TOURISM IN WARSAW REPORT 2018 Introduction 2 Key data 3 1. Warsaw – selected social and economic information 4 2. Accessibility 8 3. Tourist accommodation 12 4. Tourist attractions 16 5. Attractions off the beaten track 20 6. Tourist traffic characteristics 24 7. Meetings industry 28 8. Warsaw’s image 32 Sources 36 Warsaw’s pulse beats to the rhythm of its residents: not only in the city centre but in all 18 districts of the capital. Each one is a mosaic of colourful vibes, authentic stories and unique tastes. Within these districts we are witnessing a revitalisation of post- industrial spaces, the development of new estates and attractions as well as the creation of business and recreation zones. The former industrial districts of Wola and Powiśle are undergoing change; the former “Koneser” vodka distillery in Praga district has transformed into a modern space where all types of outdoor events take place and are open to all. Warsaw’s residents more often spend time outside the city centre and value the variety and atmosphere of all Warsaw’s districts, and in so doing, inspire those visiting the capital to discover places off the beaten track. A popular meeting place is beside the River Vistula: one can relax here along the modern boulevards and well-kept beaches, do sport or explore the “wild” bank, which is a part of the protected “Natura 2000” network. It is easy to relax outdoors in any of Warsaw’s dozens of green squares, parks and gardens which regularly host a variety of events including the popular breakfast markets and ‘eco bazaars’, in line with the worldwide trend in health and an ecological lifestyle.

  • Syrenka Tattoos
SYRENKA TATTOOS Personal Interpretations of Warsaw’s Symbol [Received 23rd February 2018, accepted 15th May 2018, DOI: 10.21463/shima.12.2.13] Jacek Wasilewski University of Warsaw <[email protected]> Agata Kostrzewa University of Warsaw <[email protected]> ABSTRACT: The Mermaid of Warsaw – known in Polish as the Syrenka - is the principal feature of the city’s coat of arms. In recent years it has also become popular with residents as a tattoo design that has civic, community and individual significance. This article analyses a selection of Syrenka-inspired tattoos inscribed on the bodies of city residents. Although approximately 90% of the images addressed conform to the classic model of the Syrenka, with regards to the position of the figure’s sword and shield, in most other aspects the tattoos differ significantly from the one featured the coat of arms, referencing other images of the Syrenka scattered throughout the city. As such, these tattoos represent more than simple homages to the city’s emblem; they evidence a sentimental bond with the community of Warsaw and express the tattooed individuals’ commitments to and attitudes toward their metropolitan locale. KEYWORDS: Mermaid, Syrenka, Warsaw, tattoos, semiotics Introduction Warsaw is located in east-central Poland on the Vistula River, which rises in the south of the country and drains into the Vistula Lagoon via a delta and directly into the Baltic Sea via several direct channels (Figure 1). The city has its antecedence in riverbank settlements that date back to the 9th Century. Warsaw has served as the nation’s capital since 1596 and its current population of is just over 1.75 million.

  • Ladies and Gentlemen! When 13 Years Ago Warsaw Began Its Adventure with the Long Night of Museums, 11 Venues Took Part in the Event – All of Them Museums
Ladies and Gentlemen! When 13 years ago Warsaw began its adventure with the Long Night of Museums, 11 venues took part in the event – all of them museums. This year, more than 250 institutions invite visitors. Despite this multitude and diversity, the Long Night of Museums has not lost its basic and founding character – popularizing museum collections. On this year’s Long Night of Museums, on 14th May, 52 museums will be open. They are the main axis of this cultural event, during which visitors may watch permanent exhibitions or showcases prepared specially for this occasion. The idea to allow venues unrelated with culture to participate in the Long Night of Museums was born in 2009 and has received very positive feedback from visitors. However, statistics shows that it is museums that nighttime guests visit the most. Indeed, attendance records reaching 10 or 15 thousand visitors during one evening are held by Warsaw-based museums. I heartily invite you to the Long Night of Museums 2016. This year, one more time, there will be plenty of attractions and specially prepared events waiting for visitors. The guidebook will allow you to learn more about them. See you on 14th May! Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz Mayor of Warsaw 25 Zespół Stacji Filtrów 32 Teatr Powszechny — ŚRÓDMIEŚCIE Williama Lindleya im.
