The present volume was first published in Budapest, in 1992, by the Ráday Collection (Ráday Gy űjtemény). This editio princeps was brought out at the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the death of Gedeon Ráday, one of the founders of the library. We publish electronically this volume with the permission of the Ráday Collection. He seems to constantly be tempting the reader with a dangerous thought experiment. The dissertation will look at the idea in several ways to elucidate the depth and complexity of the idea. First, it will be looked at through its evolution, as it began as an idea early in Nietzsche’s career and reached its full complexity at the end of his career with the planned publication of his Revaluation of All Values, just before the onset of his madness. Several questions will be explored: What is the nature of the revaluator who is supposed to be instrumental in the process of revaluation? What will the values after the revaluation be like (a rebirth of ancient values or creation of entirely new values)? What will be the scope of the revaluation? And what is the relation of other major ideas of Nietzsche’s (will to power, eternal return, overman, and amor fati) to the revaluation? Different answers to these questions will be explored.

    Hungarian Historical Review 10, no. 2 (2021): 189–210 Hypochondria as a Poetic Disease: Medicine and Ethics in the Case of an Early Nineteenth-Century Hungarian Poet Gábor Vaderna Eötvös Loránd University / Research Centre for the Humanities [email protected] Medical knowledge reached a wider range of social strata in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Popular medical books described diseases and how to cure them, and the press regularly addressed the topic of having a healthy body. Meanwhile, representations of the perfect body became an increasingly important problem for neoclassical art. This case study investigates how Dániel Berzsenyi (1776–1836), one of the important Hungarian poets of the early nineteenth century, thought about the human body. For him, the representation of the body was, on the one hand, an artistic problem which raised questions concerning manners of imitation and, on the other hand, an artistic problem which was associated with the display of human virtues and thus with ethical discourse. Berzsenyi gave an account of his illnesses, which can be traced back to hypochondria, in a private letter. His self-analysis has three layers. First, his private letter could be read as part of a sensible epistolary novel. I argue that Berzsenyi introduced himself as a sensible hero, who was ill because of his own uncontrollable emotions. Second, hypochondria has a medical context. Considering the continued influence, in Berzsenyi’s time, of the ancient doctrine of bodily fluids, I demonstrate that this disease may have become a mental illness associated with poets. The reason for this is that the emotions entertained by the sensible man led to the emergence of physical symptoms which were associated with the hardly definable concept of hypochondria.

Abstract The relationship between magyarization and Hungarian civil society during the reform era of Hungarian history (1790-1848) is the subject of this dissertation. This thesis examines the cultural and political activities of three liberal oppositional nobles: András Fáy (1786-1864), István Bezerédj (1796-1856) and Ödön Beöthy (1796-1854). These three men were chosen as the basis of this study because of their commitment to a two- pronged approach to politics: they advocated greater cultural magyarization in the multiethnic Hungarian Kingdom and campaigned to extend the protection of the Hungarian constitution to segments of the non-aristocratic portion of the Hungarian population.

Keywords: pragmatic adaptation, translation of dialects, translation of realia, untrans- latability, intercultural translation policy 1. The concept of pragmatic adaptation The history of thinking about translation has never failed to recognise the social importance of translation. In the history of translation in Hungary, especially in the 18th century (in the works of János Batsányi, Ferenc Kazinczy, György Bessenyei), thoughts on the social relevance of translation gained much more importance than the linguistic exploration of translation (on the Hungarian tradition see Radó in Baker 1998: 448–453). What is called in today’s modern terminology pragmatic adaptation (Neu- bert 1968), i. e. the adaptation of the translated work to the needs of the target language audience, has never been better accomplished than in the case of András Dugonics in 1807, who placed Voltaire’s Zadig into a Hungarian context under the title Cserei, egy honvári herceg, into 10th-century Hungary, the era of Taksony vezér (i. e. Taksony chief) (Dugonics 1807, 1975).

    THE DEATH OF MARX: A MEDIA EVENT EVENT The 'new philosophers '. have enjoyed a recent intense vogue in France, 1 and have even provoked interest in the English speaking press - I have read articles on them in The Sunday Times, The Observer,observer, Encounter and Time magazine. on examination, they appear to be saying very little, so it is interesting to ask what their value is for the foreign press. It will be seen that I too treat them in a 'journalistic' rather than a serious academic fashion, and that this is, in fact, unavoidable. Nevertheless, whilst of little intrinsic interest, the new philosophers are illustrative ofof·two two problems, both of which are of some import. The first is that in French political and culturalculturaJ thought all problems and debates exist within a framework marked by two reference points - the' legislative elections in March 1978, and May 1968. These points are !'\ptApt symmetrical; however, they do mark the beginning and the end of the present •'epoch'.epoch'. The new philosophers are only possible v,i thin this framewor:j.{. The second is of a different order, and concerns the relations of intEll­ini;Ell­ lectuals to journalism, and the changes that these relations have bee~ undergoing. I shall return to these problems at the end, but first $hf.!,ll give an outline description of the phenomenon. * * * * The new philosophy oonsists primarily of publici,ty. COMMUNICATING THE APPROVAL OF A STANDARD AMENDMENT ‘Duna/Dunai’ Reference number PDO-HU-A1345-AM02 Date of communication: 9.2.2020 DESCRIPTION OF AND REASONS FOR THE APPROVED AMENDMENT 1. Addition of the municipalities of Kömpöc, Petőfiszállás, Pálmonostora, Újszilvás and Bácsszentgyörgy to the demarcated area (a) Product specification headings affected: IV. Demarcated area (b) Single document heading affected: Demarcated geographical area (c) Reasons: — The Wine Community Council of the Kunság Region (Kunsági Borvidék Hegyközségi Tanácsa) amended the product specification for the ‘Kunság/Kunsági’ PDO. The areas of the municipalities of Kömpöc, Petőfiszállás, Pálmonostora and Újszilvás classified as Class I and II according to the vineyard cadastre of wine-producing regions were added to the demarcated area. The change affects the demarcated area in the product specification for the ‘Duna/Dunai’ PDO and has been included in this application. The characteristics of the areas included in the vineyard cadastre correspond to the demarcated area of the ‘Duna/Dunai’ PDO. Vine-growing is one of the traditional economic activities of local inhabitants. The classification of the wine region and the possibility to produce the ‘Duna/Dunai’ PDO generates significant employment and income in these municipalities and contributes greatly towards the local tourism industry.
