The Children of San Souci, Dessalines/Toussaint, and Pétion
The Children of San Souci, Dessalines/Toussaint, and Pétion by Paul C. Mocombe [email protected] West Virginia State University The Mocombeian Foundation, Inc. Abstract This work, using a structurationist, structural Marxist understanding of consciousness constitution, i.e., phenomenological structuralism, explores the origins of the contemporary Haitian oppositional protest cry, “the children of Pétion v. the children of Dessalines.” Although viewed within racial terms in regards to the ideological position of Pétion representing the neoliberal views of the mulatto elites, and economic reform and social justice representing the ideological position of Dessalines as articulated by the African masses, this article suggests that the metaphors, contemporarily, have come to represent Marxist categories for class struggle on the island of Haiti within the capitalist world-system under American hegemony at the expense of the African majority, i.e., the Children of Sans Souci. Keywords: African-Americanization, Vodou Ethic and the Spirit of Communism, Religiosity, Black Diaspora, Dialectical, Anti-dialectical, Phenomenological Structuralism Introduction Since 1986 with the topple of the Haitian dictator, Jean-Claude “Baby-Doc” Duvalier (1951-2014), whose family ruled Haiti for almost thirty-years, the rallying cry of Haitian protest movements against dictatorship and American neoliberal policies on the island has been, “the children of Dessalines are fighting or stand against the children of Pétion.” The politically charged moniker is an allusion to the continuous struggles over control of the Haitian nation- state and its ideological apparatuses between the Africans who are deemed the descendants of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the father of the Haitian nation-state; and the mulatto elites (and more recently the Syrian class) who are deemed heirs of the mulatto first President of the Haitian Republic, Alexandre Pétion. -

Xenophilia as a Cultural Trap: Bridging the Gap Between Transpersonal Psychology and Religious/Spiritual Traditions Harris Friedman1 Walden University Minneapolis, MN, USA Xenophilia, seen as a type of romanticism, is proposed as an explanation for the tendency within transpersonal psychology to privilege so-called exotic religious and spiritual tradi- tions, as opposed to the xenophobic tendency within mainstream Western psychology of religion and spirituality to privilege the Judeo-Christian tradition. Claims made in a recent article published in a major psychology journal that Buddhism does not rest on supernatural faith and is the most psychological spiritual tradition are challenged as examples of this type of romanticism. -

COMPASSION AND CRITIQUE Angela P. Harris* INTRODUCTION Where does compassion begin? Perhaps with the experience of caring. Caring happens in the body and in the moment: a quick squirt of oxytocin, a firing of mirror neurons, the sudden perception of a link between the so- called self and the so-called other. Caring is unpredictable and unwilled, a reaction, an eruption along the shifting surfaces between you and not-you, suddenly experienced in the “flinching of an eye.” Kathleen Stewart describes an observer’s emotional reaction to the pain of another: The young miner who showed me the mine put out every cigarette he smoked on his hand, which was covered with scar tissue. Then I saw the other young miners all had the backs of their hands covered with scar tissue . when my eye fell on them it flinched, seeing the burning cigarette being crushed and sensing the pain . The eye does not read the meaning in a sign; it jumps from the mark to the pain and the burning cigarette, and then jumps to the fraternity signaled by * Professor of Law, University of California—Davis (King Hall). Although the participants in this Symposium were instructed to reflect on race and Marxism, I found myself reflecting instead on the work of the Symposium’s organizer, Anthony Paul Farley. His classic treatment of the pleasures of anti-black racism, The Black Body as Fetish-Object, 76 OR. L. REV. 457 (1997), continues to instruct all who read it, and his writing and speaking—laced always with compassion and outrage—reminds me to watch out and take care. -
Haiti Unbound a Spiralist Challenge to the Postcolonial Canon H
HAITI UNBOUND A SPIRALIST CHALLENGE TO THE POSTCOLONIAL CANON H Both politically and in the fields of art and literature, Haiti has long been relegated to the margins of the so-called ‘New World’. Marked by exceptionalism, the voices of some of its AITI most important writers have consequently been muted by the geopolitical realities of the nation’s fraught history. In Haiti Unbound, Kaiama L. Glover offers a close look at the works of three such writers: the Haitian Spiralists Frankétienne, Jean-Claude Fignolé, and René Philoctète. While Spiralism has been acknowledged by scholars and regional writer- intellectuals alike as a crucial contribution to the French-speaking Caribbean literary tradition, the Spiralist ethic-aesthetic has not yet been given the sustained attention of a full-length U study. Glover’s book represents the first effort in any language to consider the works of the three Spiralist authors both individually and collectively, and so fills an astonishingly empty NBO place in the assessment of postcolonial Caribbean aesthetics. Touching on the role and destiny of Haiti in the Americas, Haiti Unbound engages with long- standing issues of imperialism and resistance culture in the transatlantic world. Glover’s timely project emphatically articulates Haiti’s regional and global centrality, combining vital ‘big picture’ reflections on the field of postcolonial studies with elegant analyses of the U philosophical perspective and creative practice of a distinctively Haitian literary phenomenon. Most importantly, perhaps, the book advocates for the inclusion of three largely unrecognized ND voices in the disturbingly fixed roster of writer-intellectuals who have thus far interested theorists of postcolonial (francophone) literature. -

2012 Conference Abstracts (in order of presentation) Thursday afternoon Session 1a: Mapping Musical Modernities at the BBC (3rd Floor) Vaughan Williams, Boult and the BBC JENNY DOCTOR, SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY Much scholarly discussion in recent years has focused on re-mapping notions of biography, exploring in music not only composers, performers and librettists, but also patrons, concert organizers and programme builders. In parallel with this emerged new ideas of institutional biography, opening up questions that contextualized the institution in terms of its cultural role. With such expanded impressions of biography, identity and contribution in mind, I explore Ralph Vaughan Williams and the BBC, considering the composer’s broadcasting activities and opportunities in relation to his Corporation contacts, in particular his interactions with BBC Music Director and Chief Conductor Adrian Boult. “The Best Possible Performance”: The BBC’s 1942 Music Policy and the Problem of Swung Classics CHRISTINA BAADE, MCMASTER UNIVERSITY This paper examines the BBC’s 1942 ban on swung classics, locating it at the nexus of three strands of British cultural expression during the Second World War: 1. the vogue for Russian (and Soviet) culture; 2. the expansion of American-style popular music in Britain; and 3. the development of People’s War discourses of democracy, populism, and tolerance. This paper argues that the ban represented a direct attempt to combat the commoditization of music and to develop a more musical citizenry. Devido a muitas controvérsias legais, práticas e éticas o estudo da violência religiosa contemporânea está em sua infância. Não houve nenhum estudo empírico sério dos crimes ou das classificações ritualísticas que distingam adequadamente entre os homicídios rituais cometidos para sagrado versus motivações temporais. Este artigo é o resultado de minha pesquisa na fenomenologia da adoração da imagem, de rituais contemporâneos do sangue, e da violência sagrada. Reflete meu esforço contínuo para proteger as liberdades religiosas de membros de religiões alternativas ao ajudar profissionais da lei de lei na investigação de crimes ritualísticos. Abstract : Ritual murder includes a wide variety of both sacred and secular acts committed by groups and individuals and is most often attributed to practitioners of occult ideologies such as Satanism, Palo Mayombe, Santeria, and other magical traditions, or to serial killers and sexual sadists who ritually murder their victims. Due to many legal, practical, and ethical controversies the study of contemporary religious violence is in its infancy. There have been no serious empirical studies of ritualistic crimes or classifications that adequately distinguish between ritual homicides committed for sacred versus secular motivations.
