Trip Report: Mexico Yucatan Extension 13th to 19th March 2013 (7 days) Mexican Sheartail by Rich Lindie Trip report compiled by tour leader: Rich Lindie RBT Yucatan Trip Report 2013 2 Royal Tern by Rich Lindie We began our first ever Rockjumper tour to Yucatan’s peninsula with a short afternoon stroll in the peaceful surroundings of the Puerto Morelos Botanical Gardens. Here, in the dry limestone forests, we found our first flocks of noisy Yucatan Jays, Yucatan Vireo, Tawny-winged and Ivory-billed Woodcreepers, Red-throated Ant Tanager and Orange Orioles, before heading to the mangroves around town. In the mangroves and adjacent wooded areas we found small bird parties containing Black-throated Green, Black Throated Blue, Cape May, Yellow-throated, Palm and Magnolia Warblers, as well as our first Grey Catbirds and Couch's Kingbirds. Not bad, considering it was an arrival day! Our first full day saw us birding along a variety of roads in the dry forest surrounding Puerto Morelos town. The majority of these roads were access tracks to some of the innumerable 'cenotes' (wells) that are found here and throughout much of the northern Yucatan. Visitors come to these cenotes for activities like swimming and zip-lining and have little impact on the forested habitats, so we enjoyed some well forested tracks and some really great birding. Among the major targets and other special birds, we successfully found a stunning male Rose-throated Tanager, pairs of Yucatan Woodpeckers, some busy Northern Bentbills, flocks of Olive-throated Parakeets and White-fronted Amazons, an endearing Ferruginous Pygmy Owl, Rose-throated Becards, Plain Chachalacas, very vocal Melodious Blackirds, Brown and Green Jays, Spot-breasted and White- bellied Wrens, Squirrel Cuckoo, Canivet's Emerald and our first female Grey-throated Chats. -

We compiled information from major databases of published life-history and trait data for all birds and imputed missing life-history data as a function of species traits with generalized linear mixed models. -

The YUCATÁN, the LACANDÓN, and COZUMEL 18 Jan–1 Feb 2013 Leader: Michael Retter Photos by Michael Retter There were a couple alterations to the tour this year, and for the better, I think. Cozumel was included as part of the main tour rather than just an extension, and we took a boat ride up into the pristine Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve. As a result, we had good looks at all of the endemic species and most of the endemic subspecies on Cozumel, and enjoyed thrilling ride up the rushing crystal waters of the Río Tzendales. Along the way, we saw some great birds, such as Scaled Pigeon and King Vulture. While birding the Río Usumacinta marshes on the last day, we had the good fortune to be invited by a kindly farmer to drive around on the levees throughout thousands of acres of rice fields, which afforded us some stellar views of immense numbers of birds. We tallied hundreds of herons, egrets, and Fork-tailed Flycatchers, and clouds of thousands of Grassland Yellow-finches. It sits atop 900-foot Semaphore Hill overlooking Soberania National Park. While its rooms are rather spartan, the food is Panama’s Canopy Tower © Ruthie Stearns excellent and the opportunity to view birds at dawn from the 360º rooftop Observation Deck above the treetops is outstanding. Twenty minutes away is the start of the famous Pipeline Road, possibly one of the best birding roads in Central and South America. From our base, daily birding outings are made to various locations in Central Panama, which vary from the primary forest around the tower, to huge mudflats near Panama City and, finally, to cool Cerro Azul and Cerro Jefe forest. An enticing example of what awaits visitors to this marvelous birding paradise can be found in excerpts taken from the Journal I write during every tour and later e- mail to participants. These are taken from my 17-page, January 2019 Journal. On our first day at Canopy Tower, with 5 of the 8 participants having arrived, we were touring the Observation Deck on top of Canopy Tower when Ruthie looked up and called my attention to a bird flying in our direction...it was a Black Hawk-Eagle! I called down to others on the floor below and we watched it disappear into the distant clouds. -

Egg fertility and hatchability in Colinus quail and their hybrids.--Until recently very few data have been published on the production and fertility of hybrids in the New World quail (Odontophorinae). Johnsgard (1970, Condor 72: 85) reviewed the records of intergeneric quail hybrids in relation to the fertility, viability, plumage characters, and egg-white proteins of interspecific hybrids produced in his laboratory (Johnsgard 1971, Auk 88: 264). A summary of this work (Johnsgard 1973, Grouse and quails of North America, Lincoln, Univ. Nebraska Press) includes fertility data on several crossesamong the three species of bobwhites (Colinus). Reported were a Crested Bobwhite (C. cristatus) X Bobwhite (C. virginianus)cross, a backcrossof an F• hybrid female (C. cristatus X C. virginianus) to a male Bobwhite, and a Bobwhite X Black-throated Bobwhite (C. nigrogularis) cross. This paper augmentsJohnsgard's findings on these particular pairs and summarizesthe results of pairings involving 15 inter se, F•, F2, and backcrosshybrid combinations of the three speciesof Colinus quail. It also records a Black-throated Bobwhite X Crested Bobwhite hybrid combination, which to my knowledge has not been reported previously. Quail were housed together as species and mixed-speciespairs, as part of a general study on the comparative behavior of the three Collnus species and their hybrids (Cink MS). Eggs were collecteddaily, placed in cool storage, and incubated in a forced-air incubator.
