Intoduction to SNOW PASS - GMC 2003 Welcome to Snow Pass. This is the first GMC to be held at this location, and as far as we can ascertain, you are only the second group to have ever camped amongst this group of lakes. Many GMC’s are situated in valleys; however, this site is unusual as you are on the Continental Divide at an E-W “pass” between the Sullivan and Athabasca rivers, this is the arbitrary division between the Columbia Icefield to the south and the Chaba/Clemenceau Icefields to the north. But, you are also at a N-S pass between the Wales and “Watershed” glaciers, so you are at a “four way intersection” and from Base Camp you can access seven (7) different glacier systems. An intriguing local feature is the snout of the “Watershed” glacier, which actually divides so that it flows both west to join the Wales Glacier and thus drains to the Pacific and also turns east and feeds to the Arctic, which is why it is called the “Watershed” Glacier. In 2003, it may not be too obvious why in 1919 the Alberta/British Columbia Interprovincial Survey called this location “Snow Pass” but in the 1930’s (and even ? the early 1950’s) your Base Camp was still completely ice covered! There was permanent ice/snow from the “Aqueduct” to the “Watershed” to the “Toronto” Glaciers, an area of snow 5 km E-W and 10km N-S. Thus, in 1919, it really was a “snow pass”. However, there are few 12 high temporal resolution studies on glacier calving, especially in East Antarctica. Here 13 we use remote sensing to investigate monthly glacier terminus change across six marine- 14 terminating outlet glaciers in Porpoise Bay (-76°S, 128°E), Wilkes Land (East 15 Antarctica), between November 2002 and March 2012. This reveals a large 16 simultaneous calving event in January 2007, resulting in a total of ~2,900 km2 of ice 17 being removed from glacier tongues. Our observations suggest that sea-ice must be 18 removed from glacier termini for any form of calving to take place, and we link this 19 major calving event to a rapid break-up of the multi-year sea-ice which usually occupies 20 Porpoise Bay. -

Geologically it appears to be a part of it. Botanically it contains Pina shrinkiana, or the Tian-Shan spruce, the characteristic conifer of Turkestan; whilst zoologically it was observed that the northern foothills formed the northern limit of the Chukor partridge (Caccabis chucar). The real dividing-line, therefore, between Central and Northern Asiatic types, lies somewhere between the Barlik and Sair mountains, and not, as might be expected, in the rift-like depression called the Dzungarian Gate. The Sair mountains are the eastern continuation of the Tarbogatai, and although they were not explored, it was noticed that they formed the southern limit of the Siberian larch. -

In contrast, the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) has largely been in balance or slightly gaining mass over the past two decades. This is consistent with the long-standing view that the EAIS is relatively immune to global warming. However, several recent reports have highlighted instabilities in the EAIS in the past, and some numerical models now predict near-future sea level contributions from the ice sheet, albeit with large uncertainties surrounding the rates of mass loss. -

Here 13 we use ENVISAT ASAR wide swath mode imagery to investigate monthly glacier 14 terminus change across six marine-terminating outlet glaciers in Porpoise Bay (-76°S, 15 128°E), Wilkes Land (East Antarctica), between November 2002 and March 2012. This 16 reveals a large near-simultaneous calving event in January 2007, resulting in a total of 17 ~2,900 km2 of ice being removed from glacier tongues. We also observe the start of a 18 similar large near-simultaneous calving event in March 2016. Our observations suggest 19 that both of these large calving events are driven by the break-up of the multi-year sea- 20 ice which usually occupies Porpoise Bay. However, these break-up events appear to 21 have been driven by contrasting mechanisms. We link the 2007 sea-ice break-up to 22 atmospheric circulation anomalies in December 2005 weakening the multi-year sea-ice 23 through a combination of surface melt and a change in wind direction prior to its 24 eventual break-up in January 2007. -

One thing that suggests itself very strongly in listening to his paper is that a great deal more work of a strictly geographical kind is rapidly becoming practicablc now that the plant-physiologistshavcelaborated their data. They know what to look for and what conditions are important, and now that experimental stations are coming into existence in different parts of the world geographical comparisons can be made. -
