NORTH SEA] BASIC SYSTEM ' • HIS is the only Basic System whose watershed does not penetrate beyond the Alps, so it is immaterial whether it be traced·from W. to E. as [Adriatic .w. North Sea], or from E. toW. as [North Sea . w. Adriatic]. The Basic Watershed, which also answers to the title [Po ~ w. Rhine], is short arid for purposes of practical convenience scarcely requires subdivision, but the distinction between the Aar basin (actually Reuss, and Limmat) and that of the Rhine itself, is of too great significance to be overlooked, to say nothing of the magnitude and importance of the Major Branch System involved. This gives two Basic Sections of very unequal dimensions, but the ., Alps being of natural origin cannot be expected to fall into more or less equal com partments. Two rather less unbalanced sections could be obtained by differentiating Ticino.- and Adda-drainage on the Po-side, but this would exhibit both hydrographic and Alpine inferiority. (1) BASIC SECTION SYSTEM (Po .W. AAR]. This System happens to be synonymous with (Po .w. Reuss] and with [Ticino .w. Tours à ski St-Luc - Bella Tola - Borterpass - Massstafel - Senntum – Cab. de Tourtemagne (Chemin normal en hiver) Depuis St-Luc, prendre les remonte-pentes jusqu’à la Bella Tola à 3'000 m. De là suivre les pistes de ski et quitter ces dernières avant que celles-ci ne reconduisent en plaine par le Pas de Bœuf. De là, à peaux de phoque, traverser jusqu’au Borterpass 2'838 m (20 min). Redescendre ensuite par le Meidtälli jusqu’à environ 2'400 m puis traverser vers l’Augstolu jusqu’au premier marquage à 2'360 m (coord. 619'100/117'700). Depuis ce point, suivre les autres marquages jusqu’à Massstafel. Depuis Massstafel suivre la route forestière jusqu’à Haarnadelkurve à 2'041 m. Suivre encore 300 m la route puis tourner à droite dans la forêt et rejoindre Senntum. Suivre ensuite la route qui monte jusqu’au barrage, contourner le lac et le traverser pour rejoindre un peu plus loin le petit monte-charge. Suivre la moraine contre le sud puis monter à la cabane de Tourtemagne. Compter 4 heures depuis la Bella Tola. St-Luc - Gämsschwart - Gälushaupt - Massstafel - Senntum – Cabane de Tourtemagne (5-6h) Depuis l’hôtel Weisshorn ou la cabane Bella Tola monter par le lac de Cambevert au Gämsschwart à 2'794 m. Traverser en légère pente le col à l’est du Gälus Häupt. Depuis le col redescendre par l’Äugsttälli à Massstafel. Depuis Massstafel suivre la route forestière jusqu’à Haarnadelkurve à 2'041 m. Suivre encore 300 m la route puis tourner à droite dans la forêt et rejoindre Senntum. -

DANGAR ' WING to 1-Ians' abnormal carelessness in regard to all matters appertaining to himself, the greater part of his mountaineering achievements are not recorded in this book at all. He is fortunately in the habit of leaving it at home, or it would long since have been destroyed or lost.' Thus \vrote Sir Edward Davidson in the Fuhrerbuch of Hans Jaun, in 1887. Covering a period of thirty-five years, the book contains but thirty one entries most of them signed by the best known amateurs of the time and it is therefore a very incomplete history of J aun's career. Although his habit of leaving his book at home is, no doubt, the chief reason for the many omissions, several of his Herren must bear a share of the responsibility. J. Oakley Maund, for instance, apart from signing with C. T. Dent an entry in reference to an ascent of the Bietschhorn, has written less than a dozen lines in the book, and he does not specifically mention a single one of the many expeditions he made with Jaun. Of two entries by Herr Georg Griiber, one covers a period of seven years, and neither Maund nor Middlemore makes mention of the work of that glorious week in 1876 which, as one of the participants held, ' was entitled to be considered from a purely climbing point of view as a tour de force unsurpassed in the history of the Alps.' Middlemore, however, has paid a." well deserved tribute to his old guide in Pioneers of the Alps. -

Intoduction to SNOW PASS - GMC 2003 Welcome to Snow Pass. This is the first GMC to be held at this location, and as far as we can ascertain, you are only the second group to have ever camped amongst this group of lakes. Many GMC’s are situated in valleys; however, this site is unusual as you are on the Continental Divide at an E-W “pass” between the Sullivan and Athabasca rivers, this is the arbitrary division between the Columbia Icefield to the south and the Chaba/Clemenceau Icefields to the north. But, you are also at a N-S pass between the Wales and “Watershed” glaciers, so you are at a “four way intersection” and from Base Camp you can access seven (7) different glacier systems. An intriguing local feature is the snout of the “Watershed” glacier, which actually divides so that it flows both west to join the Wales Glacier and thus drains to the Pacific and also turns east and feeds to the Arctic, which is why it is called the “Watershed” Glacier. In 2003, it may not be too obvious why in 1919 the Alberta/British Columbia Interprovincial Survey called this location “Snow Pass” but in the 1930’s (and even ? the early 1950’s) your Base Camp was still completely ice covered! There was permanent ice/snow from the “Aqueduct” to the “Watershed” to the “Toronto” Glaciers, an area of snow 5 km E-W and 10km N-S. Thus, in 1919, it really was a “snow pass”. THE exploration of the main range of the Canadian Rocky mountains lying between the sources of the Athabasca river and the Kicking Horse pass has been the subject of two papers read by myself before the Royal Geographical Society. In these two papers I attempted to give a description of some of the great snowfields that exist amongst the Rocky mountains, and also as far as possible to make clear the geo- graphy of a mountain district up till that time but little known.
