Abstract This monograph examines the musical modernist era in Mexico between 1945 and the 1970s. It aims to provide a new understanding of the eclecticism achieved by Mexican composers during this era, using three different focal points. First, I examine the cultural and musical context of this period of Mexican music history. I scrutinize the major events, personalities, and projects that precipitated Mexican composers’ move away from government-promoted musical nationalism during this period toward an embrace of international trends. I then provide a case study through which to better understand this era, examining the early life, education, and formative influences of Mexican composer Federico Ibarra (b.1946), focusing particularly on the 1960s and 1970s. -

At first, Mark resists, but soon takes the message to heart. As Mark’s fellowship with his fellow Ex-Gays grow stronger, however, he finds himself powerfully drawn to Scott, another young man battling family demons of his own. As their friendship begins to develop into romance, Mark and Scott are forced to confront the new attitudes they’ve begun to accept, and Gayle finds the values she holds as an absolute truth to be threatened. A complex and deeply sympathetic look into both sides of one of the most polarizing religious and sexual debates in America. SYNOPSIS 2 Though there is no sound scientific evidence that sexual orientation can be changed, the ex-gay movement has been at the polarizing center of religious and sexual debates in the U.S. since the 1970s. In Save Me , an exceptionally layered, intelligent and sensitive drama brought to life by director Robert Cary, Mark (Chad Allen) a self-destructive addict hooked to anonymous sex and narcotics finally hits bottom. -
Education Report FY20 Welcome
Education Report FY20 Welcome 2020 has been an unprecedented year for us all. With the performing arts industry grinding to a halt, we see the importance of keeping music alive in our community, starting at the grass roots level – through education! We wish to celebrate PopsEd making a difference in the lives of close to 3,000 New York City students this past school year. Though we were not able to serve as many students through Kids in the Balcony this year due to COVID-19 and the cancellation of our March concert and Annual Birthday Gala in April, our PopsEd Residency portfolio expanded this year, with the addition of six new residencies. When COVID-19 struck the city and school sites closed, we adapted our programming to suit the needs of program partners requesti ng remote learning opportunities. Teaching Artists were granted access to Google Classrooms/Meets and were able to facilitate a variety of sessions, covering topics such as breathing technique, critical analysis and listening activities, and exploring rhythm with kitchen items like pots and pans. To round out our Virtual Programming, we wanted to give our Kids on Stage students a chance to shine this year. As they were not able to perform at Carnegie Hall as planned, Kids on Stage Director Brian Worsdale, Music Director and Conductor Steven Reineke, and Education and Operations Manager Analisa Bell, facilitated the Kids on Stage Virtual Snowman project. Students participated in Q&A sessions with Steven Reineke, members of Disney’s Frozen pit orchestra, and Kristen and Bobby Lopez (the multi-award-winning husband and wife song-writing team). -

Accidents, chance, fate and the elusive quest to make sense out of tragedy underpin director Jennifer Baichwal’s (Manufactured Landscapes) captivating new work, an elegant cinematic meditation on the metaphysical effects of being struck by lightning. To explore these profound questions, Baichwal sought out riveting personal stories from around the world—from a former CIA assassin and a French storm chas- er, to writer Paul Auster and improvisational musician Fred Frith. The philosophical anchor of the film, Auster was caught in a terrifying and deadly storm as a teenager, and it has deeply affected both his life and art: “It opened up a whole realm of speculation that I’ve continued to live with ever since.” In his doctor brother’s laboratory, Frith experiments with his guitar to demonstrate the ubiquity of electricity in our bodies and the universe. Visually dazzling and aurally seductive, Act of God singularly captures the harsh beauty of the skies and the lives of those who have been forever touched by their fury. DIRECTOR’S NOTES I studied philosophy and theology before turning to documentary and, in some ways, the questions I was drawn to then are the ones I still grapple with now, although in a different context. Two of these, which specifically inform this film, are the relationship between meaning and randomness and the classical problem of evil. -
