Before celebrities and socialites bought entire islands or rented massive Airbnb homes, Hollywood stars, royals, artists, and fashion designers spent their holidays at classic, historic hotels. Elizabeth Taylor preferred to take her après-ski in the Gstaad Palace, while Audrey Hepburn could be seen flying down the slopes near Badrutt’s in St. Moritz. Emilio Pucci sat poolside at Il Pellicano in Porto Ercole, and at La Colombe d’Or in Saint-Paul de Vence, a dinner guest at the next table might have been Pablo Picasso or a young Jane Fonda . Though many decades may have passed, the hotels and resorts remain as enchanting as they once were.

Gstaad Palace Gstaad Palace, which celebrated its 100th birthday last year, once played host to the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Roger Moore, and Madonna . Surrounding the hotel, the town includes shops like Louis Vuitton and Cartier, and inside there are indoor and outdoor pools, five restaurants, and a spa with a hammam. Hotel Il Pellicano Situated on a cliff overlooking Argentario Bay in Porto Ercole, Tuscany, the Hotel Il Pellicano is one of the most stylish and exclusive resorts in the world. Photographer Slim Aarons famously captured the hotel’s panache in the ’70s and ’80s—royals, socialites, and celebrities lounging on the rocks or by the pool with colorful umbrellas overhead. La Colombe d’Or Originally opened in 1920 as a café and bar, La Colombe d’Or is now home to some impressive artwork, much of it given to the owners by the artists in gratitude for their stay. Built on the hill of Saint-Paul de Vence in the South of France, the hotel guest book holds such illustrious names as Miró, Chagall, and Picasso. The quaint, rustic hideaway has only 13 rooms and 12 suites, with a traditional French restaurant and a pool and courtyard punctuated by an Alexander Calder mobile.

Hotel Alfonso XIII Originally built in Seville for King Alfonso XIII of Spain, the hotel was and is now as grand and regal as one might imagine. Previous frequent visitors included Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot , and Grace Kelly, all of whom came to indulge in the spectacular antique decor of the hotel’s common areas, as well as the Royal Suite, which today contains two bathrooms, a living room, and an office. Belmond Hotel Caruso In Ravello on the Amalfi Coast in Italy, the Belmond Hotel Caruso has one of the most striking infinity pools in all of Europe.
