  • Vincent Peirani Vincent Peirani
VINCENT PEIRANI "What this NiceNice----bornborn Parisian teases out of his accordion is somethsomethinging the likes of which world has never heard before. The great French accordion tradition, from Galliano to Matinier, shines through, but he takes it further with a nenenew,ne w, characteristic expressiveness. It is a future vivirtuosortuoso that is playing here!" says the SüddeutscheSüddeutsche Zeitung newspaper. The French accordionist, vocalist and composer Vincent Peirani was born in Nice on 24.4.1980. He started playing the accordion at the age of eleven. One year later he began taking lessons in classical music for clarinet and accordion at the "Conservatoire National de Région" in Nice, and it didn't take long for his gift to start showing. Between 1994 and 1998, as a teenager, he won numenumerorousus international awards and competitions for clasclassisicalcal accordion, including the Klingenthaler Accordion Competition (Germany), the award of the accordion festival in Castelfidardo (Italy), the "Trophée Mondial at Cassino" (Italy) and the international "Reinach" accordion competition (Switzerland). The highlight of these accolades was the first place in the competition for classical accordion at the "Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique" in Paris in 1996. These early successes quickly enabled Vincent Peirani to appear at festivals all around Europe (Bayreuth, Salzburg, Vienna, Rome, Stockholm). At 16 he discovered jazz ––– in particular the music of Bill Evans and the FrencFrenchh jazzjazz----rockrock band "Sixun" ––– and in 2001 he began his formal studies of jazz at tthehe "Conservatoire"Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique" in Paris. Initially he garnered more scepticism than anything else with his instrument, the accordion, and his classical background, but it didn't take long before he won the critics over with a whole new way of looking at the accordion, and made himself a name in France's jazz scene as well.

  • Angelo Verploegen FLUGELHORN Wim Bronnenberg ELECTRIC GUITAR Jasper Van Hulten DRUMS a Personal Note on the Art of Traveling Light
JL023 Angelo Verploegen FLUGELHORN Wim Bronnenberg ELECTRIC GUITAR Jasper van Hulten DRUMS A personal note on The Art Of Traveling Light or some time now I wanted to reflect musically on the travels I’ve made as a Fmusician. Ironically enough reality caught up with this idea, since at this very moment all the traveling came to a literal standstill because of the worldwide corona virus outbreak. Maybe a reason for the better for some reflection on the act of traveling? Anyway, there have been many travels over the last 35 years or so, to many places, with many different people, under very different circumstances. And they all represent the mixed feeling of melancholy, to have to leave my beloved family again, and of excitement about plunging into the unknown. And then of course there is all the inconvenience coming with the traveling itself, which I try to ease as much as I can by carry as little as possible with me: practicing the Art of Trave- ling Light. I translated traveling lightly literally into a line-up without bass, thus underlin- ing the concept of lightness and transparency in sound. Furthermore I wanted the sound of the band to be lush and warm, underlining the feel of comfort and joy in the music we were to record. Wim Bronnenberg with his 1956 Gibson L4 jazz guitar and the always utmost sensitive drummer Jasper van Hulten were the perfect companions for this project. This is my third album on Just Listen Records (after The Sweetest Sound JL009 and The Duke Book JL019) and I’m still stunned by the purest possible and most honest sound quality that producer/ engineer Jared Sacks delivers and the way it is presented by co- producer Jonas Sacks.

  • Before & After with Nasheet Waits
ACCOUNT Home > Features > Before & After with Nasheet Waits Before & After with Nasheet Waits On the virtues of his peers and the lessons of the masters UPDATED APRIL 25, 2019 – DAVID R. ADLER Billy Hart with the Cookers,Iridium, NYC 4-14 Harris Eisenstadt • • • • • asheet Waits, son of the incomparable drummer Freddie Waits, has found his greatest acclaim with pianist Jason Moran’s ceaselessly inventive trio the Bandwagon. But he’s also had a major N impact on the scene as a member of Tarbaby, Ralph Alessi’s Baida Quartet, Tony Malaby’s Tamarindo, David Murray’s InTnity Quartet, Dave Douglas’ Brass Ecstasy, Avishai Cohen’s Triveni, Amir ElSaffar’s Two Rivers Ensemble and many others. Stopping by for a listening session in late summer, Waits, 43, lent us his generous, wide-open ears and got to the heart of what he values as a drummer. 1. Jim Black AlasNoAxis “Tockle” (from Antiheroes, Winter & Winter). Black, drums; Chris Speed, tenor saxophone; Hilmar Jensson, guitar; Skúli Sverrisson, bass. Recorded in 2012. BEFORE: It’s reminding me of [Tony] Malaby a little bit. And something about the drums is reminding me of Tom [Rainey]. But I’m not sure who it is. AFTER: Oh, OK, Jim-that makes sense! I see Jim out there on the road a lot, and I’m a big fan of his playing, but I haven’t heard a lot of his recordings. I’ve seen him live quite often. Wow, that’s a great album cover. He’s one of those consummate musicians-I’ve seen him at the piano.
