ABSTRACT The landscapes and material remains of the Holocaust survive in various forms as physical reminders of the suffering and persecution of this period in European history. However, whilst clearly defined historical narratives exist, many of the archaeological remnants of these sites remain ill-defined, unrecorded and even, in some cases, unlocated. Such a situation has arisen as a result of a number of political, social, ethical and religious factors which, coupled with the scale of the crimes, has often inhibited systematic search. This thesis will outline how a non- invasive archaeological methodology has been implemented at two case study sites, with such issues at its core, thus allowing them to be addressed in terms of their scientific and historical value, whilst acknowledging their commemorative and religious significance. -

Biography of Franz Stangl (1908-1971) Childhood and Early Life Franz Stangl was born on March 26, 1908 in a small town in Austria called Almunster. His father worked as a night watchman, and believed that Stangl was not his child (implying his wife cheated on him). Stangl was petrified of his father because he was continually beaten by him. When Stangl was eight years old his father died of malnutrition, and a year later his mother re- married. When he was fourteen, his step-father wanted him to leave school and work at a local steel mill. At fifteen, he left school and became an apprentice weaver. He finished his apprenticeship in three years and when he was eighteen and a half became the youngest master weaver in Australia. At twenty-three years old he discovered there was no further career advancement, so he applied for a job with the police force, as he was always attracted to the job of policemen, liking the safety and security it represented. Several months later he was told to report to the Kaplanhof (police training barracks in Linz) for training where he started out as a rookie for the Austrian police force, working as a traffic policeman and on the riot squad. He volunteered for ‘special duties’, which included in participating in street battles in Linz against socialists. He earned a silver medal for removing socialists from a local Cinema where they had been entrenched. In 1934, the Nazi’s assassinated the Chancellor of Austria, but it was clear that the Austrian police criticized this action. -

Jahrhundert gilt als das Jahrhundert des Genozids, der Lager, des Totalen Krieges, des Totalitarismus und Ter- rorismus, von Flucht, Vertreibung und Staatsterror – ge- rade weil sie im Einzelnen allesamt zutreffen, hinterlassen diese Charakterisierungen in ihrer Summe eine eigentüm- liche Ratlosigkeit. Zumindest spiegeln sie eine nachhaltige Desillusionierung. Die Vorstellung, Gewalt einhegen, be- grenzen und letztlich überwinden zu können, ist der Ein- sicht gewichen, dass alles möglich ist, jederzeit und an jedem Ort der Welt. Und dass selbst Demokratien, die Erben der Aufklärung, vor entgrenzter Gewalt nicht gefeit sind. Das normative und ethische Bemühen, die Gewalt einzugrenzen, mag vor diesem Hintergrund ungenügend und mitunter sogar vergeblich erscheinen. Hinfällig ist es aber keineswegs, es sei denn um den Preis der moralischen Selbstaufgabe. Ausgewählt von drei namhaften Historikern – Jörg Baberowski, Bernd Greiner und Michael Wildt –, präsen- tieren die »Studien zur Gewaltgeschichte des 20. Jahrhun- derts« die Forschungsergebnisse junger Wissenschaftle- rinnen und Wissenschaftler. Die Monografien analysieren am Beispiel von totalitären Systemen wie dem National- sozialismus und Stalinismus, von Diktaturen, Autokratien und nicht zuletzt auch von Demokratien die Dynamik ge- walttätiger Situationen, sie beschreiben das Erbe der Ge- walt und skizzieren mögliche Wege aus der Gewalt. These mass murders were allegedly perpetrated at the Sobibór “death” camp in east- ern Poland. According to mainstream historiography, 170,000 to 250,000 Jews were exterminated there in gas chambers between 1942 and 1943. The corpses were buried in mass graves and later incinerated on an open-air pyre. But do these serious claims really stand up to scrutiny? In Sobibor: Holocaust Propaganda and Reality, the official version of what transpired at Sobibór is put under the microscope. It is shown that the histori- ography of the camp is not based on solid evidence, but on the selective use of eyewitness testimonies, which in turn are riddled with contradictions and out- right absurdities. This book could exonerate John Demjanjuk. For more than half a century, mainstream Holocaust historians made no real attempts to muster material evidence for their claims about Sobibór. Finally, in the 21st century, professional historians carried out an archeological survey at the former camp site. Their findings—and the findings of many oth- ers—are here presented in detail and fatal implications for the extermination camp theory are revealed. Festschrift für Brigitte Bailer, Wien 2012 91 Peter Black Odilo Globocnik, Nazi Eastern Policy, and the Implementation of the Final Solution During the spring of 1943, while on an inspection tour of occupied Poland that included a briefing on the annihilation of the Polish Jews, SS Personnel Main Office chief Maximilian von Herff characterized Lublin District SS and Police Leader and SS-Gruppenführer Odilo Globocnik, in the following way: “A man fully charged with all possible light and dark sides. Little concerned with ap- pearances, fanatically obsessed with the task, [he] engages himself to the limit without concern for health or superficial recognition. His energy drives him of- ten to breach existing boundaries and to forget the boundaries established for him within the [SS-] Order – not out of personal ambition, but much more for the sake of his obsession with the matter at hand. His success speaks unconditionally for him.”1 Von Herff’s analysis of Globocnik’s reflected a consistent pattern in the ca- reer of the Nazi Party organizer and SS officer, who characteristically atoned for his transgressions of the National Socialist code of behavior by fanatical pursuit and implementation of core Nazi goals.2 Globocnik was born to Austro-Croat parents on April 21, 1904 in multina- tional Trieste, then the principal seaport of the Habsburg Monarchy. His father’s family had come from Neumarkt (Tržič), in Slovenia. Franz Globocnik served as a Habsburg cavalry lieutenant and later a senior postal official; he died of pneumonia on December 1, 1919. -

