Section 50 RANDOM NOTES From Monday, I3th October to Friday, ijth October, College was visited by Her Majesty's Inspectors of Schools. It was a most interesting and, for many, a novel experience and surely we are allowed to record here with justifiable pride that the inspectors were at least satisfied with what they saw and heard. They had the chance, and took it, of seeing College hard at it in every sort of activity— the classroom and laboratory, the playing field, the Dining Hall, the societies and clubs, the gymnasium; nor did the catering side of College escape their eagle eye. Many of the boys actually seemed to enjoy the week, so did the masters. After all, we knew College well and had a great deal of confidence in it: we were glad that outside visitors agreed with us. * * * Mr. Ryder has now handed over the leadership of College rugby to Mr. Roche, after many years of very hard work. The Principal, in his report on Founder's Day, thanked him for all he had done. Mr. Ryder spared neither himself, his time nor his pocket for the good of College rugby; in thanking him, College also wish Mr. Roche very good luck in his new task. * * * We said goodbye last term to Mr. Cooil, who has gone to Heanor Grammar School, Derbyshire, and to Mr. Crabtree, who has gone to 2 THE HARROVIAN [December Bedford Modern School. They took with them our best wishes for the future. In their place we welcome Mr. G. C. Kelly, M.A. (Cantab.), who has joined us from Downside School, and Mr. G. A. Glover, A.T.D., who comes to us straight from the College of Art, Leeds. Wo wish them both a long and happy stay here. On the 27th September* , Mr. Owe* n gave* an extremely interesting lecture, illustrated by two films, on the work of the Church Mission- ary Society. He described.; as an example of this work, the help given by the Society to a. Pakistan family and showed what valuable work was being done in that country. He also gave us an extremely moving account of the life of a negro child who had caught leprosy and had been moved to a Leper Colony sponsored by the C.M.S. * * * Three free-halves have been enjoyed since the last Harrovian went to press—one on yth July (normal ration type), one on Friday 24th October (at the request of Sir Frederick Godber on Founder's Day) and one on Friday, 3ist October (at the request of Her Majesty's Inspectors). This last enabled boys to go home after lunch on the Friday for Half-Term. * * * Films seen in the gymnasium on Saturday nights so far this term have been " Seven Days To Noon " on 2oth September, " A Girl in a Million " on nth October and " Highly Dangerous " on 8th November. *+* *+* T The November 5th jollity went ofi with a bang, but on the evening of November jth. On the 5th and 6th very bad weather kept us all indoors. SIR MONTAGU BUTLER, K.C.S.I., C.B., C.I.E., C.V.O., C.B.E. It is not for us to recall here the many distinctions of Sir Montagu Butler, who died on yth November, 1952, but rather to record our deep gratitude for the service he rendered to the College during the four years that he was Lieutenant Governor and ex officio Chairman of the College Tmstees. College was suffering from the effects of the " slump " of the early 305 when Sir Montagu arrived in 1933, and by the time he left the Island in 1937 on his appointment as Master of Pembroke College, Cambridge, the tide had turned. There were more reasons than one for this, as past Harrovians have recorded, but Sir Montagu's sympathy and wisdom undoubtedly had a notable effect on the Trustees of that time. As the building and re- building schemes began to develop in 1935 and 1936, Sir Montagu's enthusiasm grew. It therefore gave great pleasure to all concerned with these schemes that the Harrovian Hall in its present form was brought into use a few months before Sir Montagu left the Island. It was in the development of this dining hall that he shewed most interest, and in which he took most pride, so that he and Lady Butler were frequent visitors during the summer term of 1937. 1952] THE HARROVIAN 3 At Cambridge Sir Montagu maintained his interest in College, and he and Lady Butler shewed kindness on many occasions to O.K.W. undergraduates. As a result of these contacts Sir Montagu kept his knowledge of College and the Isle of Man up-to-date, so that there was almost a little Manx oasis first at Pembroke and later at Grange Court. In paying this brief tribute to his memory we should like to record our gratitude to Lady Butler for her friendly and gracious kindness and to extend to her our most sincere sympathy. And what a victory!—complete and absolute, unconditional surrender. So to-day, celebrate—and then, back to work on Thursday, until our last foe, Japan, is crushed also. This is "V" Day, the day which marks the end of the war in Europe; the day for which we have waited for five and a half bitter years. The most stupendous drama the world has ever witnessed moved to its climax with breath-taking swiftness, so speedily indeed that plans for the formal announcement of the final and complete overthrow of the Nazi monster were outstripped by the march of events. For days, as triumph resounded upon triumph, we waited with eagerness for the promised declaration by the Prime Minister - the supreme architect of Victory - that Germany's surrender was complete and unconditional. Confident were the predictions that Monday would prove to be VE-Day. True, the news for which the world had been waiting came then, but it came first of all from unofficial sources.

Guy Voice 1999-2004 1 During the Second World War the Men of Burgess Hill served their country at home and in every operational theatre. At the outset of the war in 1939, young men across the land volunteered to join those already serving in the forces. Those who were reservists or territorials, along with many, who had seen action in the First World War, joined their units or training establishments. The citizens of Burgess Hill were no different to others in Great Britain and the Commonwealth as they joined the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force in large numbers. Many more of the townspeople did valuable work on the land or in industry and, living close to the sea some served in the Merchant Navy. As the war continued many others, women included, volunteered or were called up to “do their bit”.

In order to achieve this it will be necessary to examine that island from every important aspect, and an attempt will be made to do it without including an excessive number of details.

The 1st Battalion provided the Escort (The Queen’s Company), Two and Four Guards (found by Number Two Company and The Inkerman), with Nijmegen Company finding Number Three Guard. HRH The Colonel took the salute on the Colonel’s Review in glorious sunshine on 1 June and many of you will have watched the Parade on the day itself, with the distinctive voice of Lt Colonel Vince Gaunt embellishing Huw Edwards’ commentary on BBC1. All at Horse Guards were delighted with the Parade and the very high standards of drill and turnout which the Regiment maintains. 1 www.grengds.com www.grengds.com Before this on Sunday 19th May, Regimental Remembrance Day saw the Guards’ Chapel packed with Grenadiers.
