By examining the characteristics of ceramics manufactured during the Woodland Period in southern Kentucky, this thesis answers questions related to the behavior of the potters who lived and worked there. Using the theoretical basis of ceramic ecology and technological choice, this thesis examines the choices made by the potters of two sites, the Long (15Ru17) and Rowena (15Ru10) sites, located along the Cumberland River in Russell County, Kentucky. The two sites are also compared to one another and similar assemblages in the Upper Cumberland River Valley, in terms of temporal occupation and utilization of tempering resources. Ultimately, the potters who occupied the Long and Rowena sites during the Woodland Period used locally available materials to temper their clay, even as they emulated other ceramic types. In terms of the two sites themselves, it appears that while they were not occupied by the same population of potters, they did employ similar tempering agents and stylistic types. Examining the behavior of potters who occupied these two sites informs the researcher about the behavior of the larger region of the Upper Cumberland Valley. Royce 2011 Abstract Geophysical surveys using fluxgate gradiometer and magnetic susceptibility instruments were conducted at the early Late Woodland Water Plant site to investigate the community patterning within the site. The site was first investigated through archaeological survey and excavation under the direction of Dr. William S. Dancey approximately thirty years ago. The Water Plant site is located in Franklin County, Ohio within the Middle Ohio River Valley region. The re-examination of this site using different investigative techniques has yielded additional, illuminating information. As a result of the fluxgate gradiometer survey, the outer prehistoric ditch at the site was mapped in its entirety and defines the community area of the site. An inner prehistoric ditch and palisade were also mapped during the fluxgate gradiometer survey and additionally, sections of post screens were detected at gaps in the outer prehistoric ditch at the site. The magnetic susceptibility survey data indicate that the site area within the ditches had a high frequency of human use. Based on all these data, the site does appear to be definitively defensive in nature based on the two sets of earthen ditches and wooden palisade features encompassing roughly an 8-acre area and may be one of the earliest occurrences of a fortified community in the Middle Ohio River Valley.

Martin 147 pages December 2013 Ogden-Fettie is a Middle Woodland Havana-Hopewell mound group in the Central Illinois Valley. Fv196 is the midden area near the largest mound. The function of Fv196 is in question, because it does not conform to the settlement and function models that have been applied to other sites. The ceramic collection from Fv196 was typed and categorized into categories based on perceived function, either habitation or ceremonial. The majority of the pottery belonged to the Havana series, which is traditionally considered habitation pottery; however, many of the Havana sherds are decorated indicating a ceremonial function.

The early Fort Ancient component is represented by Jessamine Series ceramic and Type 2 Fine Triangular projectile points, while the late Fort Ancient component is represented by Madisonville series ceramics, Type 4 and Type 6 Fine Triangular projectile points, and unifacial and bifacial endscrapers. The presence of a marginella shell bead and mica fragments reflect long distance interaction with groups living to the south, and the recovery of a glass bead and a copper bead points to interaction with Europeans. Based on the presence of intact subplowzone deposits associated with both components, and the recovery of human remains, the Howard site is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

