During the summer of 2001 at Konza Prairie Bio- logical Station, Kansas, we videotaped a gray catbird that broke and consumed at least 1 egg in a brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum) nest. Our observation was consistent with egg predation because the catbird consumed the contents of the damaged egg after breaking it. The large difference in body mass suggests that a catbird (37 g) destroying eggs in a thrasher (69 g) nest might risk injury if caught in the act of predation and might explain why egg predation by catbirds has been poorly documented. Our observation indicated that the catbird should be considered as an egg predator of natural nests and that single-egg predation of songbird nests should not be attributed to egg removal by female brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater) without additional evidence. INTRODUCTION The project “Evidence-based and policy coherent Oceans Economy and Trade Strategies” aims to support developing countries such as Barbados, Belize and Costa Rica, in realizing trade and economic benefits from the sustainable use of marine resources within the framework of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). This data factsheet presents detailed sectorial information of one (of the four) ocean sectors selected in Belize to facilitate the identification and informed selection of key sectors to be considered for the next phase of the project: Sector 1 Sector 2 Sector 3 Sector 4 Marine fisheries Aquaculture Seafood manufacturing Tourism 1.1. THE MARITIME TOURISM SECTOR Tourism is the largest of all ocean economic sectors, generating more than a USD 1.6 trillion globally in 2017. International tourist arrivals grew by 7% reaching a record of 1,323 million arrivals in 2017. It is expected that international arrivals will reach to 1.8 trillion by 2030 (UNWTO, 2018), outperforming all other services sectors with perhaps the exception of financial services. Tourism is also the sector that contributes the most to the GDP of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), but also of coastal developing countries. These countries enjoy a special geographical situation, outstanding natural endowments and cultural heritage richness that make them unique for visitors. At the same time, they confront several challenges and vulnerabilities including remoteness, low connectivity, limited economic diversification, small internal markets, as well as adverse, perhaps recurrent climate events. -

But the species is on the increase: of 107 reports accepted by the California Bird Records Committee 1884–1999, one third were in just the last four years of this interval. Similarly, of the 20 records of the Gray Catbird in San Diego County, 10 have come since initiation of the field work for this atlas in 1997. Foster Audrey Barker Plotkin Brian Hall INTRODUCTION Disturbance is a continual though varying theme in the history of the Yucatán Peninsula. Ancient Maya civilizations cleared and modified much of the forested landscape for millennia, and then abruptly abandoned large areas nearly 1,000 years ago, allowing forests of native species to reestablish and mature (Turner 1974; Hodell, Curtis, and Brenner 1995). More recently, late twentieth century population growth has fueled a resurgence of land-use activity including logging, slash-and-burn agriculture, large mechanized agricultural projects, tourism, and urban expansion (Turner et al. 2001; Turner, Geoghegan, and Foster 2002). Throughout this lengthy history, fires have affected the region—ignited purposefully or accidentally by humans, and occasionally by lightning (Lundell 1940; Snook 1998). And, as indicated by ancient Maya records, historical accounts, and contemporary observations, intense winds associated with hurricanes have repeatedly damaged forests and human settlements (Wilson 1980; Morales 1993). Konrad ABSTRACT The ecological stress factor of hurricanes is examined as a dimension of pre-Hispanic Maya adaptation to a tropical forest habitat in the Yucatan peninsula. Pre-Hispanic, colonial and contemporary texts as well as climatic data from the Caribbean region support the thesis that the hurricane was an integral feature of the pre-Hispanic Maya cosmology and ecological paradigm. The author argues that destruction of forests by tropical storms and subsequent succession cycles mimic not only swidden —"slash- and-burn"— agriculture, but also slower, natural succession cycles. With varying degrees of success, flora and fauna adapt to periodic, radical ecosystem disruption in the most frequently hard-hit areas. While not ignoring more widely-discussed issues surrounding the longevity and decline of pre-Hispanic Maya civilization, such as political development, settlement patterns, migration, demographic stability, warfare and trade, the author suggests that effective adaptation to the ecological effects of tropical storms helped determine the success of pre-Hispanic Herman W.
