Sometimes we have to make changes at short notice so the only way to be really sure of what’s going on is to come to church! -- 3 -- Jeremy writes... The autumn is a time of endings and beginnings, to my mind much more so than the New Year. At its start the summer holidays come to an end and children return to school, some start for the first time. Even for those without children there is a tangible change in tone as the roads are busier at different times, the town centres that little bit quieter during the day, and so on. A few weeks later and we mark harvest with our celebrations giving thanks for the crops gathered in and, nowadays, for all that people offer in their providing for the many daily needs of a modern society. We see around us an agricultural industry that seems to lurch from crisis to crisis, yet which contrasts heavily with the seeming changelessness of the British countryside; a contrast which is more than a little naïve. Moving on we come to the festivals of All Hallows and All Souls; celebrated by most as a rather banal Halloween, but used by Christians as an occasion to remember all those loved ones who have died and we still miss. It is a time to mourn afresh and have our faith restored in a hope which is yet to come. And then we arrive at November. On Remembrance Sunday we recall all those who have given their utmost for the safety and freedoms we enjoy so blithely today. I am struck each year as we read out the lists of names, held in trust for the whole community by our churches of those who were killed, that these lists represent not just the deaths of individuals, but of a way of life. So many were lost from communities like ours that victorious Britannia could never be the same again. So much good came from their sacrifice, yet we still pay a price to this day. Sadly 100 years of remembering seem to have done little to diminish our human folly with regards to conflict. Yet we must remember those who offered us so much by surrendering everything. Finally, as everyone around us joins the mad rush of Christmas preparation – as we do to, let’s be honest – the Church celebrates its New Year. Advent is not just a time to switch to a new set of Sunday readings, nor a handy four week warning if the impending celebration. Advent is also a time for new starts. It tells of the story of God’s new start for the human race. After the futility of humanity straining to reach God through the devices of religious laws and holy kings and lands, God finally breaks through to humanity and a -- 4 -- new story begins. Advent recounts the beginning of that story and takes us to the wonderful mystery of Christmas. So that’s the Autumn: A time of endings and beginnings. And, a time to remember and give thanks to and for those who have made these transitions possible; thank you then to all who nurture children and who teach them; thank you to all who farm our lands and bring us food to eat; thank you to all who decorate our churches for their celebrations; thank you to all who have touched our lives for good and whom we will remember; thank you to the many who went to fight for our freedoms; and, thank you God that you overcame whatever anger, sadness and frustration you must have felt at humanities repeated folly in order to send your Son into this world and offer to everyone a truly new beginning. Jeremy

Julian Meetings usually take place on the second Monday of each month, 7.30 for 7.45pm at St Gregory’s Church Centre, Colyford Road, Seaton. We are a small group who meet regularly in order to grow in the practice of Contemplative Prayer in the Christian tradition. Julian Meetings welcome people of ALL denominations, or none. For more information contact: Sue Price, Reader at St Gregory’s Seaton on 01297 22314, or Liz Molony at St Michael’s Beer.

“Questions of Life & Faith” - Meetings once a month on the first Thursday of each month from 2 to 3.30 in St Gregory’s Centre. Anyone is very welcome to come along and it doesn’t need to be a permanent commitment as each week stands alone. It helps if there is some continuity and knowledge of what has been shared but new questions arise all the time as we think about the world and our life of faith. If this is of interest then note the date in your diary and turn up on the day; no advance booking is needed. Karen Curnock