The present dissertation attempts to provide a theology of grace that would enable twenty-first century postmoderns to meaningfully relate to the Christian tradition. A theological interface accomplishing the transposition of the theology and categories of the traditional account of grace into ones accessible to twenty-first century westerners is therefore constructed. By means of the study of landmark literary, philosophical and theological works on Auschwitz produced by individuals who directly suffered it, an attempt at monitoring the human (and ultimately postmodern) condition, experience and evolution (in themselves and in relation to the transcendent) through time from before, through the event and up to the experience of renewed freedom is made. This is followed by the consideration of the reality of grace as it has been experienced, reflected upon and understood by western Christianity. -

Fluharty 2 Each person surviving the Holocaust has their own personal narrative. A great number of these narratives have been written; many have been published. It is important for personal accounts to be told by each survivor, as each narrative brings a different perspective to the combined history. Knowing this, I dedicate my research to the narratives I was unable to read, whether they were simply unavailable or, unfortunately, unwritten. More importantly, this research is dedicated to those whose stories will never be told. 3 In his book Man’s Search for Meaning, Viktor Frankl states that a human being is able to withstand any condition if there is sufficient meaning to his existence, a theme which permeates the entire work. 1 For a significant number of people, the right to this search for meaning was denied by a Holocaust which took the lives of an undetermined number of European Jews, war criminals, homosexuals, Gypsies, children, and mentally or physically handicapped persons. This denial of humanness was an essential component of Adolph Hitler’s plan to elevate the Aryan nation and rid the world of undesirables. In spite of laws which dictated human associations, through the triumph of the human spirit, certain prisoners of the Nazi ghettos, labor camps, and death camps were able to survive. Many of these survivors have graced the academic and public world with a written account of their experiences as prisoners of the Nazis. -

Deshalb sind Publikationen wie die vorliegende, die eine wertvolle Hilfe zur Auseinan- dersetzung mit diesem Thema im Unterricht darstellt, sehr wichtig. Diese Veröffentlichung beinhaltet sowohl die Ergebnisse neuer wissenschaftlich fundierter Untersuchungen als auch pädagogische Konzepte, die um eine für Jugendliche verständliche Beschäftigung mit dem Thema bemüht sind; Betroffenheitspädagogik allein würde den Aufgaben politischer Bildung nicht gerecht. Eine politische Bildung, die um ein die Menschenrechte ach- tendes, demokratisches Denken und Handeln in unserer heutigen Gesell- schaft bemüht ist, muß im Sinne des Grundsatzerlasses auch um eine kriti- sche Auseinandersetzung mit der Vergangenheit bemüht sein. Nur so kann dem Weiterwirken historischer Denk- und Einstellungsmuster,
