Popular medical books described diseases and how to cure them, and the press regularly addressed the topic of having a healthy body. Meanwhile, representations of the perfect body became an increasingly important problem for neoclassical art. This case study investigates how Dániel Berzsenyi (1776–1836), one of the important Hungarian poets of the early nineteenth century, thought about the human body. For him, the representation of the body was, on the one hand, an artistic problem which raised questions concerning manners of imitation and, on the other hand, an artistic problem which was associated with the display of human virtues and thus with ethical discourse. Berzsenyi gave an account of his illnesses, which can be traced back to hypochondria, in a private letter. His self-analysis has three layers. First, his private letter could be read as part of a sensible epistolary novel. I argue that Berzsenyi introduced himself as a sensible hero, who was ill because of his own uncontrollable emotions. Second, hypochondria has a medical context. Considering the continued influence, in Berzsenyi’s time, of the ancient doctrine of bodily fluids, I demonstrate that this disease may have become a mental illness associated with poets. The reason for this is that the emotions entertained by the sensible man led to the emergence of physical symptoms which were associated with the hardly definable concept of hypochondria.

Abstract The relationship between magyarization and Hungarian civil society during the reform era of Hungarian history (1790-1848) is the subject of this dissertation. This thesis examines the cultural and political activities of three liberal oppositional nobles: András Fáy (1786-1864), István Bezerédj (1796-1856) and Ödön Beöthy (1796-1854). These three men were chosen as the basis of this study because of their commitment to a two- pronged approach to politics: they advocated greater cultural magyarization in the multiethnic Hungarian Kingdom and campaigned to extend the protection of the Hungarian constitution to segments of the non-aristocratic portion of the Hungarian population.

Studia Slavica Hung. 52/1–2 (2007) 229–234 DOI: 10.1556/SSlav.52.2007.1-2.33 Sociolinguistics of translation KINGA KLAUDY ELTE Fordító- és Tolmácsképző Központ, Budapest, Múzeum krt. 4/F, H-1088 E-mail: [email protected] (Received: 1 September 2006; accepted: 16 October 2006) Abstract: The paper describes how sociolinguistics, revealing the relationship between language and society independently of translation, provides scientifically well-founded descriptions of the relationship between the source language and source language society, and the target language and the target language society, and might thus contribute to exploring the objective rules behind the translators’ decisions. Keywords: pragmatic adaptation, translation of dialects, translation of realia, untrans- latability, intercultural translation policy 1. The concept of pragmatic adaptation The history of thinking about translation has never failed to recognise the social importance of translation. In the history of translation in Hungary, especially in the 18th century (in the works of János Batsányi, Ferenc Kazinczy, György Bessenyei), thoughts on the social relevance of translation gained much more importance than the linguistic exploration of translation (on the Hungarian tradition see Radó in Baker 1998: 448–453). What is called in today’s modern terminology pragmatic adaptation (Neu- bert 1968), i. e. the adaptation of the translated work to the needs of the target language audience, has never been better accomplished than in the case of András Dugonics in 1807, who placed Voltaire’s Zadig into a Hungarian context under the title Cserei, egy honvári herceg, into 10th-century Hungary, the era of Taksony vezér (i. e. Taksony chief) (Dugonics 1807, 1975).

This paper will depict Hungarian attempts to introduce the Hungarian language in Croatian schools, based on an analysis of conclusions of the Croatian Diet, various reports and other documents of this period. Hungarians were partially successful in their attempt. In 1833, Hungarian became a compulsory school subject in Croatian schools, but Hungarians did not manage to introduce it as the language of instruction, which gave rise to disputes in the 1840s. In spite of all Hungarian efforts, the attempt to spread Hungarian through schools in Civil Croatia remained futile. Keywords: Hungarian language, Croatian schools, first half of the 19th century Arijana Kolak Bošnjak Attempts to Introduce the Hungarian Language in Croatian Schools in the First Half of the 19th Century Introduction The language issue marked two important periods of the Hungarian history, the Enlightenment (1772-1825) and the period of reforms (1830- 1848). In the former, the role of the national language gained importance as part of Enlightenment ideas, primarily the idea of an individual’s and a people’s progress based on education in the national language.

    „Egyedül Artistának Kívánok Tekintetni”

Theses of a University PhD Dissertation „egyedül Artistának kívánok tekintetni” – Ferenc Kazinczy and the Politeness – Máté Ferenc Bodrogi Supervisor: Dr. Attila Debreczeni University of Debrecen PhD School of Literary Arts Debrecen, 2010. 1 1. Aims of the Thesis The starting point of this dissertation is the recognition of the impossibility of reconstructing Ferenc Kazinczy’s authentic self-concept since he actually had a collection of them. The study of Kazinczy’s letters reveals the demonstration of a personality created and re-created by language successively, a passion of constant self-interpretation by language, an ideological transformation and continuous re-interpretation of the exhibited self. I wish to extend the scope of this statement: Kazinczy’s life can be interpreted as a continuum of „facade construction” acts, equally relevant in his youth and in his later years. Thus he becomes a freemason Orpheus, a Hercules who amends style, a decent landlord managing his finances, a caring and watchful father, a stoic political prisoner, or a „Holy Old Man” with his acquiscence in his later writings. But in this repertoire there is an especially strong version that persists over decades: the most remarkable of these „faces” is the gentle, sensitive, tender-minded and pliant Kazinczy, who is masculin, graceful, polite, well-educated, a man of fashion and a maecenas of arts at the same time. This recurrent cluster of motifs is easily found in his self-representations, self-dramatizations and in some of the peritexts of his works as well. This group of motifs is a mutual element in the experience of the creation and the interpretation of the presented Self.

Patterns, Ideologies, Networks of Memory, and the Kazinczy Commemoration

Levente T. Szabó Patterns, ideologies, networks of memory, and the Kazinczy commemoration The basics: Ferenc Kazinczy, the first modern Hungarian literary hero 1859 has recently been discovered in Hungarian literary history as a premier in matters of literary events: the first occasion with most en‐ thusiasts of literature, forms of literary communities and communi‐ cative strategies that had never been seen before.1 The large‐scale celebration of the hundredth of birthday of Ferenc Kazinczy was the first literary event which seemed to magnetize tens of thousands of people, and placed literature in the forefront of public life. There is no complete inventory of the events, but the series of 120–150 com‐ memorations opened in Pest on the 27th of October, and lasted till the end of January of the following year. The central figure of these unprecedented events was born in 1759 into a noble family, he followed the typical life of a late 18th‐ century literate, combining several political and administrative duties with a strong literary interest. Appointed to the supervisor of the schools of several Hungarian administrative regions, he began an intensive literary networking in the second half of the 1780s. These literary connections led to the founding of two major Hungarian pioneering periodicals, the Magyar Museum and the Orpheus in the same period. Fallen out of favour with the imperial administration, he concentrated to his literary projects, beginning a prolific life of wirting, translation, and literary networking characteristic to the republic of letters of the time. Under the inspiration of the French Jacobins, a group of Hungarian noblemen and literate founded a complex network to propagate their views.
