Christmas has come early for Bradninch Youth Football

By the time you read this the “Tesco Bags of Help Scheme” that has hopefully raised several hundreds of pounds for the Bradninch & Hele Memory café and for the Duchy Pre -school will be drawing to an end.

However, this is not the end of the support Tesco are offering Bradninch. For November & December the Bradninch Youth Football club will be one of the three to drop the blue discs into the box.

Most of the funding needed to build the showers, changing rooms and toilets in the football club barn has been raised and work will start in the new year. The club still needs funds to equip the snack kitchen and to fit out the changing rooms with benches and Hammett Poultry seats. The funds raised could go a long way to pay for these. 12 Bradninch Question Time - A Huge Success!

I thought I would write this while I am still buzzing from the success of the first Bradninch Question Time event! The event was run along similar lines to the BBC’s Question Time and was skillfully chaired by our very own Simon Tytherleigh.

We had a great lineup on the panel consisting of very distinguished individuals from around the re- gion: Professor Michelle Ryan - Professor of Social and Organisational Psychology/Dean of Postgradu- ate Research and Director of the University of Exeter Doctoral College, Bea Gare Women’s Equality Party - Exeter Branch Leader and member of national steering committee, Alex White Lib Dem - Central Devon Parliamentary candidate at the last two elec- tions, Clare Wright Independent - , Yvonne Atkinson Labour - DDC Cabinet member, Amanda Ford - Conservative Councillor Teignbridge District Council.

Advanced ticket sales generated a plethora of di- verse questions covering education, the poverty/ wealth gap, the future of healthcare, BREXIT, rural issues - funding cuts affecting our town, the state of politics and women’s equality. These were read out by the questioner and supplementary questions were also taken from the audience.

The panel had no prior knowledge of the specific questions although they were briefed on the subjects that might arise. The quality of the debate was excel- lent, especially where there was specialist knowledge particularly around the NHS, BREXIT and equality issues. The debate was lively, interesting and at times heated but always remained respectful.

After the event four of the panelists were so enthusi- astic to continue the debate that they joined us in The Castle for a drink. They were so positive about the success of the evening that they would be keen to be involved in another event in the future and would be interested in rolling it out to other parts of Devon. Edwards Plumbing Services A huge thank you to all the panellists, my colleagues Hartnoll Business Centre from WEP who hosted the event, The Guildhall staff Posthill Tiverton EX16 4NG for their facilitation, Adam Montague for managing the sound system and a special thank you Simon Tytherleigh for expertly chairing a fair and even - handed debate. • All aspects of Plumbing, Oil & Gasworks

Continuity in teaching and training

Wyndham House has been teaching younger GPs since the late 1970s when Richard Leete volun- teered Silverton to be one of the pilot centres for the Exeter GP Vocational Training Scheme. Before then newly qualified doctors would immediately start working as GPs without any educational support. They gained experience the hard way as they mud- dled through those very intimidating early years. The training scheme changed all this. Young GPs could learn in a supportive environment and this structure is still in place.

Currently medical students often spend several years after qualifying working in hospitals, some- times abroad, as the junior members of clinical teams. If they choose General Practice they will then apply for a GP training scheme. In the 1980s in the South West these courses had over 100 applicants for each place. Although access is now much easier Exeter still remains one of the more competitive schemes and as a result the caliber of GP trainees is very high. After further hospital posts learning useful skills (eg Paediatrics, Psychiatry) their GP training ends with a 12 month job in a training practice. Our patients are very used to the regular arrival and de- parture of GP Registrars who are mentored from within the practice. During this total of three years of specialist training the GP Registrars have to pass KEVIN SUSSEX both a written exam and a clinical skills assessment. as patients. It ensures GPs qualify with all the essen- Tel: 01392 881961 or Mob: 07919 950222 tial clinical and consulting skills they need.

This year Exeter Medical School has started teach- ing General Practice as a specialty to medical stu- dents early in their training. In direct contrast to the 1970s approach medical students will be learning the art and science involved in looking after a population of patients, understand the evidence for the power of continuity of care and learn the value of strong rela- tionships between doctor and patient that make GP practices the bedrock of the NHS. Wyndham House is again contributing extensively in the early stages. This new course is being directly sponsored by the Department of Health and will be the template for other medical schools to follow. At a time when Gen- eral Practice is under pressure hopefully educating medical students about its value and exposing them to its rewards will reinvigorate recruitment again.

It is of course thanks to our patients who are so will- ing to help students and Registrars that we receive very positive feedback from both. Ultimately this is a team effort from which we all should benefit as it is likely that some of the medical students coming to the practice this year could return several times as they pass through their years as junior doctors and GP trainees. One of them might be a future Wynd- ham House GP.
