The annual dinner is named for Hunter B. Andrews who along with Vincent J. Thomas founded WHRO in 1961. At the time, both were the chairman of the school board of their cities; Mr. Andrews for the city of Hampton and Mr. Thomas for the city of Norfolk. They had the idea of teaching elementary and secondary students through television, and WHRO was born.

Each year, invited members enjoy PBS NewsHour’s Hari Sreenivasan Speaks hearing from a personality from either NPR or PBS. Last year’s special at the Hunter B.
