Twenty-three poultry houses from five areas in the southern part ofNorway were sampled for insects associated with manure. The farms belong to five different poultry production categories. Species from the orders Coleoptera, Diptera, Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera were trapped using Tullgren funnels. Among the Diptera, Sphaeroceridae and Psychodidae were dominating, while Carcinops pumilio was the most abundant Coleoptera species. Measurements of manure depth, temperature, and moisture content were performed. The production categories showed significant differences in the abiotic measurements. Cage-layer houses had small amounts of moist manure. Broiler houses type 1 and type 2 had small amounts of dry manure, while deep-pit and breeder houses had large amounts of manure with high and medium moisture contents respectively. The manure amounts were related to length of time in production. Distribution and abundance of the various taxa were analysed using reciprocal averaging (RA). Differences in the fauna between the production catego­ ries were observed. Houses with long accumulation periods contained Coleoptera and Lepidoptera species, while houses with shorter accumulation periods, mainly contained Diptera species. The most important factor affecting the insect fauna was found to be the length oftime ofmanure accumu­ lation, but indications of influence from the manure moisture content and the temperature on the faunal composition in poultry houses were also detected. Tineidae, Acrolepiidae, Epermeniidae With 127 figures Reinhard Gaedike and Ole Karsholt Summary A review of three families Tineidae, Epermeniidae and Acrolepiidae in the Madeira Islands is given. Three new species: Monopis henderickxi sp. n. (Tineidae), Acrolepiopsis mauli sp. n. and A. infundibulosa sp. n. (Acrolepiidae) are described, and two new combinations in the Tineidae: Ceratobia oxymora (MEYRICK) comb. n. and Monopis barbarosi (KOÇAK) comb. n. are listed. Trichophaga robinsoni nom. n. is proposed as a replacement name for the preoccupied T. abrkptella (WOLLASTON, 1858). The first record from Madeira of the family Acrolepiidae (with Acrolepiopsis vesperella (ZELLER) and the two above mentioned new species) is presented, and three species of Tineidae: Stenoptinea yaneimarmorella (MILLIÈRE), Ceratobia oxymora (MEY­ RICK) and Trichophaga tapetgella (LINNAEUS) are reported as new to the fauna of Madeira. The Madeiran records given for Tsychoidesfilicivora (MEYRICK) are the first records of this species outside the British Isles. Tineapellionella LINNAEUS, Monopis laevigella (DENIS & SCHIFFERMULLER) and M. imella (HÜBNER) are dele­ ted from the list of Lepidoptera found in Madeira. All species and their genitalia are figured, and informa­ tion on bionomy is presented. BOESEL Zoology Department, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio 45056 ABSTRACT The larva of Ablabesmyia annulata is remarkably similar to Malloch's Tanypus sp. A, briefly described in 1915. It differs from other American species in the following char- acteristics: 3 inner teeth of lingua truncate, all claws of posterior prolegs yellow, and both anterior and posterior prolegs apically and densely armed with spinules. In the pupa, the respiratory organ is smooth and ovate, lacking a terminal papilla. The respir- tory opening is distinctly preapical. The species is widely distributed in Ohio. INTRODUCTION This study was initiated when larvae bearing a similarity to Tanypus sp. A of Malloch (1915) were collected by Randy Kingsley near Oxford. One of these larvae was carried to adulthood and found to be Ablabesmyia annulata (Say). The species was also reared 12 times previously at Put-in-Bay, Ohio. At the time when the Put-in-Bay material was collected, there was still some confusion about the identity of A. annulata and A. monilis. Ablabesmyia monilis was described by Linnaeus in 1758 (as Tipula monilis) from the Old World, but has been widely reported from the Nearctic region. The first American species of the genus as now constituted was A. annulata, described by Say (1823) (as Tanypus annulatus) from Pennsylvania. Johannscn, in his monographic work in 1905, regarded T. annulatus as a synonym of A. monilis. Malloch (1915) likewise did not distinguish between the two species.
