Education Report FY20 Welcome 2020 has been an unprecedented year for us all. With the performing arts industry grinding to a halt, we see the importance of keeping music alive in our community, starting at the grass roots level – through education! We wish to celebrate PopsEd making a difference in the lives of close to 3,000 New York City students this past school year. Though we were not able to serve as many students through Kids in the Balcony this year due to COVID-19 and the cancellation of our March concert and Annual Birthday Gala in April, our PopsEd Residency portfolio expanded this year, with the addition of six new residencies. When COVID-19 struck the city and school sites closed, we adapted our programming to suit the needs of program partners requesti ng remote learning opportunities. Teaching Artists were granted access to Google Classrooms/Meets and were able to facilitate a variety of sessions, covering topics such as breathing technique, critical analysis and listening activities, and exploring rhythm with kitchen items like pots and pans. To round out our Virtual Programming, we wanted to give our Kids on Stage students a chance to shine this year. As they were not able to perform at Carnegie Hall as planned, Kids on Stage Director Brian Worsdale, Music Director and Conductor Steven Reineke, and Education and Operations Manager Analisa Bell, facilitated the Kids on Stage Virtual Snowman project. Students participated in Q&A sessions with Steven Reineke, members of Disney’s Frozen pit orchestra, and Kristen and Bobby Lopez (the multi-award-winning husband and wife song-writing team). They received instrumental tutorial videos recorded by TNYP orchestra musicians and were provided sheet music for “Do You Want To Build a Snowman?” from Disney’s Frozen to study and record. Their individual recordings were then fully produced and edited into a virtual orchestra performance alongside musicians from The New York Pops and members of Disney’s Frozen pit orchestra! The final product was shown at the Virtual Snowman Zoom Viewing Party attended by their families, music teachers, musicians from TNYP and Disney’s Frozen pit orchestra, Steven Reineke, Brian Worsdale, and staff of The New York Pops. We could not do what we do for the students of New York City without your valued support. Thank you! Anne M. This was a very unique chance for them to hear an orchestra in such an elegant, historic venue… ” - Eva Kostakis, Teacher, JHS 189 Queens Pre-concert visit activity PS 175X City Island, Bronx Residencies Our PopsEd Residency portfolio expanded this year, with the addition of six new residencies. Three residencies were part of the Paul Simon Music Fellows Program, through the Department of Education’s Fund for Public Schools. Three of our teaching artists were partnered with early career music teachers to act as mentors and help these new teachers create tailor made music programs in their schools – Beginner Jazz Band at M.S. 244 in the Bronx, Marching Band at Ebbets Field Middle School and Jazz for Orchestra at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School in Queens. In addition to our existing residency with All City High School Bands' Latin Jazz Ensemble (pictured), we expanded our partnership to include the All City Marching Band. We also began a partnership with The Academy of Talented Scholars, P.S. 682, in Brooklyn, providing instrumental specialists to complement the school’s growing band program, and completed a month-long residency with the Third Street Symphonic Band, providing Teaching Artists for specialized instrumental coaching in the lead up to their winter concert. In addition to our new residency partnerships, we increased our reach at M.S.167 in Manhattan. After the success of PopsEd Tuba Day at the school in 2018-19, we curated a Musical Mentors pilot program for the school’s expansive band program catering to almost 500 students. The program consisted of a series of masterclasses across various instruments led by teaching artists and musicians from The New York Pops. The plan is to grow the program to model our highly successful Musical Mentors program at I.S. 318 in Brooklyn. The ability to be nourished by such amazing people like yourselves is an honor and a blessing. The countless memories and opportunities will be cherished by me forever..." Kids on Stage parent, Crystal Bueno said: "We were all fighting tears during the “Virtual Snowman” performance because of everything that “Kids on Stage" has meant to Adam and our family....Thank you — from our whole family — for this opportunity and experience.” Sawa Akita (student), Helen Campo (TNYP), Adam Bueno (student) New instruments Thanks to East Hill Foundation, we had the great pleasure of purchasing new instruments for some of our Kids on Stage students this year, including a double bass for Ryan Hau (left) and cello for Andrew Cantor (above) from David Gage String Instruments in Manhattan. We first met Ryan three years ago when he came to audition for the Kids on Stage program as a shy 11-year-old. Since then he’s excelled during his time with us and has formed a great bond with Principal Bassist Jeff Carney. This year was Andrew's first year with us, and we were in awe of the magnificent tone he produces on his instrument for one so young!
