We are now accepting registration forms for the 2021-2022 Youth Ministry year! You can access the form HERE or on our website. St. Mark offers the following youth programs:

 Junior Youth Ministry (JYM) for grades 6-8. We use the LifeTeen “Edge” program.  Senior Youth Ministry (SYM) for grades 9-12. Senior Youth Ministry is comprised of Confirmation preparation (typically a two year process beginning in 9th grade) and our post-Confirmation youth group called CrossWalk. We also offer a High School girls peer-led Bible Study and monthly Ladies Nights featuring a topic and fellowship.

YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY

Young Adult Ministry (YAM) is for young adults in their 20’s or 30’s, married or single, with or without kids who are interested in exploring a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ through fellowship and formation in the Catholic Faith.

On the first Tuesday of every month, YAM hosts an event after 6:30pm Mass. Young adults are in- vited to come to Mass and gather afterwards for food, fellowship and fun! The next event is on Tuesday, August 3 at Wrightsville Beach Brewery. Make new connections and learn more about how you can get involved. From small groups to service opportunities, YAM is a great way to grow in your faith and relationships with others.

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time John 6:24-35 The Eyes of Faith So they said to Jesus, “ What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing?” (John 6:20)

Living the Word: In this week’s Gospel, we hear more talk about bread. Jesus tells us we need more than physical nourishment. We need nourishment for our souls to have eternal life.

As a family, reread this Gospel and ask your children what they think the “true bread from heaven” is like. Discuss how Jesus nourishes each member of the family - perhaps everyone might have different answers! You can write these answers down and display them somewhere - perhaps on the refrigerator door or on your prayer space. What do we need in order to do the works of God? Talk about how your family can bring this bread of heaven to others during their week. Talk about the importance of FAITH!

Questions of the Week Child: Who helps you believe in things you cannot see? Adult: When has your faith helped you believe without “seeing signs” from God?

Fun Facts for Catholic Kids: On August 4th, we celebrate the feast day of St. John Vian- ney. He is a French Catholic priest who is venerated in the Catholic Church as a saint and is also the patron saint of parish priests.

His parents were devout Catholics who helped the poor. During his early years because of the French Revolution, many loyal priests had to celebrate the sacraments in hiding. So John Vi- anney received First Communion at the age of 13 in a neighbor’s kitchen with all the windows covered so nothing could be seen from the outside!

He became a priest in 1815. He was known to spend 11 or 12 hours a day in the confessional as many people would travel to consult with him. He also had a great devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to St. Philomena. St. John Vian- ney regarded her as his guardian and made a chapel in her honor. He had become very ill and attributed his cure to her intercession.

So think about what saint you could pick as your guardian. Perhaps St. John Vianney? Celebrate the Sacrament of Rec- onciliation as often as possible in honor of St. John Vianney. And did you know that our Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh has 27 statues, and one of them is of St. John Vianney - so if you are ever at Mass there, go find him!

Reminder about Sacrament Preparation for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist Please remember our Sacrament Preparation is a two-year program. So for those of you who have a rising 1st grader, NOW is the time to register them for our Faith Formation program if they are not students at SMCS. Children must be a program prior to the year they are to re- ceive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. You can find the registration link HERE.

MARK MINISTRY NEWS 24-Hour Adoration: August 6-7 Come and spend some time with our Lord! The Adoration Ministry is hosting a 24-hour adoration from Friday, August 6 to Saturday, August 7. Adoration will begin after the 8:30am Mass on Fri- day and end before the 8:30am First Saturday Mass. Adoration will be in the chapel. Sign-up is not required to attend. St. Mark Meals on Wheels Ministry has a present need for meal delivery volunteers on the first and second Saturdays of each month. Routes in need of coverage may vary. A Message from the Respect Life Ministry: Day of Tears On May 4, the Louisiana legislature passed a resolution recognizing January 22, 2022 (the 49th anniversary of the legali- zation of abortion throughout the U.S.), as a "Day of Tears". Sen. Beth Mizell, who introduced the resolution said, "As a pro-life state, we must continue to bring attention to the loss of innocent lives from abortion yearly. Let us work together to demonstrate that we value life and strive to protect the unborn." Recognizing that some days have special names, such as Memorial Day and Labor Day, this pro-life organization (Day of Tears, Inc.) seeks to name January 22nd the Day of Tears--a day of national mourning for the more than 60+ million innocents who have perished through abortion. Its second goal is to encourage people across the country to fly their flags at half-staff on January 22nd to mourn and hon- or the innocents lost to abortion. Hopefully, the nation will see the flags lowered in mourning, remember the precious innocents and the heart/culture of the nation will be changed. COMMUNITY NEWS Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP): August 13-September 17 New Hanover Regional Medical Center is hosting DEEP, an evidence-based diabetes self-management education program for people with prediabetes or diabetes, and relatives of those with diabetes. The teacher is responsible to deliver instruction that is based on the approved curricula and mission of the school, and to create a safe, orderly and Catholic learning environment for his/her students.  Prepare students for liturgy.  Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students.  Provides opportunities for music ensembles including orchestra, band, choir & musicals.  Differentiate music curriculum to meet the needs of the individual student and the student body.  Plans a balanced music program, and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.  Develops and refines music curriculum based on Diocesan standards of creating, performing, and responding.  Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during prac- tice, group rehearsals, and music performances.  Evaluates each student’s musical growth and contribution to the performance of the group that allows everyone to contribute.  Communicates clearly with parents and school faculty/staff on the progress of individual students.  Cooperation with Principal and staff in providing musical programs for school assemblies, open house, parent meetings and seasonal programs.

Division 2 Middle School Girls’ Basketball Coach Position Overview and Key Responsibilities: St. Mark Catholic School has an opening for its Division 2 middle school girls’ basketball team for the upcoming fall season. The Division 2 team is composed of mostly 7th and 6th graders. The season runs from early/late October to early February. Practices and games are usually held 3 -4 days per week beginning at 3:30 or 5:30 p.m.

Minimum Requirements Applicants must be at least 19 years old, be able to pass a criminal background check, complete certification in an online course in concussion protocol, and participate in Safe Environment Training as mandated by the Diocese of Raleigh. Ap- plicants should enjoy working with middle school students, be a Christian role model, and have a strong background in coaching girls’ basketball.