-- 6 -- Beer WI NEWS LETTER November 2018 Most of the autumn/winter activities are up and running and as the weather, after some beautiful late autumn warmth, is starting to turn colder, we have plenty to keep us occupied. Our October speaker, had many interesting tales to tell of her time behind her family show ground and fairground stalls – at times a hard life but one of many varied experiences. Our November speaker is Hilary Dawson, a local vicar whom some of you may know and she is going to talk about her clerical life as a woman. The Autumn Group meeting, when we get together with our local group WIs was hosted by and Whitford. The new President of Federation, Carmen Luscombe, gave the keynote speech and she entertained us with her experiences of coming to form Jamaica as one of the “Windrush generation” and talked of her work in the caring professions, which included time in Africa accompanying her husband on a ministry posting. Seventeen members attended and we had a very successful afternoon as Penny Stopher won the food competition with her Jamaican Ginger Cake, one table of our members won the quiz and we scooped several raffle prizes! We will be selling one more batch of bamboo cups in the run up to Christmas, so bear them in mind for Christmas gifts. Talking of which, seats are being booked for our annual Over 65s Christmas Lunch party* on Thursday December 6th, so if you have not yet booked your free place, see the form in this magazine and return it to the Post Office in Beer as soon as possible, as capacity is limited. (The post Office has a few spare forms). We had an excellent lunch outing to the Bistro on a lovely day when we could enjoy the Lyme bay views whilst eating our tasty lunches. We also enjoyed a walk to Woodbury Common and have helped with a beach clean to assist Beer Village Heritage put the Foundation Centre into winter mode. You are very welcome to come as a guest (£4 fee) to any of the talks and if you are considering joining the WI in the new year you can come to the next two meetings free of charge. See our noticeboard in the village for full details of events. Editor: See page 21 * -- 7 -- Beer Film Societywww.beerfilmsociety.org.uk Monday 12th November at Steamers “Frantz” Cert. 12 To coincide with the centenary of World War One we have chosen an appropriate and timely viewing of this dramatic story set in the aftermath of the war . A young German, who grieves the death of her fiancé in France, meets a mysterious Frenchman who visits the fiancé's grave to lay flowers.

Prior to the screening, Richard Scott will talk briefly about the project to commemorate the action and sacrifices of the villagers of Beer and the plan to plant an avenue of trees in their memory. With wonderful, understated acting and photography and full of surprises and moving twists, this is not only a historical anti war story but a bitter-sweet love story and a portrayal of a society suffering from post-war trauma. Doors open 7pm for a 7.30pm showing. Members £4 and guests £5. All welcome. Bar and ice cream available. The proceeds from this month's raffle will be given to Richard for the commemorative project and to encourage you to purchase tickets generously there will be some higher quality prizes. COMING SOON! 3 December “Some Like It Hot” (1959) -- 8 -- BAGS (Beer Arts Group(s)) AGM The AGM was well attended on the 15th October. The Chairman, Martin Cox, reported that it had been a steady year for BAGS with a great Christmas party. A number of ad-hoc groups involving members had flourished. The Book Club continued to meet about once a month having lively & enjoyable discussions on books. Some new projects are developing for the future and planning was underway for the Christmas party to be held at Steamers on the 20th December. The treasurer, Peter Docherty, reported that the financial position of BAGS had not changed since last year. Rosemary Docherty had decided to step down as the secretary to the committee after several years of sterling work, most recently on GDPR. She was thanked by all for her valued contribution. Christine Jones was welcomed to the committee and will take up the role as secretary.

The AGM was followed by: BAGS Indian themed Evening at Steamers The Indian evening had sold out and there was a waiting list. An Oriental ambiance greeted people in the foyer which was adorned with Indian artefacts, elephants, josh sticks, dolls, cloths, cushions etc. Many people came in Indian inspired clothing adding to the fun of the evening. A delicious curry was served with side dishes which everyone very much enjoyed. This was followed by a screening of ‘Sita Sings the Blues”, an animated story of Sita and Rama. Sufficient funds were raised to cover the cost of the food and the film. A great night was had by all. -- 9 -- Seaton Beer and District Branch RNLI

Seaton Beer and District Branch RNLI held their Annual Autumn Sponsored Walk on Sunday 21st October. Opening hours to be approximately from 11am to 3pm and we will be selling our lovely RNLI Christmas cards and gifts. At the present time there are no events in our fundraising diary for November but will be attending Christmas events in December including the Seaton Christmas Carnival, Axe Yacht Club AGM, Colyton Christmas Fair, Beer Christmas Craft Fair in St. Michaels Church, Beer, and our Christmas Collection at Tesco Seaton. Thank you for your support to our branch of the RNLI Wendy Cummins Secretary, Seaton Beer and District Branch RNLI Altar Guild News More than 50 folk enjoyed a lovely harvest lunch which was held jointly with the Congregational Church on 30th September. £205 was raised for Christian Aid. Pat Edmunds is the box co-ordinator and will arrange to collect them, or they may be given to her in Church. If anybody would like to have a new box she would be pleased to help. We are not having our usual Christmas Coffee Morning this year but are raising funds at the Craft Fayre in Church at the Late Night Festival on 7th December: details next time. Date of next meeting: Tuesday 6th November 10am.

