The neococcoids form a mono- phyletic group supported by both morphological and genetic data. In contrast, the monophyly of the archaeococcoids is uncertain and the higher level ranks within it have been controversial, particularly since the late Professor Jan Koteja introduced his multi-family classification for scale insects in 1974. Recent phylogenetic studies using molecular and morphological data support the recognition of up to 15 extant families of archaeococcoids, including 11 families for the former Margarodidae sensu lato, vindicating Koteja’s views. Archaeococcoids are represented better in the fossil record than neococcoids, and have an adequate record through the Tertiary and Cretaceous but almost no putative coccoid fos- sils are known from earlier. -

In this study, scale insect (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) specimens extracted from Hun- garian Natural History Museum soil samples (2970 samples in total), all of which were collected using soil and litter sampling devices, and extracted by Berlese funnel, were examined. From these samples, 43 scale insect species (Acanthococcidae 4, Coccidae 2, Micrococcidae 1, Ortheziidae 7, Pseudococcidae 21, Putoidae 1 and Rhizoecidae 7) were found in 16 European countries. Prepared by CABI and EPPO for the EU under Contract 90/399003 Data Sheets on Quarantine Pests Aonidiella citrina IDENTITY Name: Aonidiella citrina (Coquillett) Synonyms: Aspidiotus citrinus Coquillett Chrysomphalus aurantii citrinus (Coquillett) Taxonomic position: Insecta: Hemiptera: Homoptera: Diaspididae Common names: Yellow scale (English) Cochenille jaune (French) Escama amarilla de los cítricos (Spanish) Notes on taxonomy and nomenclature: The original description by Coquillett is inadequate and simply refers to 'the yellow scale' on orange (Nel, 1933). A. citrina is morphologically very similar to the Californian red scale, Aonidiella aurantii (Maskell), and was considered to be a variety until Nel (1933) raised it to specific level based on a comparative study of their ecology, biology and morphology. Bayer computer code: AONDCI EU Annex designation: II/A1 HOSTS A. citrina is polyphagous attacking plant species belonging to more than 50 genera in 32 families. The main hosts of economic importance are Citrus spp., especially oranges (C. sinensis), but the insect is also recorded incidentally on a wide range of ornamentals and some fruit crops including Acacia, bananas (Musa paradisiaca), Camellia including tea (C. sinensis), Clematis, Cucurbitaceae, Eucalyptus, Euonymus, guavas (Psidium guajava), Hedera helix, Jasminum, Ficus, Ligustrum, Magnolia, mangoes (Mangifera indica), Myrica, olives (Olea europea), peaches (Prunus persica), poplars (Populus), Rosa, Schefflera actinophylla, Strelitzia reginae, Viburnum and Yucca. The main potential hosts in the EPPO region are Citrus spp. growing in the southern part of the region, around the Mediterranean. ABSTRACT Scale insects (Coccoidae: Hemiptera) are the most important pests infested citrus trees in Egypt. The present work dealt with the scale insects infested citrus trees and thier natural enemies as well as a key of these pests in Egypt . The results indicated that seven species of scale insects were recorded infested citrus trees in Egypt. Also taxonomic key of the seven species of scale insects was included. During the present work the results indicated that the populations of red scale, Aonidiella aurantii (Maskell) has two peaks one in April and the second one in October. In this work two parasitoids recorded associated with red scale. Theses are Aphytis lingnanensis Compere and Habrolepis aspidioti Compere and Annecke.It is recorded here two peaks for each parasitoid in April and October for A. lingnanensis and in July and November for H. aspidioti in Beni- Suef. Also this work indicated that citrus wax scale, Ceroplastes floridensis Comstock has two peaks the first in May and the second in October. In the present work two parasitoids recorded associated with citrus wax scale. These are Metaphycus helvolus (Compere) and Microterus flavus (Howard). It is recorded here two peaks for each parasitoid in May and October for in Gharbiya .The present work observed , black scale Chrysomphalus aonidum (L.) has two peaks the first in May and the second in November. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A new scale insect, Aolacoccus angophorae gen. nov. and sp. nov. (Eriococcidae), is described from the bark of Ango- phora (Myrtaceae) growing in the Sydney area of New South Wales, Australia. These insects do not produce honeydew, are not ant-tended and probably feed on cortical parenchyma. The adult female is pupillarial as it is retained within the cuticle of the penultimate (second) instar. The crawlers (mobile first-instar nymphs) emerge via a flap or operculum at the posterior end of the abdomen of the second-instar exuviae. The adult and second-instar females, second-instar male and first-instar nymph, as well as salient features of the apterous adult male, are described and illustrated. The adult female of this new taxon has some morphological similarities to females of the non-pupillarial palm scale Phoenicococcus marlatti Cockerell (Phoenicococcidae), the pupillarial palm scales (Halimococcidae) and some pupillarial genera of armoured scales (Diaspididae), but is related to other Australian Myrtaceae-feeding eriococcids. -

