HOMO-SEXILE: GAY AND TRANSGENDER COMMUNITIES - SEXUAL AND NATIONAL IDENTITIES IN LATIN AMERICAN FICTION AND FILM by MIGUEL MOSS MARRERO BA, MA DISSERTATION Presented to the Faculty of The University of Texas at Dallas in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN HUMANITIES THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT DALLAS August 2018 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Latin American transgender women and gay men are part of my family. This dissertation is dedicated to them. It would have not been possible without their stories. I want to give my gratitude to my mother, who set an example by completing her doctoral degree with three exuberant boys and a full-time job in mental health. I also want to dedicate this to my father, who encouraged me to accomplish my goals and taught me that nothing is too great to achieve. I want to thank my siblings who have shown support throughout my doctoral degree. I also want to thank my husband, Michael Saginaw, for his patience while I spent many hours in solitude while writing my dissertation. Without all of their support, this chapter of my life would have been meaningless.

SAVE ME Directed by Robert Cary Story by Craig Chester and Alan Hines Screenplay by Robert Desiderio Starring Chad Allen, Robert Gant, Judith Light 96 minutes, color, 2007 First Run Features 630 Ninth Avenue, Suite 1213 New York, NY 10036 (212) 243-0600/Fax (212) 989-7649 www.firstrunfeatures.com 1 of 18 SYNOPSIS 1 Save Me is a love story about Mark, a sex and drug addicted young man who after an accidental overdose finds he’s been checked into a Christian retreat for ‘Ex-Gays’. Gayle, the director of the ministry run together with her husband Ted, believes she can help cure young men of their ‘gay affliction’ through spiritual guidance. At first, Mark resists, but soon takes the message to heart. As Mark’s fellowship with his fellow Ex-Gays grow stronger, however, he finds himself powerfully drawn to Scott, another young man battling family demons of his own. As their friendship begins to develop into romance, Mark and Scott are forced to confront the new attitudes they’ve begun to accept, and Gayle finds the values she holds as an absolute truth to be threatened. A complex and deeply sympathetic look into both sides of one of the most polarizing religious and sexual debates in America. SYNOPSIS 2 Though there is no sound scientific evidence that sexual orientation can be changed, the ex-gay movement has been at the polarizing center of religious and sexual debates in the U.S. since the 1970s. In Save Me , an exceptionally layered, intelligent and sensitive drama brought to life by director Robert Cary, Mark (Chad Allen) a self-destructive addict hooked to anonymous sex and narcotics finally hits bottom.

  • Education Report FY20 Welcome
Education Report FY20 Welcome 2020 has been an unprecedented year for us all. With the performing arts industry grinding to a halt, we see the importance of keeping music alive in our community, starting at the grass roots level – through education! We wish to celebrate PopsEd making a difference in the lives of close to 3,000 New York City students this past school year. Though we were not able to serve as many students through Kids in the Balcony this year due to COVID-19 and the cancellation of our March concert and Annual Birthday Gala in April, our PopsEd Residency portfolio expanded this year, with the addition of six new residencies. When COVID-19 struck the city and school sites closed, we adapted our programming to suit the needs of program partners requesti ng remote learning opportunities. Teaching Artists were granted access to Google Classrooms/Meets and were able to facilitate a variety of sessions, covering topics such as breathing technique, critical analysis and listening activities, and exploring rhythm with kitchen items like pots and pans. To round out our Virtual Programming, we wanted to give our Kids on Stage students a chance to shine this year. As they were not able to perform at Carnegie Hall as planned, Kids on Stage Director Brian Worsdale, Music Director and Conductor Steven Reineke, and Education and Operations Manager Analisa Bell, facilitated the Kids on Stage Virtual Snowman project. Students participated in Q&A sessions with Steven Reineke, members of Disney’s Frozen pit orchestra, and Kristen and Bobby Lopez (the multi-award-winning husband and wife song-writing team).

  • Bc Salsa: Identity,Musicianshipand Performance in Vancouver’Safro-Latinorchestras
BC SALSA: IDENTITY, MUSICIANSHIP AND PERFORMANCE IN VANCOUVER’S AFRO-LATIN ORCHESTRAS by MALCOLM Al KEN B.Mus., The University of British Columbia, 2004 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Music) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2009 © Malcolm Aiken, 2009 11 ABSTRACT For over twenty-five years, musicians, dancers and singers of Afro-Latin music have maintained an active presence in the culturally diverse music scene of Vancouver, BC. During this time, the music performed and created by this group of artists has undergone dynamic changes in sound and function, reflecting a new transcultural music identity. This music, commonly referred to as salsa, is being created, performed and transformed by musicians of all backgrounds and social classes. Local composers are incorporating a variety of musical influences into their music and assimilating elements of the city’s music cultures. Today, an eclectic mix of musicians in Vancouver are creating new forms of music rooted in the Afro-Latin music traditions, and are establishing a unique contemporary musical scene. At the forefront of salsa’s local history are the Afro-Latin dance bands prominent in the city’s dance community. Their impact on the musicians and local music culture has been paramount and pivotal to the exposure of salsa to a mainstream Canadian audience. One prominent factor in the continued growth of the music has been the influence of the many non—Latino musicians who have assimilated into the salsa community as performers. Their musical and cultural influences have helped push the music in new directions and maintained the music’s relevance within the wider arts community.

In the same year the Portuguese expedition of Pedro Cabral landed at the easternmost bulge of Brazil, and Cabral quickly claimed the land for Portugal. The Portuguese, already heavily involved in the profitable Atlantic slave trade, quickly established African slavery in Brazil. The influx of Africans laid the ground fro the development of the Capoeria; a unique form of martial art which combines elements of music, acrobatics, and ritual with combat. It is theorized that African slaves developed Capoeira to defend themselves from (or perhaps to revolt against) the Portuguese slave holders. This theory of Capoeira’s development holds that captive slaves would secretly practice the martial art moves to the rhythm of the Berimbau, a bow-percussion instrument that clearly has its origins in African music.

The Newspaper of The Diocese of Brooklyn | Since 1908 | Volume 113, No. 45 | January 30, 2021 | $1 ‘9 Days for Life’ Novena Held BIDEN’S ORDERS How his executive actions affect Catholics l PAGE 13 Ahead of 2021 Virtual March by Erin DeGregorio, Staff Writer PROSPECT HEIGHTS — The nationwide “9 Days for Life” Novena, sponsored by the United States Catholic Conference of Bishop’s Committee on Pro-Life Activ- ities, was celebrated in the Diocese of Brooklyn. This year, the Novena took place from Jan. 21 to 29, provid- ing parishioners with daily refl ections and opportuni- ties for prayers and actions to promote the respect of all human life. “Every year, Diocese of Brooklyn parishioners attend the March for Life in Washington, D.C. to pray for an end to the tragedy of abortion. This year, due to the pan- demic, the March for Life is virtual, so attendance was not possible,” said Father Joseph Gibino, vicar for Evan- gelization and Catechesis. “But, here in our Diocese, we can pray in communion for the protection of all human life, either at one of our Masses or through this year’s special Novena.” On Jan. 21, the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph held the opening Mass for Life with strict health and safety guide- lines put in place. Deacon John Cantirino from Immac- ulate Heart of Mary Parish in Windsor Terrace, who an- nually walks in the March for Life, attended the Mass to keep his tradition alive in a similar fashion. ALSO INSIDE He believes the “9 Days for Life” Novena highlights President Biden's previous meetings with Pope Francis l PAGE 9 Catholics’ commitment to proclaim the sanctity of life.
