Tarasp-Vulpera (1270 – 1400 m) The cradle of spa tourism in the Lower Engadine consists of 10 communities and is a former Austrian exclave that joined the canton of Grisons in 1803. Vulpera, the largest of the ten, is situated on a plateau overlooking the Inn. Tourism started here at the beginning of the last century with the discovery of the curative powers of the local mineral waters. Special highlights include the 9-hole golf course, the tennis hall and the outdoor swimming pool. Below the almost 1000-year-old castle of Tarasp lies the village of Fontana. Here, at the entrance of the Swiss National Park, you find a calm and recuperative ambience. On a sun soaked plateau away from the daily bustle the village of Ftan exists in two parts, Ftan Pitschen and Ftan Grond (small and large). In winter a newly constructed ski lift transports guests directly to the Motta Naluns ski area. The ‘Kinderland’ ski slope on the edge of the village with its magic carpet lift is a great place where beginners can start skiing. The legendary Ftan toboggan run from Prui back to the village provides excellent winter fun. From 2011 the chairlift will also be available in summer for those wanting to wander through the alpine Contact meadows. Susch (1400 m) ‘La Tuor’ and the church characterize the village of Susch. The village is located in a triangle between Scuol, Zernez und Davos. Split by the Inn River, the village along with the Flüela Pass and the Vereina Tunnel form the Lower Engadine’s transportation hub connecting the valley with the northwest of Switzerland. During the heyday of post coach transportation when travelers crossed the Flüela, Susch was a popular village in which to overnight. Ideally situated between Scuol, Val Mustair, the Swiss National Park, Davos Klosters and the Upper Engadine, Susch can be recommended as village from which to base your summer treks or winter ski tours. Of special interest is the cross-country ski trail that links with the Engadine marathon trail or in summer the lakes of Macun in the National Park. The architecture and ruins of the village of Gonda are rich in history, while the paintings in the church of Lavin (dating from 1500) are some of the most important in Grisons. The painting is exceptional in that it depicts Christ as ruler of the world while the Holy Trinity is symbolized with four eyes, three mouths and three noses. Thanks to the public parking area, Guarda has nowadays barely any traffic. The old buildings of Guarda are in pristine condition, which in 1975 earnt the village the Henri-Louis-Wakker prize from the Swiss Cultural Protection Society for exemplary preservation of Guarda’s buildings. The village is characterized by its houses which are colorfully decorated and embossed by Sgraffito giving Guarda the feeling of an outdoor museum. The village Contact is full of life.