Galvez Institute of Plant Breeding, College of Agriculture and Food Science, University of the Philippines Los Baños, College, Laguna, Philippines 4031 Corresponding author: [email protected] (Received: October 3, 2018; Accepted: May 19, 2019) ABSTRACT The devastation of millions of coconut palms caused by outbreak infestation of the invasive Coconut Scale Insect (CSI) Aspidiotus rigidus Reyne, has posed a serious threat to the industry in the Philippines. The life history of A. rigidus on coconut and mangosteen was comparatively studied to understand the effects of host-plant species on its development, to investigate potential host-suitability factors that contributed to its outbreak infestation, and to gather baseline information on the development and characteristics of this pest. The study was conducted at the Institute of Plant Breeding, College of Agriculture and Food Science, University of the Philippines Los Baños. Insect size (body and scale) was not significantly different on both hosts during egg, crawler, white cap, pre-second and second instar stages, as well as during male pre-pupal, pupal and adult stages. The female third instars and adults, however, were bigger on mangosteen than on coconut. At the end of second instar, sexual differentiation was very visible wherein parthenogenic females further undergone two developmental stages: third instar and adults that feed permanently on the leaves. Males undergone three stages: pre- pupa, pupa and winged adults. -

CES, Bugwood.org, #5521505 The crapemyrtle bark scale (Acanthococcus (=Eriococcus) lagerstroemiae) is in the family Eriococcidae (or Acanthococcidae, as the taxonomy of this family is still being debated). This group is in the superfamily Coccoidea (scale insects) and the order Hemiptera (true bugs). The primary host in North America, crapemyrtle, Lagerstroemia spp., are deciduous flowering trees popular in ornamental landscapes. They are top-sellers in the nursery trade, with the annual wholesale value estimated to be $66 million in 2014. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The adult females of two new species of Diaspididae (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) are described and placed in Anzaspis Henderson (previously only known from New Zealand): A. neocordylinidis Łagowska & Hodgson and A. pandani Łagowska & Hodgson. The former is close to A. cordylinidis (Maskell), currently only known from New Zealand and found on the same host plant species, and the latter is very close to Chionaspis pandanicola Williams & Watson, only currently known from Fiji, and also collected on the same host plant species. Two previously described Chionaspis species already known from Fiji, i.e. C. freycinetiae Williams & Watson and C. pandanicola Williams & Watson are transferred to Anzaspis as Anzaspis freycinetiae (Williams & Watson) comb. nov. and A. pandanicola (Williams & Watson) comb. nov., and a third species, C. rhaphidophorae Williams & Watson, is transferred to Serenaspis as Serenaspis rhaphidophorae (Williams & Watson) comb. nov.. The reasons for these nomenclatural decisions and the relationship between the scale insect fauna of Fiji and New Zealand are discussed. A key is provided to all related species in the tropical South Pacific and New Zealand. -

E-mails : [email protected], [email protected] Abstract This study designed at identifying insect pests that attack some trees and shrubs grown in the orchards in different regions, middle of Iraq. The investigation included date palm, citrus, pomegranate trees and grape shrubs. During the survey, 10 species were recorded on date palms (the most infested was Ommatissus lybicus de Bergevin, 1930, followed by Oryctes elegans Prell, 1914), four species on citrus (the most infested was Aonidiella orientalis (Newstead, 1894) followed by whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood, 1856), one species only on pomegranate ( Aphis punicae Passerini, 1863), and one species Arboridia hussaini (Ghauri, 1963) on Grapes. Given the importance of date palm trees in Iraq, the most important insect pests present and recorded in previous studies have been summarized. Also, the synonyms of the species and their geographical distribution are provided. Keywords : Iraq, Orchards, Pests, Shrubs, Survey, Trees.
