It’s year 10 work experience week! It is Year 10 Work Experience this week Monday 5th – 9th March. All of our year 10 students are working with local and national businesses to gain real life work experience.

Big thanks to our Employer Partners across Manchester for giving our students the chance to come and work with them. am sure our students will come back inspired and determined to succeed.

Vin Hawke is an actor and composer, known for The Terror (2018) and Lancaster Skies (2018). He spent the day with our TV and Film students delivering a workshop on how to work with actors, what to expect and how to get the best out of actors when filming them.

Our students really enjoyed his inspirational master class.

Multi award winning film maker writer and director from Manchester Jason Wingard popped into UTC on Monday 26th February to show our students his new comedy film called ‘Eaten by Lions’. The 90min film was directed by Jason and starred well-known comedy actors such as Jonny Vegas. Our students had the opportunity to watch his film and give him constructive feedback.

UTC Media City Student Nye Smith worked on a film project last summer, and it has just been nominated for a ‘Best Live Action’ award at the Into Film awards 2018.

‘Underpass’ was shot and edited within 11 days by young people and as you can see from the poster Nye Smith was credited for his film making expertise.

UTC Live Lounge

We had the ‘Jet Reds’ in our Live Lounge on Tuesday 27th February. They performed a 45 minute acoustic set followed by a 30 minute . For the first time ever our students produced the live show broadcast from UTC outside the TV and Film studios. The live stream was played on the UTC YouTube channel and our social media platforms. Students will create content and produce show reels from this set.

We met with Kris from City Radio on Wednesday 28th February. Kris and some other volunteers from Salford City Radio are keen to work with our students in our audio room. Our students will have the opportunity to meet with these radio specialists each week to create content for this well- known Manchester radio station. Watch this space for dates and times to get involved.

Our TV & Film students teamed up with the BBC to film live discussions and debates at their Sustainability Season within Media City UK. Our students gained unique access to the BBC studios from Monday 26th February to 1st March to carry out filming and interviews at each event and workshop. Sustainability Season showcased current pledges through a series of seminars, workshops and campaigns which were captured by our Film & TV students.

Our students will now edit their work into 30 second bite size pops that will be shared with .

Beyond Bionic

A new BBC Children’s series called Beyond Bionic filmed one of their challenges on our roof top!

Action adventurer Andy Torbet took on one of the biggest challenges of his life as he attempted to match the super- skills of nature’s super heroes.

Our students were able to watch the BBC film this challenge, to get a real life insight into the TV & Film industry at its best.

World Book Day Thursday 1st March

World Book Day is a celebration! It’s a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading.

Our students dressed up as their favourite book character to celebrate reading across UTC Media City UK.

Our amazing Y13 TV & Film students managed to grab an interview with Sir Ben Ainslie. He is the most successful sailor in Olympic history. Ainslie won medals at five consecutive Olympics from 1996 onwards, including gold at the four Games held between 2000 and 2012. He is the first person to win medals in five different Olympic Games in sailing, the third person to win five Olympic medals in that sport. Their interview will be edited into a short 30 second to one minute clip that will hopefully be used by the BBC. The girls were super professional on their approach to questioning, which created superb content. Phoebe Potter, Year 13, who led the interview, said “I loved every minute at the BBC; I was able to get up close and personal to well known TV and sports stars. I obviously want to work in this industry so I was there to impress the industry professionals. I was pushed out of my comfort zone but stepped up to the challenge and feel proud of myself for getting an awesome interview with this Olympic legend”

The Pitch – tell us your story ideas

'The Pitch' is a chance for young people aged 11-18 to suggest an idea for a story or report to BBC . If you've got a great idea programme like Radio 1's or CBBC , they might come and make it with you and put it on the television, radio, online or social media. Perhaps you've got an idea for a personal story - about you or a friend or member of your family? Maybe there's something unique happening in your community that you think more people should know about? Or is there an issue you are passionate about that you would like the BBC to share with a wider audience? Whatever your story idea is, we want to hear it - tell us why the subject matters to you and some suggestions about how you would like to tell it to a BBC audience. And don't forget the BBC tells stories in many different ways, including audio diaries, discussions, animation, video reports and short digital films which we share on our social media platforms. Contact our English department here at UTC Media City UK for more information.

Open Evening went down a storm! We held our year 10 and year 12 Open Evening on Thursday 1st March. Despite the horrendous , freezing cold weather, leaks in our building, boiler issues, we managed to meet and greet families who had travelled from all across Manchester and beyond to see our fantastic facilities. We showcased our college, delivering interactive TV & Film workshops, eSports live show, opened up our live lounge to show students’ musical talent. Our staff explained the aim of the UTC and gave parents and young people information on each of the courses we offer. Because of the issues with the weather, we will be holding an additional Open Evening this month. Details will be published in this newsletter and on social media.
