  • Redescription of Eudontomyzon Stankokaramani (Petromyzontes, Petromyzontidae) – a Little Known Lamprey from the Drin River Drainage, Adriatic Sea Basin
Folia Zool. – 53(4): 399–410 (2004) Redescription of Eudontomyzon stankokaramani (Petromyzontes, Petromyzontidae) – a little known lamprey from the Drin River drainage, Adriatic Sea basin Juraj HOLČÍK1 and Vitko ŠORIĆ2 1 Department of Ecosozology, Institute of Zoology, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Dúbravská cesta 9, 845 06 Bratislava, Slovak Republic; e-mail: [email protected] 2 Faculty of Science, University of Kragujevac, R.Domanovića 12, 34000 Kragujevac, Serbia and Montenegro; e-mail: [email protected] Received 28 May 2004; Accepted 24 November 2004 A b s t r a c t . Nonparasitic lamprey found in the Beli Drim River basin (Drin River drainage, Adriatic Sea watershed) represents a valid species Eudontomyzon stankokaramani Karaman, 1974. From other species of the genus Eudontomyzon it differs in its dentition, and the number and form of velar tentacles. This is the first Eudontomyzon species found in the Adriatic Sea watershed. Key words: Eudontomyzon stankokaramani, Beli Drim River basin, Drin River drainage, Adriatic Sea watershed, West Balkan, Serbia Introduction Eudontomyzon is one of five genera that belong to the family Petromyzontidae occurring in the Palaearctic faunal region. Within this region the genus is composed of one parasitic and two non-parasitic species. According to recent knowledge, Europe is inhabited by E. danfordi Regan, 1911, E. mariae (Berg, 1931), E. hellenicus Vladykov, Renaud, Kott et Economidis, 1982, and also by a still unnamed but now probably extinct species of anadromous parasitic lamprey related to E. mariae known from the Prut, Dnieper and Dniester Rivers (H o l č í k & R e n a u d 1986, R e n a u d 1997).

  • Treating Two 18Th Century Maps of the Danube in Association with Google-Provided Imagery
ON THE DIGITAL REVIVAL OF HISTORIC CARTOGRAPHY: TREATING TWO 18TH CENTURY MAPS OF THE DANUBE IN ASSOCIATION WITH GOOGLE-PROVIDED IMAGERY Evangelos Livieratos Angeliki Tsorlini Maria Pazarli [email protected] Chrysoula Boutoura Myron Myridis Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Faculty of Surveying Engineering University Campus, Box 497 GRE - 541 24 Thessaloniki, Greece Abstract The great navigable Danube River (known as the Istros River to the Ancient Greeks and as one of the crucial ends of the Roman Empire northern territories) is an emblematic fluvial feature of the overall European historic and cultural heritage in the large. Originating in the German Black Forest as two small rivers (Brigach and Breg) converging at the town of Donaueschingen, Danube is flowing for almost 2850 km mainly eastwards, passing through ten states (Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine) and four European capitals (Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade) with embouchure in the west coasts of the Black Sea via the Danube Delta, mainly in Romania. Danube played a profound role in the European political, social, economic and cultural history influencing in a multifold manner the heritage of many European nations, some of those without even a physical connection with the River, as it is the case of the Greeks, to whom the Danube is a reference to their own 18th century Enlightenment movement. Due to Danube’s important role in History, the extensive emphasis to its cartographic depiction was obviously a conditio sine qua non especially in the 17th and 18th century European cartography. In this paper, taking advantage of the modern digital technologies as applied in the recently established domain of cartographic heritage, two important and historically significant 18th century maps of the Danube are comparatively discussed in view also to the reference possibilities available today in relevant studies by the digital maps offered by powerful providers as e.g.

We have shown such temporal changes in two severely modified reaches of the gravel-bed river Sava, the largest river in Slovenia (11,735 km2). The Ljubljanska Sava has significantly changed since the 19th century until today and this is largely due to long-term regulation of its channel, and later due to construction of hydroelectric power stations upstream of this section. The Lower Sava River, downstream of the confluence with the Savinja River, is severely modified due to regulation works and in the last years due to hydro power plants, in the reach at the Nuclear Power Plant Krško also due to the Krško weir. This study contributes to the understanding of fluvial processes when assessing the Sava River sediment budget, especially at the cross section with the Republic of Croatia.

Apart from its indispensable role in everyday life, its long-term impact on society and the environment increasingly calls for attention. Functional, quality and professional transport management determines the development path both of the region and the State. Hence the project ‘Expert guidelines for the regulation of regional public transport’ is an excellent foundation for the regulation and establishment of quality public passenger transport on the principles of sustainable mobility by 2027. At the Municipality of Ljubljana we have set out a long-term programme for public transport and designed activities needed for its implementation. What are the most important projects through which we wish to achieve greater efficiency and safety in public transport, and the use of alternative fuels, as well as encourage cycling and walking? · By closing the city centre to traffic, newly re-designed public spaces such as Prešeren Square (Prešernov trg) and the Three Bridges (Tromostovje), Ciril-Metod Square (Ciril Metodov trg), Breg, Krakovo Embankment (Krakovski nasip), Špica and Trnovo Quay (Trnovski pristan) are intended for pedestrians and cyclists.
