translated newer versions of the Bible using words people can understand.
