Snout Scale, a Potential Pest of Citrus in Florida

Stocks, Ph.D.; Bureau of Entomology, Nematology and Plant Pathology [email protected] or 1-888-397-1517 INTRODUCTION The first continental record of Fiorinia proboscidaria Green, snout scale, was collected on December 17, 2013, by JoAnn Hoffman (UF) from Hillsborough County and identified by Dr. Ian Stocks (Stocks 2015). There are at least 24 records after its first detection in Florida from five counties including Hillsborough, Flagler, Pinellas, Putnam and Santa Rosa. The most recent record was from Flagler County (E2020-2353), identified by Dr. Zee Ahmed as a new county record. The genus Fiorinia contains several major pest species. Snout scale is considered to be an important pest of Citrus (Stocks 2015). A recent sample and three follow-up samples from the last year on Citrus were heavily infested. All snout scale samples were collected from residential areas. This updated Pest Alert is aimed at preventing its introduction to and establishment in commercial Citrus growing areas in Florida. DIAGNOSTICS In old infestations, multiple stages of snout scale were found commingled on the lower surface of the leaves (Fig. 1a), causing chlorotic yellow patches (Fig. 1d). The presence of multiple stages suggests multiple generations each year. In early infestations, yellow-colored first instars (crawlers) (Fig. 1b, c) and second-instar males with white wax (Fig. 1b, e, f) were commonly observed on the lower surface of leaves. -

Italy The armored scales (Family Diaspididae) constitute one of the most successful groups of plant-parasitic arthropods and include some of the most damaging and refractory pests of perennial crops and ornamentals. The Diaspididae is the largest and most specialized of the dozen or so currently recognized families which compose the superfamily Coccoidea. A recent world catalog (19) lists 338 valid genera and approximately 1700 species of armored scales. Although the diaspidids have been more intensively studied than any other group of coccids, probably no more than half of the existing forms have been recognized and named. Armored scales occur virtually everywhere perennial vascular plants are found, although a few of the most isolated oceanic islands (e.g. the Hawaiian group) apparently have no endemic representatives and are populated entirely by recent adventives. In general. the greatest numbers and diversity of genera and species occur in the tropics. subtropics. and warmer portions of the temperate zones. With the exclusion of the so-called palm scales (Phoenicococcus. DARWISH *Faculty of Agriculture, Damanhour, **Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University ***Plant protection research institute,Agriculture research center,Dokki, Cairo, Egypt ABSTRACT Field studies were carried out on the purple scale Lepidosaphes (Cornuaspis) beckii (Newman) at El- Behaira Governorate throughout two successive years extended from February 2009 to February 2011. Three peaks of overlapping generations were recorded per year. In the 1st year three peaks of infestation were recorded in May 1st, September 4th and November 13th. While in 2nd year of investigation, these peaks were recorded during April 30th, mid October and November 26th. The highest rate of population densities were recorded at March, April, decreased up to August then raised up again in September, October and November. The insect distributes on the whole navel orange tree with special preference to the southern and western cardinal sides. The population of L. beckii prefers the middle stratum of navel orange where considerable density of insect population usually occurs. The relationships between the population density of inspected insect stages and prevailing weather factors -degree of temperature and relative humidity- were studied and statistically analyzed through both the years of study. Positive strong correlations were detected between daily minimum and daily mean of temperature and total counts of insect population. -

Eighteen species of hymenopterous parasitoid of armoured scale insects (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) were recorded in a survey of host plants in three locations in Egypt during 1994- 1997. The 16 species of Aphelinidae and two Encyrtidae are listed, along with their diaspidid hosts and location in Egypt; ten species were new records for Egypt. Key words: survey, geographic distribution, host range, rearing methods, Ablerus, Aphytus, Coccophagoides, Encarsia, Marietta, Habrolepis. INTRODUCTION Prior to the studies of Priesner & Hosny (1940), very little was known about the parasitoids of armoured scale insects in Egypt. Priesner & Hosny recorded six aphelinid species: Aphytis chrysomphali (Mercet), A. diaspidis Howard, A. maculicornis (Masi), A. mytilaspidis (Le Baron), Encarsia citrina (Craw) and E. lounsburyi (Berlese & Paoli). Later, Abdel-Fattah & El-Saadany (1979) recorded Aphytis lepidosaphes Compere associated with Lepidosaphes beckii (Newman), while Aphytis cohni De Bach was recorded from Aonidiella aurantii (Maskell) in Alexandria by Hafez (1988). There have been no more recent records. During the period 1994-1997, a survey was conducted throughout Egypt, the results of which are given below. Each entry gives the geographic distribution and the host range; new records are indicated by an asterisk. -

UAM Agronomía y Ciencias, Universidad Autónoma Abstract –– Introduction. The genus Saissetia has 47 described species in the world, four of de Tamaulipas (UAT), them in Mexico (S. oleae, S. miranda, S. neglecta and S. tolucana). These species attack different 87149 Cd. Victoria, crops, including citrus, olives and ornamentals. Most introductions of natural enemies against Tamaulipas, S. oleae have been undertaken in North and South America, Australia and the Mediterranean México countries. However, no natural enemy species have been purposedly introduced into Mexico [email protected] against Saissetia spp. Materials and methods. During 1998–2003, samples of Saissetia spp. were collected in the States of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Oaxaca and Guanajuato; all the emerged parasitoids were determined. Appropriate scientific publications were consulted to find out about any other Saissetia parasitoids recorded from Mexico. Results and discussion. Seventeen parasitoid species from five families of Chalcidoidea (Aphelinidae, Encyrtidae, Eupelmidae, Pte- romalidae and Signiphoridae) were reared from Saissetia spp. in Mexico. Conclusions. In Mexico, the species of Saissetia prefer ornamental plants and are usually heavily parasitized by several chalcidoids. Native biological control of Saissetia spp. by different parasitoids has been effective for many years in Mexico. As a result, the species of Saissetia are not considered as primary or secondary pests of citrus and ornamentals.
