I first met Nick Drake when I arrived in London after attending the Isle of Wight Pop Festival in 1969, which featured as its curtain-closer a very different Bob Dylan to the one I had seen in Sydney in March 1966. However, on thinking about it, Dylan’s more scaled down eclectic country music approach - which he revealed for the first time - kind of prepared me for what I was about to experience in London. The day after I arrived at my temporary London lodgings with friends living in Warwick Avenue, I went to Les Cousins in Greek Street.

  • Nick Drake and the Baroque Characteristics of His Music Mckendrick Bearden
Nick Drake and the Baroque Characteristics of His Music McKendrick Bearden This paper was written for Dr. Callaway’s Music History course. Born in the British Colony of Burma in 1948 and brought up in the English countryside of Warwickshire, Nick Drake has become one of the most influential and celebrated folk artists of the twentieth century. Strangely enough, the popularity his music enjoys now was not gained until thirty years after his death in 1974. In his music we find the use of extremely unusual guitar tunings, pastoral and simplistic lyrics, beautiful melodies, and an extraordinary high emotional level that has evoked responses from many who have written about his work. He is now known as one of the most important folk singer/ songwriters to have ever lived, though much of his music sets him apart from the contemporary folk artists the 20th century. Nick Drake has influenced countless musicians and songwriters since his early passing, and the reason for his influence may well lie in the characteristics and influences of his songs that make them so different from other folk artists of era. Trevor Dann discusses his influences as “avant-garde jazz, classical music, especially choral music, what we’d now call ‘world music’, and the blues” (p.13). Many articles and reviews describe his music as having a baroque quality or influence. Whether it is referring to the string arrangements in several of his songs or the sweeping orchestral quality of his guitar, most commentators never fail to observe a Baroque tinge. Nick Drake’s first album Five Leaves Left introduced listeners to his ornate guitar accompaniments and baroque orchestrations that are now synonymous with his work.

  • Keith James Nick Drake
KEITH JAMES with RICK FOOT Double Bass THE SONGS OF NICK DRAKE www.keith-james.com www.songsofnickdrake.com “A fresh and powerful approach to these wonderful songs” Patrick Humphries – Nick Drake biographer During January, February and March 2007 singer/songwriter Keith James performs his eighth UK tour entitled The Songs of Nick Drake, in which almost the entire concert is dedicated to the work of the most loved of all English singer/songwriters. Previous tours across the country, totalling over 250 concerts, have seen audiences filling arts centres and theatres to hear this music again after an absence from the live music scene of well over 30 years. Nick Drake himself, was, during his prolific period, somewhat of a mystery. He only lived to record 3 albums, "Five Leaves Left", "Bryter Later" and "Pink Moon", all of which were regarded at the time as being flimsy and without the substance that was called for to engage popular audiences. It has only been in the last 10 years that many thousands of listeners have come to appreciate their beauty. Nick Drake has now, thankfully, become the most revered of all figures to take their place in the world of contemporary acoustic music. It is with this in mind that these concerts are presented. About Keith James Although Keith is still, in some respects, a well kept secret, he has recently seen a gradual emergence as one of the country's most valuable singer/songwriters, and concert performers. Born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, Keith spent his early years in Surrey and Berkshire where, during the early eighties, he performed hundreds of times in what was then a healthy circuit of wine bars.

  • N a Herança Lírica De Nick Drake
Palavras-chave: Performance, Poesia, Música, Nick Drake, Roland Barthes Abstract: Most part of Nick Drake’s songs seems to use melody as a vehicle of a vocal message which, almost every time, ends up showing as the main character of the song. The fact that there are almost no visual registers of his performances forces to rethink the concept of poetical performance, in which body assumes protagonism as the transmission vehicle of the word. Simultaneously, the significance of the same text seems to be substantially changed in function of the melodic signs in the song. Concerning this, Nick Drake’s 113work seems to be enlightening of the concept “grain of the voice”, presented by Roland Barthes. Keywords: Performance, Poetry, Music, Nick Drake, Roland Barthes , 10, 12/2017: 141-154 – ISSN 2182-8954 | http://dx.doi.org/10.21747/21828954/ely10a6 141 Alexandre Costa I came into music because I thought the presentation of poetry wasn’t vibrant enough.
