RESEARCH GUIDE Cemetery Records Research Guide 5: Cemetery Records CONTENTS Introduction Main cemetery records held at LMA Bunhill Fields (CLC/271) New Bunhill Fields, Islington (B/NBF) The City of London Cemetery, Little Ilford (CLA/052) The City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery (CTHC) Other cemetery records at LMA Indexes and Transcripts in the LMA Library Records held elsewhere Introduction Before the mid-19th century most burials in London took place in churchyards and from the mid-16th century were recorded in parish registers. Some hospitals and other institutions had their own burial grounds. From the time of the Black Death special burial grounds outside the City walls were provided for people who died from the periodic epidemics of plague which afflicted London. Land to the north of the Artillery Ground known as Bunhill Fields was set aside in 1665 as a plague burial ground, but was not used for this purpose. It then became a burial ground for nonconformists. After 1690 many nonconformist meeting houses and chapels were established in London some of which had their own burial grounds. By the late 18th century the London churchyards were becoming overcrowded. New cemeteries were established as private speculations generally offering slightly lower charges for burials than the churchyards. Some of these burial grounds were originally connected to chapels adjoining them, but were subsequently bought by private individuals. By 1835 there were at least fourteen such burial grounds in London including Spa Fields, Clerkenwell, opposite London Metropolitan Archives (LMA) where about 80, 000 people were buried. An enquiry in 1843 discovered that about 40 burials were taking place each day.

  • London and Middlesex in the 1660S Introduction: the Early Modern
London and Middlesex in the 1660s Introduction: The early modern metropolis first comes into sharp visual focus in the middle of the seventeenth century, for a number of reasons. Most obviously this is the period when Wenceslas Hollar was depicting the capital and its inhabitants, with views of Covent Garden, the Royal Exchange, London women, his great panoramic view from Milbank to Greenwich, and his vignettes of palaces and country-houses in the environs. His oblique birds-eye map- view of Drury Lane and Covent Garden around 1660 offers an extraordinary level of detail of the streetscape and architectural texture of the area, from great mansions to modest cottages, while the map of the burnt city he issued shortly after the Fire of 1666 preserves a record of the medieval street-plan, dotted with churches and public buildings, as well as giving a glimpse of the unburned areas.1 Although the Fire destroyed most of the historic core of London, the need to rebuild the burnt city generated numerous surveys, plans, and written accounts of individual properties, and stimulated the production of a new and large-scale map of the city in 1676.2 Late-seventeenth-century maps of London included more of the spreading suburbs, east and west, while outer Middlesex was covered in rather less detail by county maps such as that of 1667, published by Richard Blome [Fig. 5]. In addition to the visual representations of mid-seventeenth-century London, a wider range of documentary sources for the city and its people becomes available to the historian.

Queen of Hoxton Pro Sound News Europe online FEBRUARY 2011 - Shoreditch On the whole, 2010 could be looked at as a pretty torrid time to be a self-contained music venue in the capital. The future remains uncertain to say the least for its legendary 100 Club; and at the back end of last year, The Luminaire shut its doors for the last time. But it’s not all doom and gloom, apparently. One venue that has kept London’s live music flag flying – well, at half mast, at least - is the Queen of Hoxton – which, actually, is located on Curtain Road in Shoreditch, and has been subject to a major audio overhaul. The venue opened two years ago, but things really started to take off in Summer 2010 when Roots Manuva was first to perform through the 200-capacity venue’s newly installed Funktion-One PA system. Since then, it has accommodated an array of popular bands and DJs including The Maccabees, Rob da Bank and Mat Horne; and a massive show from The Drums at the end of last year. “The response from artists about the new sound system has been phenomenal,” says the Queen’s Danny Payne, “Word has spread, and it’s been integral in attracting bigger acts to play at the venue.” The Funktion-One installation was undertaken by London headquartered Sound Services Ltd, and the main rig consists of a pair of Res 2s and a pair of F-218 subwoofers, along with FFA amplification and Funktion-One- badged XTA processing. Along with its state-of-the-art PA system, the venue now boasts a state-of-the-art Green Room as well, which is a dedicated area located at back-of-house with private dressing rooms and make-up facilities, an all important mini-bar, and a live video link to the main stage that can accommodate up to twenty people in privacy..

PNCR Network for SMA March 7th Expanded Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale for SMA (HFMSE) 2009 Add-on module presented by PNCR - Expanded Hammersmith Functional Smartnet Motor Scale (HFMSE) &PNCR Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale for SMA (HFMS) With add-on module presented by PNCR - Expanded Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale (HFMSE) Introduction to this collaboration In the UK physiotherapists involved in Smartnet (neuromuscular network aimed at improving the management of individuals with SMA) have been working on establishing a written manual for the Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale (HFMS) which has been shown to successfully assess the ability of non-ambulant individuals with SMA. At the same time, yet independently, in the U.S. the Pediatric Neuromuscular Clinical Research Group (PNCR) has been aiming to achieve the same thing for their Expanded version of the Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale (HFMSE) which combines the original HMFS with an add-on module, consisting of items adapted from the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM). The 13 add-on items were selected based on their ability to distinguish motor skills among individuals with SMA II and III and has been shown to do this successfully. This manual provides proforma’s and a detailed manual on operating procedures for both the HFMS and the HFMSE. This is in an effort to reduce fragmentation and promote harmonisation across the international community. Notes on Testing Procedure 1. Intended Population The HFMS is intended to be used with the non-ambulant SMA population and this manual clarifies the procedures. 2. Motor Scale Evaluators HFMS assessments should be performed by individuals who have experience in the handling of children and adults with SMA, such as physical or occupational therapists.