-- 11 -- Beer Parish Council Newsletter October 2018

Foul play: dog faeces are unpleasant and can present a serious health hazard, particularly to young children. Please let EDDC know if you witness an incident of dog fouling. Phone: 01395 517528 Email: [email protected] http://eastdevon.gov.uk/environmental-maintenance/dog-fouling/report- dog-fouling/ ● Across , over 300 tonnes of dog waste are collected every year from dog bins in East Devon. Probably the same again is collected along with waste from litter bins and landfill bins. We know that over 90% of dog owners will always be responsible and pick up. ● On the whole our streets, paths, beaches and parks are as clean as they have ever been. ● For those who don't pick up after their dog, we want to send you an important message. Dog fouling is one of the things that communities feel really spoils their environment and we are keen to persuade all dog owners to care enough and pick up. If you don't pick up you may put others at risk and might be committing an offence. ● You can use litter bins, dog bins and your landfill bin at home to dispose of bagged dog waste so there is no excuse not to dispose of it properly. NEVER leave bags of dogs waste in trees or hedges or on verges, paths and beaches, not even for a few minutes. ● If you see someone not picking up, you could either advise them of the requirement to do so, or you could let the Environmental Health team at EDDC know. Please provide a description of the person and their dog, and any other information that might enable us to identify them, including the time, date and location of the incident. We serve most of our fixed penalty notices as a result of information provided by the public. Your details will never be shared before we do this. ● The team will concentrate their efforts in any areas where evidence is provided of a particularly bad problem. If a highway or path needs cleaning up please contact our Streetscene colleagues on 01395 516551.

-- 12 -- Memorial Playpark: brighten up your day with a stroll and enjoy the new landscaping with a beautiful outlook. Planting courtesy of the Horticultural Society in partnership with EDDC and the colourful seating thanks to Cllr Mandy Graham and the Beer Volunteer Group. X marks the spot: Devon Air Ambulance Trust and Beer Albion Football Club joined forces to enable the football pitch to be used as an emergency night landing site. The driving force behind this initiative was Natalie Puddicombe whose diligence created the opportunity for our community to work together to fund the venture. The night landing site is now operational! Beer Beach: recycling is very important as waste has a huge negative impact on the natural environment and our enjoyment of it. Consequently, recycling bins are due to be installed on the beach ready for next season. These will enable people to 'recycle on the go', helping to increase recycling and keep our beach clean. Over-grown hedges: many of us use different paths around the village to get from A to B and the hilly terrain can make even a short trip a cardiac workout! However, there appears to be another factor we have to overcome on these journeys - overgrown hedges! We respectfully ask homeowners, particularly those adjacent public footpaths, to give their bushes and hedgerows an autumn trim. Neighbourhood Plan Referendum THURSDAY 8 NOVEMBER: it’s finally happening – all your input, ideas and recommendations have been collated and reviewed as part of the democratic process. The Plan shows how our community wants land to be used and developed in our area. Make sure you take this opportunity to see the final ‘Neighbourhood Plan’ and VOTE in the referendum to shape our parish. Check out the Neighbourhood Plan pages of the Beer Parish Council website. Ring and Ride: need to get somewhere but don’t have transport? Are you aware that Axe Valley Ring & Ride provides a service manned by volunteers, a non-profit organisation based in , to help those in the local area? Those eligible to use the service include older people, people with disabilities and people living in isolated areas with no other transport facilities. The minibus is wheelchair accessible. The driver picks up passengers from their homes and takes them into town for shopping or to use local services. A different area is covered each day and seats need to be booked in advance. For details of journeys and fares in your area, or to become a volunteer, contact them on 01404 46520

