Home to the millennium Mayan culture biodiversity, it has strongly been linked to human activities but at the same time to careful natural management. Different forest types and ecosystems cover the Yucata´n Peninsula and provide habitat and protection for emblematic vertebrate species, like the jaguar, tapir, howler, and spider monkeys, all of which represent essential components of the region’s natural view. This important but fragile condition of the peninsula urges us to effectively conserve and protect flora and fauna but also to bear in mind the needs and management practices of local populations. The Yucata´n Peninsula represents a perfect example of how conser- vation is connected to human activities, though this circumstance strongly indicates that both forest and coastal ecosystems represent sources of valuable economic income and well-being for the rural population. Although not all productive activ- ities can be considered sustainable or ecologically sound, the enormous and incred- ibly detailed local knowledge is an example of how use and conservation are simultaneously taking place. The Yucata´n Peninsula with an extension of 145,000 km2 is home to about 2500 species of plants, >3000 insect species, six species of ungulates, five felids, three primate species, 555 bird species, 24 species of amphibians, and 118 species of reptiles. These figures provide a clear idea on the importance of biodiversity of the Yucata´n Peninsular to the world but at the same time challenge the needs for documenting levels of richness of other “highly diversified” components of biodi- versity, i.e., invertebrates, fungi, and bacteria. At a wider context, natural distur- bances like hurricanes, some of them of major magnitude, and fires have an impact on biodiversity. The northern part of the Yucata´n Peninsula tends to be the most affected hurricane area. Forests have shown a remarkable resilience to these large- scale natural disturbances, but the added effects of both human-induced land use changes and natural disturbances have caused considerable changes at a variety of v vi Preface spatial scales, from local to regional scales. On top of the mentioned threats, global climate change adds another challenge to the task of land use changes and biodi- versity conservation. Drastic changes along the eastern Yucata´n coast can be observed, with tourism as the main driver of land use change. At present, 39 protected areas can be found in the Yucata´n Peninsula, a 21.6 % of the total area, which helps conservation efforts and support carbon dioxide sequestration, among many other ecosystem benefits. On the academic side, the Yucata´n Peninsula has attracted scholars since long times. Botanical, zoological explorations started in the nineteenth century, with the legacy of the ancient Maya culture as the main inspiration for many archaeologists, seeking to understand the rise and fall of this Mesoamerican high culture. The increasing demand on a “fresh view” on the regional biodiversity and conservation convinced us to offer a book on a wide stream of important biological conservation topics. Our aim was, in close collaboration with 46 authors from twenty different institutions, to offer a comprehensive overview on the knowledge on biodiversity and conservation of the Yucata´n Peninsula. Few studies have integrated state-of- the-art accounts on ecology, biodiversity, and conservation of the Yucata´n Penin- sula, and in some others future tasks and research needs have been identified. We hope that this book will be useful not only to ecologists, conservation biologists, and decision makers but also to postgraduate students, lecturers, and teachers, encouraging further research, supporting conservation of this and other areas in the tropics and subtropics. The high rate of conversion of tropical moist forest to secondary forest makes it imperative to evaluate forest metric relationships of species dependent on primary, old-growth forest. The threatened Northern Mealy Amazon (Amazona guatemalae) is the largest mainland parrot, and occurs in tropical moist forests of Mesoamerica that are increasingly being converted to secondary forest. However, the consequences of forest conversion for this recently taxonomically separated parrot species are poorly understood. We measured forest metrics of primary evergreen, riparian, and secondary tropical moist forest in Los Chimalapas, Mexico. We also used point counts to estimate density of Northern Mealy Amazons in each forest type during the nonbreeding (Sept 2013) and breeding (March 2014) seasons. We then examined how parrot density was influenced by forest structure and composition, and how parrots used forest types within tropical moist forest.

Contributions from the United States National Herbarium, volume 49: 152 pages (including 42 figures).—Recent fieldwork in Bolivia has resulted in the recognition of 180 species in 36 genera of Acanthaceae. The purpose of this taxonomic treatment is to discuss, in alphabetical order, all the known Bolivian species of the family, and as such, this work is a ready reference for botanists, so that they may identify their collections of acanthaceous plants or use the keys for detecting further undescribed species. Except for brief discussions to indicate possible relationships of the novelties to allied species, no phylogenetic inferences within the family have been made. A full list of synonyms for the Bolivian species and those of adjoining countries has been prepared. Keys, species descriptions, and specimen distribution data is provided. When available, illustrations, ecological and conservation data have been included. Two new species of Dicliptera, D. palmariensis and D. purpurascens are described and illustrated, and Lepidagathis alverezia is a new combination. This ecosystem can be found from Baja California Norte to Chiapas on the eastern coast of the country. On the Gulf of Mexico side it grows from Tamaulipas to Yucatan. This is an ecosystem that is home to a wide diversity of plants, which include 114 tree species. These species lose their leaves for long periods of time during the year. This plant community prospers at altitudes varying from sea level up to 1700 meters, in a wide range of soil conditions. Studies regarding land attributes with full identification of tree species are scarce in Mexico. However, documenting the tree species composition of this ecosystem, and the environment conditions where it develops is good beginning to assess the diversity that can be found there. A geo- graphical information system overlapping 4 layers of information was applied to define ecological units as a basic element that combines a series of homogeneous biotic and environmental factors that define specific growing conditions for several plant species. These ecological units were sampled to document tree species diversity in a land track of 4662 ha, known as “Arroyo Cuenca la Quebrada” located at Tomatlan, Jalisco.

RESUMEN La riqueza biológica de Mesoamérica es enorme. Dentro de esta gran área geográfi ca se encuentran algunos de los ecosistemas más diversos del planeta (selvas tropicales), así como varios de los principales centros de endemismo en el mundo (bosques nublados). Países como Guatemala, en esta gran área biogeográfi ca, tiene grandes zonas de bosque húmedo tropical y bosque mesófi lo, por esta razón es muy importante para analizar la diversidad en la región. Lamentablemente, la fauna de mariposas de Guatemala es poco conocida y por lo tanto, es necesario llevar a cabo un estudio y análisis de la composición y la diversidad de las mariposas (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) en Guatemala.

Data are from 12 years field experience in the country and from Museums specimens. Some new species records are added to Ecuadorian fauna and it is presumed that at least a 10% more of new records will be obtained in the near future. Ecuadorian Pieridae, although in the past many taxa were described from this country, are far from being thoroughly known. One of the most prolific author was Hewitson (1852-1877; 1869-1870; 1870; 1877) who described many species from the collections made by Buckley and Simons . Some of the "Ecuador” citations by Hewitson are pointed out more precisely by the same author (Hewit ­ son , 1870) in his index to the list of species collected by Buckley in remote areas uneasily reached even to-day (V ane -Wright, 1991). An important contribution on Lepidoptera of Ecuador is given by Dognin (1887-1896) who described and listed many new species collected by Gaujon in the Loja area, where typical amazonian and páramo species are included.
