IMPORTANT POINTS Welcome to the Algarve and to your Villa. We hope that you have an enjoyable stay. We ask you to spend a few minutes to carefully read this house information book, which contains useful information. Here is a summary of the most important points: SECURITY: Do not leave money, passports or valuables in purses or handbags lying around the villa. If the villa has a safe, we recommend that you use it, but please read the page on security in the book. MOSQUITOES AND ANTS: are both a very common nuisance. Please read the paragraphs in the book and take the necessary precautions. SUN UMBRELLAS: Please put them down after use, as the wind can suddenly become strong, especially in the evening – if they become damaged we have to ask you to replace them. The sun umbrellas are only for villa use and NOT for the beach. Please do NOT put sun bed mattresses in the pool. Please do NOT take indoor furniture to the outside. TOILETS: Please ensure that only toilet paper is put down the toilet. TOWELS: Please do NOT use bathroom towels for the pool or beach. SHUTTERS: If the villa has the plastic roller type which is operated by pulling a cord or strap, please treat them gently in raising and lowering. Thank You. MAID SERVICE: Your maid will change your towels at mid week for 1 week stays and bed linen and towels also at the end of your first week for fortnight stays. The Maid does not do your washing up or dispose of your rubbish. RUBBISH: Please take it to the rubbish bin daily, otherwise it may attract ants. DEPARTURE DAY: Please vacate the villa by 10.00 am and ensure that you return all the keys. Thank you and we wish you a very happy holiday. ABOUT YOUR PROPERTY Page 1 of 28 SWIMMING POOL: If you feel your swimming pool is not functioning correctly or is in need of attention, please do not touch the pump mechanism, but inform our Office immediately. The pool is cleaned weekly during the summer months. In extreme hot weather an extra cleaning may be needed, please contact us immediately if the pool starts to go milky or murky. Leaves are an occupational hazard, especially in windy or exposed conditions. These will be cleared during the cleaning visits. PLEASE BE CAREFUL with CHILDREN and ESPECIALLY TODDLERS. NEVER DIVE INTO THE POOL. Terraces and interior tiled floors can get very SLIPPERY. Please never sit on indoor furniture in wet swimsuits as chlorine and suntan lotions WILL CAUSE CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE. Indoor furniture must remain inside the house and not be taken outside. WASHING: Please supply your own detergents for personal laundry. TERRACE FURNITURE: Should it rain or be windy during your stay, please always put any sun umbrellas and terrace cushions inside. DO NOT put any cushions or chairs in the pool as this ruins them and we would have to charge you for replacements. Please put the umbrellas down at the end of the day, because often a strong breeze can come up in the evening and damage them and if this is the case we will have to charge you for replacements. RUBBISH REMOVAL: Most of the rubbish should be taken to the RECYCLE bins. There are 3 different Recycle Bins in Portugal, always placed together: Green for glass (vidro); Blue for paper and card (papel e cartão) and Yellow for packages (embalagens). The remaining garbage should be taken to the RUBBISH Bins. These are made of galvanized iron or plastic, they are large containers complete with lid and have C.M.A on the front side, on some of the smaller roads there are black plastic bins, also with C.M.A or LIXO on the front of them. BREAKAGES & DAMAGES A CHARGE WILL BE MADE FOR ALL BREAKAGES AND DAMAGE AT REPLACEMENT COST. Also please note that if children wet a bed that you will be charged for a replacement mattress. Please ask us if you require plastic mattress protection covers if your child has a bed wetting problem. It would be appreciated if you could let us know immediately if you break or damage anything in your villa, so we can arrange repair or a replacement without undue delay. Thank You. ABOUT YOUR PROPERTY Page 2 of 28 ELECTRICITY 220 volts / 50hz Power sockets are 2 pin continental. In the event of a power cut it is always worth checking that the trip switch has not been “tripped” and simply needs switching on again. This is to be found in the meter box usually situated near to the front door and will be either a switch or a coloured button (to be pressed in). If the main fuse trips out again, then turn off all the individual circuits, switch on the main fuse and reconnect the other circuits slowly and one at a time, you should then find the one circuit with the problem, leave this one switched off and inform the office. The fuse box is marked with a lightning bolt symbol. GAS If your property has gas, the supply is generally not centrally piped but comes from individual gas bottles. We take this opportunity to apologise should the gas run out, please contact us immediately if this happens at any inconvenient time. Some villas have a key so that you can change the bottle yourself. Our representative will let you know where it is and how to change the bottle. GAS OVENS To light oven and grills turn knob ON and push in. HOLD in while lighting with a match at the lower area of the oven, or upper area of the grill and release after 10 seconds. The burner will then stay alight. WATER We recommend that you use bottled water for drinking and ice making. Economic use of the water during the high season is advised when due to the great influx of tourists, there can be low pressure or occasionally a real shortage of water. In case of emergency check the stopcock which is located next to the meter. Water heater: if the water heater goes out, this may be because the gas cylinder is getting low and needs to be changed. PLUMBING Due to the type of plumbing used in the Algarve, it would be appreciated if guests would ensure that ONLY TOILET PAPER or NONE is put DOWN THE TOILET. Please put babies disposable nappies, lady towels etc. in the bin provided. SHUTTERS If the villa has roller blinds, these lift and drop using the tape to one side of the window, please treat these very gently when raising or lowering the shutter itself. Extra force when raising will bang the shutter against the top stop and will probably break it. We will have to charge you for any breakages. ANTS & MOSQUITOES A word of caution: ants can be and often are, quite a problem, so we recommend that all sweet items, such as jam, sugar, etc, be kept in the refrigerator. It is also Page 3 of 28 safer to wash or to leave dirty dishes in water, in the sink. PLEASE TAKE YOUR RUBBISH AWAY EVERYDAY. Watch out especially on the first night and around young children. Plug in repellents are very effective and available in any supermarket. It’s advisable to close shutters by sunset, as this is when mosquitos become most active and enter the house. SECURITY WARNING ISSUED BY THE CONSULAR SECTION OF THE BRITISH EMBASSY Visitors to Portugal should be aware that especially tourists are a major target for thieves. Tourists will require the assistance of the Embassy following the theft of documents, belongings, travellers cheques and cash, which are seldom recovered. A little common sense will prevent you from becoming one more distressed victim so please: a) If you leave your car unattended – ensure that it contains no valuables. b) When on the beach, ensure that one member of your party attends to belongings at all times. c) Do not leave handbags, etc., unattended in bars, discos and any other establishments. d) Ensure that travellers cheques and counterfoils are kept separately. If you do have belongings stolen you should immediately report the theft to the police station, closest to the place of the theft. The form is also in English and you must take your passports along. The police will issue you a copy of their report, which is called “Certidão“. Ensure that the report contains full details of every item stolen. Page 4 of 28 The police report is essential to: a) Be granted any assistance by the embassy b) Obtain a replacement passport c) The immigration authorities to allow you to leave Portugal d) The replacement of travellers cheques e) Any insurance claim SECURITY OUR ADVICE ON SECURITY Statistically Portugal is by far the safest country in Europe, however that does not mean that we do not have any problems with burglaries and thefts from cars. If you leave the villa, leave some lights on (if you are going out for the evening) and switch the radio or television on. Please ensure ALL shutters, doors and windows are properly LOCKED when leaving the property and before retiring to bed. Be advised, if you happen to lose the property keys, you will be charged for their replacement. If the property has a safe, we advise that you use it. Whilst improved security is to be hoped for from use of the safe, burglars have been known to open safes or even remove them altogether from the building.
