Further details are available at www.ageofnelson.org/ Presented by the Exeter Flotilla on the occasion of the Trafalgar Day Service held on the bicentenary of the battle. INTRODUCTION TO THE DEVON TRAFALGAR ROLL On the 19th October 1805 the combined fleet of France and Spain was observed to be sailing from Cadiz. News that the enemy fleet was at sea was relayed to the Commander in Chief of the British fleet, Vice Admiral Lord Nelson, and to intercept it his fleet sailed for the Straits of Gibraltar. On the eve of battle Nelson prayed: - May the great God, whom I worship, grant my country, and for the benefit of Europe in general a great and glorious victory; and may no misconduct in anyone tarnish it; and may humanity after victory be the predominant feature in the British Fleet. For myself, individually, I commit my life to him that made me, and may his blessings alight my endeavours for serving my Country faithfully. To him I resign myself and the just cause which is entrusted me to defend. Amen. Amen. Amen. When the fleets met off Cape Trafalgar on the morning of the 21st the British formed two columns and, in light westerly airs, set an easterly course to close. The van was led by Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory and the rear column by Vice Admiral Lord Collingwood’s flagship HMS Royal Sovereign. The combined fleet of 33 sail of the line, commanded by Admiral Villeneuve in Bucentaure, wore round and reached back to the north. Royal Sovereign was first in action and received fire before breaking through the middle of the enemy line astern of the seventeenth ship, Santa Ana. Shortly afterwards Victory also broke through, passing astern of the twelfth ship, Bucentaure. The leading eight ships in the enemy line were cut off from the action which soon left all three principle flagships without masts and rigging. Questions were invited in advance of the meeting and those received were sent to both invitees. Cllr Osman withdrew due to an urgent issue arising, while also expressing concern at the level of detail in the questions he had received, however was able to send written replies (Questions and Somerset Answers attached). Welcome and Introduction Heather Stallard welcomed everyone to the meeting, and apologised for the unavoidable absence of Cllr Osman. She expressed disappointment at this, as many rural issues for the BHPN relate to both Counties and occasionally policies appear to diverge.

INTRODUCTION & SITE DESCRIPTION 1.1 Mills Whipp Projects has been commissioned by GL Hearn to prepare a Desk Based Assessment of archaeology for the Westwood site on the eastern side of Junction 27 of the M5 (Figs.1, 2 & 17). 1.2 The site is centred on National Grid Reference ST 0510 1382 and is approximately 90 ha (222 acres) in area. It lies immediately to the east of the Sampford Peverell Junction 27 of the M5. Its northern side lies adjacent to Higher Houndaller Farmhouse while the southern end is defined by Andrew’s Plantation, the lane leading to Mountstephen Farm and Mountstephen Cottages (Fig.16).