-- 13 -- The weather is so warm at the moment that it isn’t easy to remember that autumn is upon us. It’s an ideal time to enjoy walking along the coast path or through the woods. Look out for the many varieties of fungi which grow in the area. Some of the bracket fungi form amazing shapes on tree stumps or patterns on the ground. You might be lucky and find some blue/green cup fungus which will be either chlorociboria aeruginascens or chlorociboria aeruginosa both of which stain wood a beautiful blue. We have contacted the owners of most of the houses which were home to those who served in the first World War, so you will be able to see the plaques giving details of the servicemen in their windows during November. The Beer 2014 Group will have an exhibition from Friday 2nd to Monday 5th November, in the Congregational Hall, to mark the end of the War. It’ll be open from 1000 to 1630 (1200 to 1630 on Sunday). The latest art exhibition has been very successful with Colin Bentley showing his collection of paintings, including a new set of portraits of the Ambassadors, at Symondsbury. During the exhibition Kate Adie introduced a thought-provoking talk by Doug Hulyer who discussed the idea that humans are creating a new geological period: the Anthropocene. Richard Edmonds returned to Seaton to update us on his work in the Undercliff. The landslip is an extremely complicated land form and Richard is continuing to work on various models in order to understand exactly how it has been created. The Fine Foundation Centre will be open at weekends only from now until New Year. Thank you to everyone who came to help with emptying the tanks and tidying up, and who helped with the Beach Clean. Mike and Carol Green have recently helped a professor from the Natural History Museum to locate a very rare single cell algae which had previously only been found at Weston Mouth. It was a slightly different challenge from our usual fare of fossil fun for children, rock pooling and discussing rocky shores with A level students! The first Project talk will be on December 10th , so put the date in your diary. If you’d like to be involved with Beer Village Heritage, you’ll find most of our events advertised on our website - www.beervillageheritage.org.uk In addition we try to keep those on our email list informed of a variety of heritage related activities around the area. If you’d like to know more, just ask one of our Working to bring regular helpers such as Nick Jones, Mike Green, our history to life and to conserve our environment Chris Jones, Carol Green, Trevor Wood, Jean for future generations Wood, Henry Jaggers or Norah Jaggers. -- 14 -- The 100th anniversary Remembrance Beacon will be erected on Beer Head for 11th November in compliance with all the other Beacons being lit around the Coast. Beer Scouts have kindly volunteered to construct the Beacon with consent of Rick Dormor. Many thanks to both for there help. Any flammable waste, i.e. pallets ,hedge- trimmings, etc., please contact Chairman Les Andrews on 01297 21377, or Vice Chairman Glyn Holford on 07887 753305. Collection and delivery will be arranged. Hoping for your support. The Beer Branch will be holding its Christmas Dinner in Steamers on Friday 14th.December at 7pm. All members and friends welcome. Menu and cost to follow. Many thanks, Les Andrews, Chairman

First World War Exhibition 2nd to 5th November The Beer 2014 Group will be holding an exhibition in the Congregational Hall from Friday 2nd to Monday 5th November, featuring research into around a hundred men from Beer who served in the First World War. Some of the research has been undertaken by children from Beer Primary School as part of their school work. The exhibition will be open from 10am to 4.30pm, except on the Sunday, when it will not open until midday. Admission is free, with any donations going to the 2014 Group for the Memorial Avenue. Will anyone who has photos of someone from Beer who served in the First World War, and who would be happy for them to be copied and featured in the exhibition, please contact either Peter Anderson (01297 23507) or Richard Scott (01297 24157).

-- 15 -- Sunday 11 November is once again when we remember those from the village who fought and died in both World Wars. We will follow the usual format by assembling at the War Memorial 10.45am, followed by the impressive march up by the cubs and scouts. Two minutes silence to be observed at 11am followed by the laying of the wreaths and a Church Service in St Michael's for those who wish to attend. If wet, we will have to conduct all of the above inside the Church. Sometimes, people will say what is the point of Remembrance? For me, it is to recognize the bravery of those who fought, many of whom were conscripted when the last thing they and their families wanted was to go off and fight. I wonder what the reaction would be today if a conscription order went out. The Royal British Legion raised £46 million last year to support the medical and psychological treatment of our servicemen and women killed or injured doing their duty. Losing a limb or a life creates terrible emotional stress and hardship for the victim and their families and it seems very important to support the fund raising carried out by the Royal British Legion. So please, give generously to this noble cause wherever you see poppies on display. Thank you for your support. Peter Anderson, Poppy Appeal Organizer, Royal British Legion, Beer Branch. ROYAL BRITISH LEGION BEER BRANCH AGM This year our AGM will be held on Monday 19th November at 1700 in the Congregational Hall. We are pleased that Nicola Hodgskins, the Devon Welfare Officer, will be joining us to tell us about her work and the work of the Legion. Do come along and join us.

-- 17 -- -- 18 -- The Pain Is Not Who You Are ● You have suffered in your life. All human beings suffer. The cause of your suffering is not ‘out there’ in the world, it is in you. In your response to what happens. ● Can you be an observer of your thoughts? Can you stand aside from your thinking and watch how your mind responds? Can you detach? ● Suffering arises when you identify with your thinking. But all thoughts are fleeting. Thoughts are not you. You are the conscious awareness, the space of consciousness in which thoughts arise. ● Be that space. Detach from your thinking and be present in the moment. This moment that is always now. ● Take a deep breath. ● Do one thing at a time, and do it consciously. ● Events in your life will continue to cause you pain. Allow the pain. Observe it. The pain is not who you are. ● Live consciously in touch with your inner space. It is the essence of you. Live at peace with life. Live at peace with yourself.
