This extremely busy road for vehicles heading north and for junction 10A of M23 is clearly breaking up all around and needs a far larger patch than keeps being applied. I just witnessed several cars hitting this even in daylight because it is on a downward slope and usually drivers are applying brakes for the roundabout ahead and not paying as much attention to road surface but the traffic coming off M23 at the roundabout. The problem with this pothole at this stage and that makes it so damaging to vevicles tracking and rims is that a half of the tarmacadam from previous lightweight repair has come out and left a vertical wall about 6-inches down to hardcore and the thud I got last night was teeth shattering. I knew then I had smashed down a pothole firstly believing that my suspension had been damaged but very quickly realising that I had blown out my tyre. I limped along to the Cowdray Arms carpark as it was too dangerous to just pull over with no layby on a busy, unlit road. I then realised that the carpark already had other cars in it that had equally burst a tyre on the pothole. I immediately phoned highways to report the incident to try and stop any others coming to the same fate. The lady I spoke to at 16.32 for 13 mins 56 seconds, after locating the incident, said that it had already been reported multiple of times and I said that it needed to be prioritised as at least 10 cars, by that stage, had already been damaged. She was desperately trying to do so but for whatever reason seemed unable to escalate the incident. My partner then changed our front near side tyre, which had just been replaced on the 13/11/19 with full tracking carried out, with our spare. Once fixed, which took a time, we then drove back up the Balcombe road towards the M23 then back round again in the direction of Cuckfield to take photos of the hole. We were completely shocked at the number of cars that this hole had caused damage to and when we had stopped we knew that the pothole had been reported to or known to Highways as there was a white spray mark round it. The pothole was enormous and had no way deteriorated in a short period of time but had been allowed to get worse to the extent that it was around inches deep and at least 2 feet wide and 3 feet long. Its a disgrace and someone, especially a motorcyclist or cyclist could have been killed. Immediately I got a warning on my dashboard to say the front passenger tyre was punctured. I pulled over to a safe place to inspect the damage and the tyre was completely flat. It was obvious that I had driven over a large pothole. I put my hazards on and drove slowly and safely a short distance further south and pulled into the car park of The Cowdray Arms. Upon arrival in the car park there were approximately 6 other drivers in the car park, also with flat tyres. I spoke to them and they had all hit the same pothole. My car does not have a spare tyre fitted so I was unable to replace it to continue my journey. A short while later a local mobile tyre company (More Than Tyres Limited - Haywards Heath) arrived in the car park to assist another driver and I asked if he was able to look at my tyre. He agreed and advised the tyre was beyond repair and had to be replaced. I asked if he would be able to replace my tyre with the cheapest one available to fit my car. He agreed and after finishing assisting the other driver, he returned to his depot to collect the tyre. He then came back, fitted the tyre and I had to pay ??170.00 (receipt attached). While my repair was being carried out the arrived as one of the other drivers had reported the incident. The lady constable gave me an incident card and a reference number and mentioned there had been 25 similar incidents reported that afternoon / evening with the same pothole. She also mentioned in the time since my incident happened, the council had been out to mend the pothole. Once my tyre was replaced I was able to continue my journey home, this was around 7pm. Plot Number: .00 Feature Id - Location: Feature Type: Enquiry No.: Logged by: Tracie Blissett on: 20/01/2020 13:26 Officer: Clive Buckler(MID)[JB] Service: Carriageway Subject: Potholes Classification: Request for service Desc.: On 26th December 2019 I was traveling from Hayward’s heath to Watford to take my girlfriend home in the evening and on the B2036 just before the roundabout before coming onto the m23 where the delta force paintball south London is, I hit a massive pothole which I couldn’t see as it was raining. And as I came onto the m23 about a mile down the motorway my tyre pressure light came on and I pulled over at the Tesco fuel station not far from it and my tyre was completely flat. I had to put a space saver on and drive all the way back to my home address in Littlehampton as it wasn’t safe to drive it all the way back up to Watford. The next day I took my tire off and noticed not only had the pothole popped the tire but it also cracked my alloy. The road is not a safe place to stop to take pictures at the time and I have not been back up there to attempt to. Am I entitled to claiming any compensation for the damage to my alloy and tire?