Sullivan, III ABSTRACT The Ronald Watson Gravel site (15Be249) is located on a terrace of the Ohio River, in Boone County, Kentucky, just downstream from Cincinnati. Excavated during the early 1990s, initial research suggested inconclusively that a transitional Late Woodland/Fort Ancient occupation may be present. This thesis re-examines a portion of the ceramic collection from the site, and re-evaluates this conclusion. Results of the analysis from feature and surface contexts, in addition to the acquisition of six radiocarbon dates, suggest that the site was occupied during the Late Archaic, Middle Woodland, Late Woodland, and Middle Fort Ancient periods, without conclusive evidence of any transitional occupations. The data were then compared to a southwestern Ohio ceramic chronology, in order to further tighten the periods of occupation at 15Be249.     PREHISTORIC HOPEWELL METEORITE COLLECTING: CONTEXT AND IMPLICATIONS OLAF H. PRUFER Department of Humanities and Social Studies, Case Institute of Technology, Cleveland, Ohio INTRODUCTION This paper examines and evaluates the curious practice of meteorite collecting among the prehistoric Hopewell people of Eastern North America and, more specifically, of Ohio. The Hopewell culture complex, viewed in overall terms, covers a temporal range from approximately 400 B.C. to 400 A.D. It is not certain that this total range is applicable to the Ohio area, the center of Hopewell cultural intensity. There are indications that Ohio Hopewell began somewhat later and ended some- what earlier than other Hopewell manifestations (Prufer, 1961). The Hopewell complex represents one of the most highly-developed prehistoric cultures of Eastern North America. It is principally characterized by a tendency toward an extreme mortuary ceremonialism expressed in the construction of large and richly furnished burial mounds and earthworks. The entire ethos of Hopewell culture appears to have been directed toward this ceremonialism. Nearly all artistic efforts, special technological skills, and a far-flung trading network were devoted to providing goods to be ultimately deposited in burials. The dichotomy between the fabulous Hopewell burial mounds and their contents, and the unspectacular Hopewell village sites is sharply apparent, especially in Ohio and Illinois, where some of the great tumuli have yielded literally thousands of ceremonial objects. The production of such objects of high quality seems to have been the main interest of the Hopewellians. Part of this conspicuous collecting and mortuary disposal of wealth is a marked interest in exotic materials such as obsidian, from the Rockies or the Southwest, grizzly bear canine teeth from the Rockies, marine shells from Florida, native copper and silver from the Upper Great Lakes region, and mica from Virginia and the Carolinas.

    The Havana Culture Late in the Archaic Period, near the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers, dramatic cultural changes occurred quickly. The area was occupied by the Prairie Lake people of the Red Ocher tradition, who lived in substantial villages on river bluffs above the floodplains. About 2,600 BP, pottery-making Marion groups from the north as well as Black Sand people from the south began settling the floodplains of the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. These immigrants had a profound influence on the local people, who soon abandoned their bluff based villages and Red Ochre cemetary burials. The intrusive immigrants lived in small hamlets on the floodplain. These hamlets have produced no evidence of their burials or mortuary activity, but they do contain the first pottery in Illinois. By 2,200 BP, the interaction of the Marion, Black Sand and Red Ocher cultures catalyzed rapid culture change and the beginning of the Havana culture. (Farnsworth 2009) Havana Hopewell By 2,100 BP, about 100 years after the Havana culture emerged, extensive mound building and Hopewellian mortuary ritual had begun. Eventually, the Havana built Hopewell mounds and ritual centers at ~ 9-12 mi. intervals in the floodplain along the river. Many ritual centers were associated with bluff-top villages with adjacent mounded cemeteries, suggesting some groups chose to continue some of the Red Ocher culture. (Farnsworth 2009; Griffin 1967) Ceramics The Havana developed a distinctive limestone temper ceramic technology and style. Their Fine Havana Zoned Stamped vessels are the first Hopewell pottery. Pots with distinctive decorations were later imported from Hopewell centers in Tennessee and Georgia.

AHLRICHS (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) and KATHERINE STERNER-MILLER (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) During the Late Archaic to Early Woodland transition, caches of blue gray chert bifaces were deposited throughout the Midwest, often in association with burials. The types of analyses that can be conducted on these bifaces are restricted by NAGPRA. Specifically, cleaning of artifacts deemed necessary to conduct high power use-wear analysis is prohibited. An experiment testing three progressive levels of washing demonstrates that Wyandotte chert is fine-grained enough to display surface polishes from use even without intensive washing. The positive results of this experiment are then applied a sample of bifaces from the Riverside site in Michigan’s Upper Peninsu- la. [13] The Lichliter Site Project: A Model for Revealing Hidden Archaeological Collec- tions SARAH M. AISENBREY and WILLIAM E. KENNEDY (Dayton Society of Natural History) The DSNH is cataloging a large collection of archaeological artifacts from the Lichliter site, excavated in the 1960s, near Dayton, Ohio. The materials are from the Late Woodland, a poorly known time period in Ohio prehistory. Despite wide interest, no other professional had ever seen the artifacts, maps, or notes until the collection was returned in 2012. To accomplish deciphering and cataloging the site collection into a meaningful, cross-referenced database, the DSNH staff trained on QLC’s ArcheoLINK software. This project will serve as the first case study in applying ArcheoLINK as a collection management solution for archaeological research collections.
